Innovation may be either radical, changing business models and markets, or incremental, step-by-step improvements in products or processes. The Emirati government has tried to raise awareness of the importance of innovation and developed leadership programs to facilitate innovative practices. One focus is helping leaders understand the value of organizational culture, and how this can affect innovation. There are four main types of culture. A hierarchical culture focuses on development of routine and discipline in sustaining strict modes of operation. A market culture revolves around the development of strategic processes and policies to align with competitiveness in the business environment. a clan culture emphasizes shared values and goals and builds teams. this type of culture often improves employee development and levels of loyalty. There are also a number of different types of leadership behavior, which may affect innovation. Instrumental leadership supports goal development to achieve control and bolster team spirit. Supportive leadership focuses on development of sustainable relationship between followers and leaders within the organization. The importance of supportive leadership in encouraging innovation is through employee empowerment. It also helps to increase creativity and improve individual accountability. Participative leadership focuses on task execution. It influences motivation by allowing employees to participate in decision-making. Leaders use employee performance management to encourage particular behaviors among employees , such as creativity and innovation. This study empirically investigated the impact of organizational culture on leadership behavior and organizational innovation in the oil and gas industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is expected to shed light on the important role of the relational dynamics between organizational leadership and organizational culture on organizational innovation within the UAE oil and gas industry and how performance management techniques mediate the development and implementation of these innovations. The study hypothesized that there would be a significant positive relationship between leadership behavior or organizational culture, and organizational innovation, mediated by employee performance management. An integrated questionnaire survey was applied to 430 middle management employees in five major oil and gas organizations in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The survey combined six demographic questions and four validated instruments on organizational culture, perceived leadership behavior, employee performance management and organizational innovation. The study found that organizational culture had a range of effects on innovation in oil and gas organizations in the UAE. Clan and adhocracy cultures both had positive impacts on radical and incremental innovation, but hierarchy and market cultures appeared to have no impact. All leadership behavior types had a positive impact on both radical and incremental innovation. All types of organizational culture apart from hierarchical also had a direct and positive impact on employee performance management. These results suggest that the role of management is crucial in determining the type of innovation in these organizations. Different types of leadership have varied effects on innovation, with participatory and instrumental leadership being the most important. The results also suggest that employee performance management is crucial for any kind of innovation. These findings suggest that it is important to understand the relationships between the study constructs to use them both effectively to deliver successful organizational innovations. The capacity to apply innovation as a strategic tool to improve productivity and competitiveness aligns with the level of employee involvement and the leadership styles used. Employee performance management appears to be an essential part of innovative practices in the organizations studied.

Findings: Effects of Leadership Styles on employee performance were found to have dissimilarity due to the mediating variables of culture and gender whereas communication was found to be one of the major ingredients of effective leadership style. Practical Implications/Limitations: Rational Relationships among variables have been deliberated through research findings of various authors to craft practicality of theoretical research while making it handy for practitioners and trainers. However, the presented model is to be tested through empirical research across the continents and various cultures. Book Relationship Between Leadership Styles Employee Commitment and Business Performance a Study of Black Top Managers in State owned Enterprises

Download or read book Relationship Between Leadership Styles Employee Commitment and Business Performance a Study of Black Top Managers in State owned Enterprises written by Tabea Regina Mabasa and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the leadership styles of black top managers, employee commitment and business performance in state-owned enterprises. With the transformation policies implemented in a post-democratic South Africa, the appointment of black managers into top management positions, in state-owned South African organisations, came with negative connotations and stereotypes attached to African leadership. These connotations have led to a concern about the ability of black managers to provide effective leadership in organisations. Whilst it is critical to appreciate that the business performance of an organisation is influenced by a cocktail of factors, indeed, leadership capability is often primarily questioned when strategic objectives are not achieved. It is for these reasons that the objective of this study sought to identify the prevalent leadership styles displayed by black top managers and to determine if these styles have any association with employee commitment and the business performance of State-owned Enterprises (SOEs). The study also explored the possible role of span of control in moderating the relationship between leadership styles and employee commitment. The study is grounded on the positivism philosophy. A deductive approach was employed to formulate the hypotheses so as to respond to the objectives of this study. A non-probability sampling method, specifically the judgemental sampling technique, was used to select black top managers in the SOEs. A survey method was employed to collect primary data in a cross-sectional manner from 232 direct reports of 38 black top managers in the state-owned enterprises in South Africa. The information collected was complemented by secondary data about the span of control of black top managers and the business performance of their units. Statistical analysis of collected data revealed that respondents perceived black top managers to predominantly display a transformational leadership style coupled with a contingent reward facet of the transactional leadership style. It was also observed that the transformational leadership style displayed a relationship with the affective commitment of employees. The study also found that as the span of control increases, the management by exception (Active) facet of transactional leadership style moderates the relationship between leadership style and organisational commitment. The findings of this study contribute to the building of a body of knowledge on African leadership within the context of management literature. This is owing to the fact that it provides invaluable insight to the leadership behaviour displayed by black top managers in SOEs within a South African context. While caution on attempts to generalise the studyaÌ22́Ơ4́Øs findings is necessary, in the studied population, top managers in South African SOEs and indeed their organisations may benefit from displaying a transformational leadership style as it lends itself to employee commitment. Further, the study also provides insights on moderating effect that span of control has in the mix of leadership style and employee commitment. The study contributes to theory and practice in the territory of leadership in an African context by highlighting the predominant usage of the transformational leadership style among black top CEOs in SOEs in South Africa, perhaps owing to the societal premium placed on the unique Ubuntu notion in South Africa. Besides this, the study also empirically demonstrates the link between the Management by Exception facet of the transactional leadership style and the affective commitment of employees. The implication of this finding is that black top managers SOEs that invest in the development practices coincident, particularly when spans of control are high, can engender levels of commitment in their employees that would prove beneficial to the organisation.

Book The Impact of Leader Attitude on Employee Performance and Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Impact of Leader Attitude on Employee Performance and Job Satisfaction written by Ilker Cingillioglu and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Professor Paul Hersey and leadership guru Ken Blanchard introduced and published a new revision of Situational Leadership Theory based on their previously formulated Life Cycle Theory of Leadership. As Situational Leadership Theory recognizes no single best style of leadership, effective leadership hinges predominantly on the task itself and on leaders' attitude and ability to define and adopt the most suitable leadership style in accordance with the competence, experience and skill level of the followers. Accordingly, this research paper aims to conduct an empirical analysis of Situational Leadership Theory for improving organizational leadership effectiveness through the use of Structural Equation Modelling techniques with the managers at SingTel (Singapore Telecom) as the main source of data and seeks to reveal the relationship of common leader attitudes via moderating variables with employee performance and job satisfaction.
