The data was collected from the four divisions in the district from a sample of 200 pupils and 10 head teachers. The study used descriptive survey. It also used four research questions to answer the objectives. The first research question sought to get information on impact of lunch programme. The second one established enrolment rates while the third research question established retention rates and the fourth one helped to gather data on completion rate and the last one on the role of education stake holders on enrolment retention, completion of pupils in Primary Schools. The data analysis was done by use of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) programme. The results were generated and presented in form of percentages, frequencies and means.

Book excerpt: There is very limited experimental evidence of the impact of large-scale, government-led school meals programs on child educational achievements in Sub-Saharan Africa. We address this gap by reporting treatment effects from a nationwide randomized trial of the Government of Ghana’s school feeding program (GSFP) on children’s math and literacy, cognition (problem-solving ability and working memory), and composite scores of overall attainments. Based on the government’s plans to re-target and scale up the GSFP, food insecure schools and related communities across the country were randomly assigned to school feeding. After two years of implementation, program availability led to moderate increases in test scores for the average pupil in school catchment areas, ranging between 0.12 and 0.16 standard deviations. Analysis focusing on per-protocol population subgroups unveiled substantial heterogeneity: school feeding led to remarkable learning and cognitive gains for girls, poorest children, and children from the northern regions. Program effects were at least twice as large as for the average child. Increases in enrolment, grade attainment, and shifts in time use toward schooling time constituted potential mechanisms for impact. We conclude the program combined social protection with equitable human capital accumulation, thus contributing to the imperative of “learning for all” set in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Book excerpt: This paper examined the impact of the UNICEF supported school feeding programm on the academic performance of pupils in the Federal Capital. The survey research design was adopted in this study. A sample of 385 pupils; from school feeding schools, 216 from non-school feeding schools and 30 teachers from school feeding schools were utilized for the study. One research question and one hypothesis guided the study. A self-structured 13-item questionnaire was administered to gather data for the study. The Mean Standard Deviation was used to analyze the research question while t-test was utilized to test the hypothesis at.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that: teachers agree that the SFP had a positive impact on the performance of pupils in the area of the attention span of pupils, the stability of pupils in class and that pupils were consistent in their academic performance. The hypothesis tested revealed a significant difference between the performance of pupils under the school feeding program and the pupils without a school feeding program. This paper recommends among others that the federal government of Nigeria should scale up the implementation of the SFP to cover all states of the federation so as to benefit more school children in their academic performance.

Book excerpt: The importance of children’s nutritional status for subsequent human capital formation, the limited evidence of the effectiveness of social protection interventions on child nutrition, and the absence of knowledge on the intra-household impacts of cash and food transfers or how they are shaped by complementary programming motivate this paper. We implemented two, linked randomized control trials in rural Bangladesh, with treatment arms including cash transfers, a food ration, or a mixed food and cash transfer, as well as treatments where cash and nutrition behavior change communication (BCC) or where food and nutrition BCC were provided. Only cash plus nutrition BCC had a significant impact on nutritional status, but its effect on height-forage z scores (HAZ) was large, 0.25SD. We explore the mechanisms underlying this impact. Improved diets – including increased intake of animal source foods – along with reductions in illness in the cash plus BCC treatment arm are consistent with the improvement we observe in children’s HAZ.

Primary education is receiving much attention from governments of all countries and NGOs in recent times. However, poverty and hunger serves as barriers to achieving the Education for All (EFA) policy in Rwanda. To actualize the EFA in Rwanda, there was the introduction of some educational intervention programmes such as the capitation grant and the school feeding. School feeding programmes are safety net programmes as well as educational interventions ensuring that children with poor parents are given at least a meal a day at school. In Home grown school feeding program intervention (Rutsiro, Karongi, Nyaruguru and Nyamagabe districts), students get porridge and food respectively. Therefore, this thesis adopted the qualitative research method to investigate how Home grown school feeding program contributes to literacy improvement in Rutsiro district, Rwanda. As a result, approximately one-third of our research sample is reading at or above the WCPM range. Besides this, there are differences in boys' and girls' performance at certain ranges of WCPM, with a quarter of the male sample reading no words at all compared to 11.8 percent of females. Girls also outperform boys at the 16-30 WCPM range, but this trend reverses at the highest WCPM range, with nearly a quarter of boys reading 41-56 WCPM but just 13.6 percent of girls. The findings show that students who could read aloud have much better comprehension ratings: 92.6 percent meet or exceed standard compared to 64.8 percent of those with lower oral fluency. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate if the school feeding program has significant impact on students' school performance specifically on students' achievement Test score and students' class attendance rates among primary school children in Debre Libanos Woreda. A mixed method research design specifically sequential explanatory approaches was employed and a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collected. The data sources for the research were both primary and secondary. The primary data were collected from school administration of 423 students (195 from treatment and 228 from Controlled groups) using structured questionnaire. Content analyses, Key Informant Interviews and Observation were the methods employed to collect both primary and secondary data. The analysis employed both descriptive and inferential statistics. The independent sample t-test statistics revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the treatment and control group on attendance rate (t= p 0.10) using independent sample t-test.
