Book The Impact of Privatization and Competition in the Telecommunications Sector Around the World

Download or read book The Impact of Privatization and Competition in the Telecommunications Sector Around the World written by Wei Li and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a comprehensive country-level panel data set covering the period from 1981 to 1998, we examine the impact of privatization and competition in the telecommunications sector around the world. Privatization contributed substantially to labor shedding, output growth, network expansion, and improvements in labor productivity as well as total factor productivity. But how countries privatized is important. On the one hand, share-issue privatization facilitated the development of the mobile market segment. Granting a newly privatized operator a period of exclusive market access, on the other hand, reduced the gains from privatization (owing to the output-restricting tendency associated with market power) but did not entirely negate them. The presence of competitive pressure in the market was associated with more employment, higher output, faster network expansion, and higher labor and total factor productivity. We find evidence of complementarity between privatization and competition in that competition increased the gains from privatization and vice versa. Our estimates show that half of the output growth between 1990 and 1998 was attributable to privatization and competition, after controlling for input growth. Competition appeared to have a larger impact on labor and total factor productivity than did privatization.

Book The Privatisation of European Telecommunications

Download or read book The Privatisation of European Telecommunications written by Johan From and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international volume presents a comprehensive, comparative study of the transformation of the European telecommunications industry from 1990 to the present. The book focuses on the old incumbent operators and their dramatic change from state agencies to listed companies. It analyzes the liberalization process, as well as the corporatization and privatization of these companies. The contributors assess the conditions for the transformations taking place; the driving forces for change; the effects to management, the efforts of the EU during these processes, and ultimately, the role of the private owner. Political science publications have all but excluded analysis of the newly privatized companies; their contribution to the liberalization process both before and after privatization; and the interplay between the national political and company levels. The book redresses this shortcoming, and also features a double empirical focus in that the main national incumbents in Europe are analyzed and compared to Telenor, the Norwegian former incumbent.

Book The Efficacy of Privatization Policies in the Chilean and Mexican Telecommunications Industries

Download or read book The Efficacy of Privatization Policies in the Chilean and Mexican Telecommunications Industries written by Lana Jane Ellis and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privatization of the Mexican and Chilean telecommunications industries can provide guidelines for industry restructuring. Specifically, privatization of Compañía de Telecommunicaciones de Chile and Telefonos de Mexico provides two case studies to examine and analyze in assessing the role of privatization with respect to communication and information technologies and services in promoting economic development within lesser-developed countries. A thorough examination of these two approaches will provide a conceptual framework for evaluating the full range of benefits and costs associated with implementation of specific policies contributing to sound telecommunications decisions. This dissertation presents an analytical comparison of privatization of the Chilean and Mexican telecommunications industries, beginning with an overview of the telecommunications industry in developing nations. A discussion of the lessons learned from privatization of telecommunications in other developing nations as well as progress to date will follow. A review of the background of telecommunications privatization and lessons from more-developed nations completes the historical background necessary to frame the remaining topics. An examination of recent developments shows how the pressure for reform is mounting, notably because of technological advancements and the increasingly competitive telecommunications global marketplace. The primary focus of the paper is on identifying policies and practices that will maximize the gains from divestiture. Telefonos de Mexico and Compañía de Telecommunicaciones de Chile are examined in a comparative analysis of the privatization processes and results in Mexico and Chile. An examination of research results includes a discussion of socioeconomic issues and their implications followed by a discussion of policy issues and their implications. The paper ends with a discussion of research limitations and suggestions for further research.

Book Privatization Competition and Best Practices for Telecom Sector Reform

Download or read book Privatization Competition and Best Practices for Telecom Sector Reform written by Raul L. Katz and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) generate a wide range of social and economic externalities. Therefore, if ICT are not deployed and adopted within short periods of time, countries face significant social and economic opportunity costs. This paper provides empirical evidence in support of the importance of telecommunications sector reform to accelerate broadband deployment speed and adoption in the ICT sector to deliver social and economic impact. The theory of change put forward in this study establishes that privatization of incumbent telecommunications operators supports the introduction of competition and improved quality of regulations, which together condition the speed of technology migration, the amount of telecommunications capital spending and broadband penetration. In turn, all these three factors maximize economic impact and, ultimately, the development of the digital economy.

Book Towards Competition in Network Industries

Download or read book Towards Competition in Network Industries written by Paul J.J. Welfens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition in network industries faces particular problems which are analyzed from both a theoretical and policy perspective. Issues of vertical integration, deregulation and privatization are covered. While competition and privatization are rapidly unfolding in telecommunications in Western and Eastern Europe, energy and railway transportation represent sectors of more gradual liberalization. The different market characteristics of telecommunications, energy and transportation raise consistency problems in the fields of deregulation, investment strategies and internationalization. While transformation policies create opportunities for liberalization in Eastern Europe and Russia the latter shows critical problems in ending monopoly and state ownership. Network industries could be subject to competition and promise major investment opportunities plus consumer benefits.

Book Reforming Infrastructure

Download or read book Reforming Infrastructure written by Ioannis Nicolaos Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity, natural gas, telecommunications, railways, and water supply, are often vertically and horizontally integrated state monopolies. This results in weak services, especially in developing and transition economies, and for poor people. Common problems include low productivity, high costs, bad quality, insufficient revenue, and investment shortfalls. Many countries over the past two decades have restructured, privatized and regulated their infrastructure. This report identifies the challenges involved in this massive policy redirection. It also assesses the outcomes of these changes, as well as their distributional consequences for poor households and other disadvantaged groups. It recommends directions for future reforms and research to improve infrastructure performance, identifying pricing policies that strike a balance between economic efficiency and social equity, suggesting rules governing access to bottleneck infrastructure facilities, and proposing ways to increase poor people's access to these crucial services.

Book Telecommunications Sector Reforms in Senegal

Download or read book Telecommunications Sector Reforms in Senegal written by Jean-Paul Azam and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes Senegal's experience with telecommunications liberalization and privatization. Senegal privatized its incumbent operator in 1997, and granted the newly privatized firm seven years of fixed-line exclusivity while introducing "managed competition" in the cellular market and free competition in value-added services (VAS). By May 2001, two cellular operators, a number of VAS providers, and thousands of retailers operating telecenters had entered the market. Reform has thus significantly changed the landscape of Senegal's telecommunications sector and has brought with it tremendous improvement in sector performance. Between 1997 and 2001, fixed-line telephone penetration grew from 1.32 to 2.45 per hundred people, while mobile penetration skyrocketed from 0.08 to 4.04. But it is still too early to assess the validity of granting fixed-line exclusivity to the incumbent operator. While penetration increased, the operator did not meet objectives regarding rural telephony. Moreover, fixed-line penetration increased in areas where the operator faced competition from a mobile provider. This paper--a product of Regulation and Competition Policy, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to promote telecommunications competition, liberalization, and privatization in Africa.
