Book Mental Health and Social Policy

Download or read book Mental Health and Social Policy written by David Mechanic and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a few years ago there was much optimism that the American health care system would be reformed and that we would have a system of universal insurance entitlement with few people uninsured. The realization that full mental health benefits would only be financially acceptable within a managed care framework suggests the importance of managed care as an instrument for achieving broader coverage at an acceptable cost. Yet, it remains to be seen to what extent the marketplace will direct the future development of managed care and what role professional agencies, government, and consumer organizations will have in making managed care organizations accountable to the public. This book takes a multidisciplinary approach to mental health and social policy. It covers mental health issues such as definitions of mental disorders, the epidemiology of mental illness, case management, community treatment, mental health research, and questions of policy. It also includes the definitions of disability and the links to federal programs and housing and employment services that will be of special interest to social workers. Mental health care providers, social workers, and therapists.

Book The Community Mental Health System

Download or read book The Community Mental Health System written by Elizabeth Lee Teed and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2007 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this text is to provide mental health professionals, both those in the field and those in training, a better understanding of the service delivery system and ideas for how to work effectively in it. It examines various driving forces-deinstitutionalization, empirically based practices, managed care--both in the evolution of the present community mental health care system, as well as the impact on the overall system today. The text begins with an overview of the Community mental health field, including the impact of deinstitutionalization on it. Next, it provides a description of the ecological model and the prevention paradigm, both conceptualizations needed to navigate through the system. Individual-oriented tools include stress management and brief therapeutic techniques. Systems-oriented tools include consultation strategies, community research methods and change techniques. These techniques provide the professional with effective tools to produce large-scale reform. The values that community mental health professionals must consider include cultural responsiveness, empowerment, and the ethical concerns unique to helping agency-affiliated individuals in the community. The book concludes by exploring a vision of the future of the system: a description of the needs of the elderly, the fastest growing segment of our population. Also covered are programs designed to help this population and dramatic changes expected in the types of mental health interventions that corporate employers and their insurance companies will support.

Download or read book Community Mental Health and Managed Care the Impact of These Systems on a Clinician s Identity written by Angela J. Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a qualitative analysis of clinicians working in outpatient community mental health centers that identifies challenges, barriers and obstacles to providing optimum therapeutic services to participants in these programs. The literature review illistrates the constraints that clinicians experience when delivering services in light of numerous regulations, large caseloads and changing policies and procedures. A review of the literature was conducted to gather information on community mental health centers, managed care, short-term therapy, and current regulations and its impact on the therapist's ability to provide quality services. Following the review, interviews were conducted to gather information about what clinicians identify as important to them in regard to treatment and positive outcomes. Ther were a total of five participants in the study. All five completed the survey and one participant agreed to complete the in-person interview. Once completed the interview was analyzed using grounded theory techniques. Data from the survey indicated that participants felt that the role of the therapist in the comminity health center met their expectations. Results from the interview revealed emerging themes regarding the difficulty of balancing administrative tasks and clinical responsibilities.
