Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study research was to investigate the existing degree of relationship between leadership styles and student achievement for principals in small, rural, southeast districts in Arizona. Student achievement was measured by fifth grade AIMS Mathematic scores over a two year period. Leadership style of the principals was measured by the MLQ-5X survey completed by eight participants (principals) and 102 raters (teachers). Interviews were conducted with a subset of the principals to gather more information in relation to their leadership style. Each leadership attribute was examined in relation to the student achievement on AIMS mathematics test for quantitative data analysis. The qualitative data analysis was performed with a word and phrase frequency counter to identify specific themes across the leadership style. Based on the findings of this study it is recommended that principals use the MLQ survey each school year to modify or enhance their leadership style by focusing professional development on strengthening leadership styles to establish commonality within district leadership to enhance student achievement. To expand on the results of this study, future research is recommended to include student SES, compare school districts to identify trends in school test scores to determine if district leadership impacts building leadership that has an indirect impact on student achievement, and include stakeholders in the MLQ survey to gain feedback.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of leadership style on the secondary schools heads on their academic performance in selected secondary in Arusha city council. Theoretical framework was grouped on the types of leadership and the academic performance; the study used survey design assessing the impact of leadership style on academic performance in secondary schools in Arusha City Council. It involved seventy (70) respondents in selected secondary schools in Arusha City. Empirical data was collected using questionnaires and SPSS was used as a tool to analyze data. The findings indicated that, there is significance relationship between leadership style and the academic performance. The findings further indicated that, the types of leadership style used in selected secondary used in secondary school was participative and encourage relationship among the teachers, The study discovered that teachers are involved in decision making. There was positive impact of participatory leadership style of school heads that dominates the area on the academic performance in selected secondary Arusha City Council. In the light of this study it is recommended that the authorities are responsible for making educational policies and design to provide training and development programmes to head of schools to serve as reference policy decision on leadership.

Firstly, the study determines the overall type of leadership style adopted by upper and lower rural secondary schools in Nigeria. Secondly, it establishes the principal leadership style behavior in both upper and lower secondary schools. Finally, the study intends to investigate the influence of the Nigerian principal leadership style on student achievement in upper and rural secondary schools. The research design used is a quantitative descriptive sectional survey research design. The theoretical or educational gap, locational gap, and the approach gap were identified. In the research process, the researcher utilized two survey questionnaires, "Leadership Orientation Survey" from Bolman and Terrence E. Deal which has three sections, leadership styles, leaders' behavior, and overall rating respectively. The second survey contains one section “principal leadership survey”. Forty-six teachers in upper and forty in lower rural secondary schools were asked, but only 20 in upper and 20 in lower responded during the research. Frequency, percentage, and mean were used.

Most research surrounds the management's leadership and how it affects the environment and people around them in an academic institution or the instructional leadership of instructors and how it affects students. There is little to no research done on students' leadership styles and how these various leadership styles affect their academic performance. The importance of this study surrounds the need to understand students to better cater to them. By understanding students' leadership styles and their effects on academic performance, instructors can better cater to the needs of these students to prepare them for the rest of their educational journey. This study will be done by conducted by running an ANOVA test. Data would be collected through a questionnaire that is entirely voluntary for students to part-take in, and the target audience would be current residential undergraduate students from any course and program offered by the school of education within a faith-based institution and have completed ENGL 101 - Composition and Rhetoric. Bivariate regression analysis would then be used to establish the strength of the relationship between the leadership styles of students and their academic performance. The results of the study were that there was no statistical difference in academic performance among the transformational leadership style, the transactional leadership style, and the passive-avoidant leadership style among students. Future research should be done in the areas of multiple faith-based institutions with an increased population and testing across the areas of age, gender, and ethnicity.

Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of principals' leadership styles on the academic achievement of students as measured by the Mississippi Curriculum Test, Second Edition (MCT2). The 2013-2014 school year MCT2 mathematics and language arts scores were used as measures of student achievement and high-stakes testing. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ5x) was distributed to 420 principals. However, because of incomplete information given by the principals on the questionnaire, and the fact that the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) did not report MCT2 scores for particular schools, some of the principals' information was not useful; thus leaving the researcher with a sample size of n = 110 participants. This study was guided by 2 research questions. Relationships were analyzed using the Multivariate test for Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) in which the variable of socioeconomic status was used as a covariate because it was found to result statistically different scores across group means. The research questions sought to determine what type of principal leadership style resulted in higher student achievement in mathematics and language arts.

Book excerpt: School administrators face several challenges ranging from opposing stakeholders, to frequent deadlines, to the pressures of No Child Left Behind. The principals of high poverty, low-funded schools have additional obstacles hindering them from student achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine predictive relationships between leadership style and student achievement in high poverty, low-funded schools. Data on leadership style was collected from 103 elementary principals located in high poverty, low-funded schools in Missouri during the spring of 2007. The data analysis for the study included Pearson product movement correlations, backward multiple linear regression analysis, and open-coding. The results of the study found that out of all leadership styles, active management-by-exception had a significant negative correlation with overall, communication arts, and math student achievement. It was also a predictive variable in low student performance. Open-coding identified goal setting, personal attention, and accountability as supporting themes.
