Book excerpt: This work examined variations in preschool education and the subsequent impact on first grade reading achievement in a sample of 64 children. The study was divided into three parts. The first part involved kindergarten and first grade teachers participating in a focus group interview where they were asked to share their views on issues relating to school readiness and the important early literacy skills children acquire during the preschool years. The second part of the study involved parents of second grade children reflecting on their child's early literacy preschool experiences. A survey was used to determine the child's preschool setting and the self-reported literacy practices used by parents with regards to their child's preschool experiences. The third part of the study examined DIBELS archival data that served as an intensive focus on measures of phonemic awareness and projected reading achievement. Results demonstrated that children who attended non-parental home-based preschool were slightly lower-performing kindergarteners in the area of early literacy. Findings generally confirm that children who attend a public pre-kindergarten setting enter kindergarten with somewhat higher levels of academic skills than children from other preschool settings.

Book excerpt: This study utilized the 2013 language arts data from the Mississippi Curriculum Test II to examine the impact Pre-k has on the reading achievement of low socio-economic African American students. This study was guided by one research question and employed a causal-comparative research design. The research question sought to determine the difference in MCT2 language arts scores of third grade students who participated in a school district’s Pre-k program and those who did not attend the district’s Pre-k program. The results indicated that there was a significant difference in the language arts scores of students who attended Pre-k and those that did not. The study concludes with implications for practicing educators and recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: The importance of parent involvement in children's early literacy development has been identified repeatedly as a critical factor contributing to children's school success. Research indicated that when parents engage with their children in learning activities at home, provide basic needs, and communicate with the school, their involvement can mitigate the negative impacts of poverty and prevent students from dropping out. This mixed methods study examined the impact of teacher-parent partnerships and parental involvement on children's early literacy readiness. The study specifically analyzed the relationship between parent involvement in early literacy development and their children's academic achievement in reading. The study included a series of workshops following the Latino Family Literacy Project curriculum, where eight parents of incoming kindergarteners were invited to join an eight-week workshop to teach them about the importance of early childhood literacy, English oral language development, as well as specific literacy skills to work on at home. Student data were later compared between those students with parents in the workshop and those who did not have parents involved to determine if there was significant growth in pre-literacy readiness of those with direct parent involvement compared to those that did not. Results indicated that students with parents in the Latino Family Literacy Project had a higher growth rate in their pre-literacy readiness scores in the first trimester, compared to students in a control group who did not have parents involved.

Book excerpt: Student early literacy readiness is predictive of later academic success and pre-k programs are a proven intervention to develop early literacy; however, the cost of pre-k programs differs greatly. These differences in cost are related to the opportunities and services included within each program. This study examined four pre-k programs offered within a large school system in Virginia to determine if there were differences in student's early literacy growth by program attended and evaluated the ratio of cost to achievement of each pre-k program to determine their cost-effectiveness. To do this, two one-way analyses of variances (ANOVAs) were conducted to test if the pre-k program attended had an effect on students' early literacy performance. Student performance was measured using data from the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 PALS-Pre-K administrations. ANOVAs were conducted using mean gain scores and developmental level attainment measures. The cost of each program was then determined using an ingredients method. Financial data was collected through a review of financial documents and interviews. Finally, three Cost-Effectiveness Ratios were calculated using mean gain scores, developmental range attainment, and a standardized mean gain score. Results found no significant differences between group means [F(3, 509) = .636, p = .592, h2= .004 and F(3, 510) = .329, p = .804, h2 = .002]. A comparison of mean gain scores revealed a 4.60-point difference across the programs, suggesting that early literacy performance between programs does not differ greatly within the population studied. In the overall mean developmental range attainment analysis, a difference of only .08 was found between programs, again demonstrating that there was not much variance between programs. Although this study did not find significant differences in students' early literacy performance between pre-k programs, this study did reveal significant differences in the overall costs of pre-k programs studied. CEA results found the Title I Pre-K program to be the most cost-effective, lowest cost with highest gains. These findings do not consider longer-term benefits or benefits related to potential effects on other school readiness factors.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of preschool education on students' kindergarten readiness and subsequent kindergarten performance in a low socioeconomic primary school. There are several factors that influence a child's readiness for school, including the children's natural talents and abilities, their families, their early environments, their schools, and their communities. -- The setting for this research was a primary school located within a small, urban school district in the piedmont area of North Carolina. For the purpose of this study, all kindergarten students were placed into three subgroups: kindergarten students who attended the prekindergarten program at the primary school, kindergarten students who attended an outside prekindergarten program in the surrounding community, and kindergarten students who have no record of prekindergarten attendance. -- The study's methodology included assessing all kindergarten students prior to the start of the school year using the fourth edition of the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL-4) kindergarten readiness screening assessment, and then comparing these scores to a) whether or not the student attended a prekindergarten program prior to starting school; and b) student achievement data recorded at three benchmark checkpoints (3, 5, and 7 months) throughout the kindergarten school year. Data on teacher perceptions of the effect of preschool on kindergarten readiness and student achievement were also collected and analyzed. -- When looking at kindergarten readiness, results suggest that children who attended a prekindergarten program prior to starting school scored significantly higher on the DIAL-4 readiness screening assessment than their peers who did not attend prekindergarten. In further analyzing the data, students who attended a prekindergarten program in the surrounding community scored significantly higher on the DIAL-4 readiness screening assessment than students who either attended the district prekindergarten program or did not attend prekindergarten. -- When looking at subsequent kindergarten performance, students who were originally identified as being ready for school did not, after 7 months of classroom instruction, score significantly higher in literacy, math or social development than their peers who were originally identified as being delayed. Additionally, students who attended a prekindergarten program prior to starting school did score significantly higher in math proficiency than their peers who did not attend prekindergarten, but there were no significant differences between the two groups for either literacy or social development.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if the intervention of attending public school pre-kindergarten reflected an impact on student achievement as measured by third grade Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) considering gender, English language learner status, socio-economic status, and the language of the test. To determine this impact, the performance of third grade students who attended prekindergarten in 10 selected elementary schools in San Antonio was compared to students in these same schools who did not attend pre-kindergarten. Quantitative techniques and analyses were used to illustrate data collected from the research sample. A t-test for independent means was used for Research Questions #1 and #2. An Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) procedure was also used to analyze the data as a function of gender, English language learner status, socio-economic status, and the language of the test in Research Question #3. Findings in the study included the following: 1. There was statistical significant difference on third grade TAKS reading scores among the students who attended pre-kindergarten. 2. There was statistical significant difference on third grade TAKS math scores among the students who attended pre-kindergarten. 3. There was no statistical significant difference on third grade TAKS reading or math among the students who attended or did not attend pre-kindergarten based on gender, socio-economic, English language learner status, and the language of the test.

Book excerpt: This study examined the reading achievement of kindergarteners that participated in a pre-kindergarten program and of those who had not participated in a Pre-K program as measured by the DIBELS kindergarten subtests given through the 2008-09 school year. For this particular study, only two components of the DIBELS test were administered and analyzed: Phonemic Segmentation Fluency (PSF) and Nonsense Word Fluency (PSF). DIBELS data was collected from a rural school district in southeastern Alabama, from 2 groups, Pre-K and Non Pre-K. Based on the results of this study, students show some benefit from school-based Pre-K programs in comparison to those students who do not attend and participate in school-based Pre-K programs.
