Book excerpt: While the phrase “learning communities” has various definitions, at the heart of all programs is the goal of enhancing the student learning experience in the community of others. This volume provides valuable information about learning communities--from start to finish--including: • historical and theoretical foundations that guide these programs, • structures of learning communities that provide varied opportunities for student participation, with a focus on specific student populations who may benefit from learning community experiences, and • elements of staffing and assessment, as well as an annotated bibliography of recent learning community literature. The authors consider critical elements of learning community programs and offer recommendations and options for faculty and staff who work with, or hope to work with, this particular curricular and cocurricular learning structure. This the 149th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly series. An indispensable resource for vice presidents of student affairs, deans of students, student counselors, and other student services professionals, New Directions for Student Services offers guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.

Book The Impact of Participation in a Curricular Learning Community on Academic Success Academic and Social Integration Institutional Commitment and Persistence of First year Students at Missouri State University

Download or read book The Impact of Participation in a Curricular Learning Community on Academic Success Academic and Social Integration Institutional Commitment and Persistence of First year Students at Missouri State University written by Michael B. Wood and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study of 471 first-semester students was to explore the impact of participation in a curricular learning community (CLC) on the academic success, academic and social integration, institutional commitment, and persistence of first-year students at Missouri State University (MSU), a Midwest, public, four-year university. The researcher utilized a modified version of Pascarella and Terenzini's (1980) Institutional Integration Scale (IIS) to measure constructs associated with increased academic success, such as (a) peer group interactions, (b) interactions with faculty, (c) faculty concerns for student development and teaching, (d) academic and intellectual development, and (e) institutional and goal commitment. The findings of the study revealed no significant differences between the CLC and non-CLC groups on any subscales measured by the IIS. Moreover, no significant differences were found between the CLC and non-CLC groups in demographic measures, suggesting the two groups were indeed similar. Implications for practice suggest a need for additional professional development for participating faculty members. Additionally, efforts should focus on greater integration of curricular and co-curricular content within the CLCs. Recommendations for further research include a mixed-method, longitudinal design to obtain a better understanding of the subtleties of students' experiences in the CLCs.

Book The Impact of a Sense of Belonging in College

Download or read book The Impact of a Sense of Belonging in College written by Erin Bentrim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sense of belonging refers to the extent a student feels included, accepted, valued, and supported on their campus. The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover, belonging is influenced by the campus environment, relationships, and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors, the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. A compendium of research, applications, and approaches to sense of belonging did not exist, so they brought this book into being to serve as a single point of reference in an emerging and promising field of study.

Book excerpt: This publication¿the latest report from AAC&U¿s Liberal Education and America¿s Promise (LEAP) initiative¿defines a set of educational practices that research has demonstrated have a significant impact on student success. Author George Kuh presents data from the National Survey of Student Engagement about these practices and explains why they benefit all students, but also seem to benefit underserved students even more than their more advantaged peers. The report also presents data that show definitively that underserved students are the least likely students, on average, to have access to these practices.

Book Engaging Underprepared Community College Students

Download or read book Engaging Underprepared Community College Students written by Erika Glaser and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to close the achievement gaps between traditionally underserved groups and their peers, institutions of higher education must make developmental education a priority by implementing college-wide strategies inside and outside the classroom to help underprepared students succeed. Since community colleges offer educational opportunities to anyone seeking to further their education, and hence serve the majority of underprepared college students, it is difficult to overstate the importance of assessing and strengthening the quality of educational practices for developmental students at these institutions. Assessing the extent to which underprepared college students are actively engaged in meaningful educational experiences, and the relationship between engagement and student outcomes, will help college leaders and policymakers implement research proven engagement strategies to help a population of students that has been historically underserved attain academic success and reap the societal and economic benefits of higher education. Relationships between engagement and three critical outcomes for underprepared college students were investigated: developmental sequence completion, subsequent college-level course performance, and attainment. Similar to studies conducted on the four-year sector, the present study found similar effects of engagement on developmental students attending community colleges. While generally having a positive effect on outcomes, engagement has been proven to have compensatory effects for students which have been typically underserved including minority, nontraditional age, and first-generation students. The present study found that the impact of engagement varies according to student characteristics and level of developmental course need and subject area. Further, the study suggests that certain types of engagement can have greater influence on students which characteristically are least likely to earn a college degree.

Book The Impact of Themed Learning Communities on Academic Performance and Retention

Download or read book The Impact of Themed Learning Communities on Academic Performance and Retention written by Rita M. Zientek and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student retention has become an important issue for colleges and universities in America. Researchers suggest that an effective way to accomplish first year student integration is to provide an extended experience which combines academic integration with social integration. The learning communities program offered by the College provides such an experience. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of themed learning communities on the academic performance and retention of first year students entering Buffalo State College in the fall of 2001, fall 2002, and fall 2003. These three cohorts were divided into two groups, those who participated in the learning communities program each semester and those who did not. Pre-college characteristics were determined for each group to ensure the participants and non-participants were similar. Academic performance was measured by the semester and cumulative grade point averages, and the percentage of students in good academic standing after their first semester. Retention was measured by the percentage of students returning to Buffalo State College for subsequent semesters. Analysis of variance and chi-square tests of independence were used to analyze the data. Results show that participating in the learning communities program had a significant impact on first-semester grade point average and academic standing for two of the three cohorts studied.
