Book Personality and Work

Download or read book Personality and Work written by Murray Barrick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-02-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of personality has received increasing attention from industrial/organizational psychologists in both research and practice settings over the past decade. But while there is an overabundance of information related to the narrow area of personality testing and employee selection, there has been no definitive source offering a broader perspective on the overall topic of personality in the workplace. Personality and Work at last provides an in-depth examination of the role of personality in work behavior. An array of expert authors discusses the connection of personality to a wide range of outcomes beyond performance, including counterproductive behaviors, contextual performance, retaliatory behaviors, retention, learning, knowledge creation, and the process of sharing that knowledge. Throughout the book, the authors present theoretical perspectives, introduce new models and frameworks, and integrate and synthesize prior studies in ways that will stimulate future research and practice. Contributors to this volume include: Murray R. Barrick, Michael J. Cullen, David V. Day, Ed Diener, J. Kevin Ford, Lewis R. Goldberg, Leaetta Hough, Jeff W. Johnson, Martin J. Book The Impact of Personality on Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Impact of Personality on Job Satisfaction written by Brad Ward and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reports the results of 106 surveyed employees from a regional bank in the southeastern US. The purpose of this study is to understand how Big Five personality traits -- conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness to experience, and extraversion -- impact job satisfaction. Additionally, this paper investigates which job satisfaction facets, recognition, the work itself, achievement, growth, responsibility, policy, supervision, relationships, working conditions, salary and benefits, relate to job satisfaction. The Big Five inventory questionnaire and the Universal Dual-Factor Survey, based on Herzberg's Two-Factor theory of motivators and hygiene factors, were used to capture participant responses. The work itself and recognition were the strongest predictors of job satisfaction. Conscientiousness was related to, but was not a predictor of, job satisfaction. The study concludes with theoretical and practical implications.

Book excerpt: In light of the increasing global war for talents, this study redefines the concept of person-environment fit by analyzing the impact of personality and organizational context on job satisfaction. Specifically, it is examined whether certain organizational context variables have a moderating effect on the personality-job satisfaction relationship, implying that certain personality types are more suited for certain organizational context settings. Five statistically significant interaction effects were found with regards to the personality dimensions Automatic Information Processing, Need for Stimulation and Individuality and the organizational context variables organizational size, job complexity and Inter-team Interaction. Moreover, an integrated model of organizational context is developed encompassing 20 variables clustered along four dimensions. The model can be used by firms to put the findings of this study into practice and represents a basis for future research in the domain of organizational context.

Book excerpt: Employee selection has long stood at the practical forefront of industrial/organizational psychology. Today's social, business, and economic climates require ongoing adaptations by those who select organizations' personnel, and research on the topic helps gauge the impact of these adaptations and their implications for human performance and potential. The Oxford Handbook of Personnel Assessment and Selection codifies the wealth of new research surrounding employee selection (web-based assessments, social networking, globalization of organizations), situating them alongside more traditional practices to establish the best and most relevant research for both professionals and academics. Comprising chapters from authors in both the private sector and academia, this volume is organized into seven parts: (1) historical and social context of the field of assessment and selection; (2) research strategies; (3) individual difference constructs that underlie effective performance; (4) measures of predictor constructs; (5) employee performance and outcome assessment; (6) societal and organizational constraints on selection practice; and (7) implementation and sustainability of selection systems. While providing a comprehensive review of current research and practice, the purpose of this handbook is to provide an up-to-date profile of each of the areas addressed and highlight current questions that deserve additional attention from researchers and practitioners. This book of original chapters is designed to fulfill a need for a contemporary treatment of human personality in work organizations. Bringing together top scholars in the field, this book provides a comprehensive study of the role of personality in organizational life. Utilizing a personality perspective, scholars review the role of personality in groups, job satisfaction, leadership, stress, motivation, organizational climate and culture, and vocational interests. In addition, the book looks at more classical topics in personality at work, including the measurement of personality, personality-performance linkages, faking, and person-organization fit. Complete in both conceptual material and reviews of the literature across the variety of domains in which personality plays a role at work, this handbook borrows the idea that personality plays out in many ways in organizations and not just a correlate of task performance. The editors believe that this book supports this belief--that personality in its many conceptualizations is a useful lens through which to shed understanding on the broadest array of contemporary topics in industrial/organizational psychology and organizational behavior. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is very easy for organizations to ignore or overlook the impact of social and commercial change-of increased pressure to deliver profit (above all else) and of transformation in the ways in which we are now working-on the mental health and, consequently, the performance of their employees. And yet there is plenty of evidence that in many workplaces, performance is down, stress is up and professional employees are struggling to balance their home and work lives. This collection, while looking at individuals, places the spotlight on organizational initiatives to support the development of attitudes, values, character and behaviors in employees. The aim of these initiatives is to increase our resilience to those experiences and events which impact on performance. There is a particular focus on managerial and professional jobs where employee discretion and commitment are critical. The Fulfilling Workplace extends the themes developed in early titles in the Psychological and Behavioral Aspects of Risk Series deeper into organizations; to explore the organization's role in coming to grips both with human frailties and toxic workplaces-both destructive to individual and organizational health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drawing from recent developments regarding the contextual nature of personality (e.g., Wood & Roberts, 2006), we conducted two studies (one cross-sectional and one longitudinal over one year) to examine the validity of work personality in predicting job satisfaction and its mediation of the effect of global personality on job satisfaction. Study 1 showed that: a) individuals vary systematically in their personality between roles: they were significantly more conscientious and open to experience, and less extraverted at work compared to at home; b) work personality was a better predictor of job satisfaction than both global personality and home personality; and c) work personality demonstrated incremental validity above and beyond the other two personality measures. Study 2 further showed that each of the work personality dimensions fully mediated the association between its corresponding global personality trait and job satisfaction. Evidence for the discriminant validity of the findings is also presented "--Authors' abstract.
