Book The Impact of Internalizing Symptoms on Impairment for Children with ADHD

Download or read book The Impact of Internalizing Symptoms on Impairment for Children with ADHD written by Sarah Catherine Bethune and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background/Purpose: ADHD is frequently associated with functional deficits across social, familial, and academic contexts (Pelham, 2005). Children with ADHD and internalizing symptoms typically experience higher levels of functional impairment compared to their counterparts with exclusively ADHD (Bishop et al., 2019). Positive parenting practices and child strengths have been found to play a protective role for children with ADHD (Healy et al., 2011; McCrimmon et al., 2018). This study aims to investigate the influence of internalizing symptoms on functional impairment for children with ADHD. Child strengths and parenting strengths have been examined to identify moderating effects of the aforementioned constructs. Methods: Data were collected in a community mental health centre using the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths questionnaire (CANS) and the Child Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). Participants included 209 children and their caregivers seeking mental health services between the ages of 5 and 11 with an ADHD diagnosis. To examine the moderating effects of parenting and child strengths, ordinary least squares regression models were tested using the PROCESS macro for SPSS (v3.5; Hayes, 2018). Results: Results suggest that levels of internalizing symptoms influence functional impairment in children with ADHD. Child strengths moderate the relationship between internalizing symptoms and functional impairment when internalizing symptoms are medium to high. Conclusion: Findings from this study demonstrate that facilitating child strengths can help moderate functional impairment for children who experience ADHD and internalizing symptoms.

Book The Effect of Internalizing Symptomatology on Executive Functioning Performance and Processing Speed in Children with ADHD

Download or read book The Effect of Internalizing Symptomatology on Executive Functioning Performance and Processing Speed in Children with ADHD written by Gina B. Christopher and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood psychological disorders with prevalence estimates ranging from 3%-7% (APA, 2000) and one of the most thoroughly studied child neurocognitive disorders. Children with ADHD have consistently shown executive functioning and processing speed deficits on a variety of measures (Berlin, Bohlin, Nyberg, & Janols, 2004; Geurts, Verté, Oosterlaan, Roeyers & Sergeant, 2004; Nigg, 1999; Nigg, Blaskey, Huang-Pollock & Rappley, 2002). The research on executive functioning deficits in other childhood disorders has been comparatively lacking. There is some research that suggests that internalizing disorders, such as anxiety and depression, can also have a detrimental effect on certain executive functioning domains (Airaksinen, Larsson, & Forsell, 2005; Christopher, & MacDonald, 2005; Emerson, Mollet, & Harrison, 2005). It is unclear how these internalizing symptoms will impact executive functioning, processing speed and fine motor control in children with ADHD. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the presence of internalizing symptoms impacts the ability of children with ADHD to perform executive functioning, processing speed, and fine motor control tasks. In order to assess this, the predictive ability of gender, ADHD subtype, parent ratings of anxiety, and parent ratings of depression were examined for processing speed, working memory, response inhibition, vigilance and fine motor control tasks. Gender was found to predict differences in working memory, response inhibition and fine motor control. ADHD subtype was found to predict differences in response inhibition. Parent ratings of anxiety were found to interact with ADHD subtype to predict some aspects of vigilance. Parent ratings of anxiety and of depression were found to predict differences in other aspects of vigilance looking across gender and subtype. Finally, teacher ratings of anxiety were found to predict differences in working memory.

Book Functional Impairments in Children with ADHD Unique Effects of Comorbid Status and ADHD Subtype

Download or read book Functional Impairments in Children with ADHD Unique Effects of Comorbid Status and ADHD Subtype written by Genery D. Booster and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is found in approximately 3-10% of school-aged children and has been linked to deficits in academic and social functioning. In addition to functional impairments, children with ADHD are at risk for the development of comorbid psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder. Research findings suggest that children with ADHD and another comorbid disorder display poorer functioning than children with ADHD alone, though little research has examined the differential impact of each type of comorbidity (e.g., externalizing vs. internalizing). In addition, the existing literature is limited by a number of methodological concerns including diverse definitions of internalizing disorders and the exclusion of children with predominantly inattentive type.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully revised and updated edition of the groundbreaking book on tackling the root causes of children’s attention and behavior problems rather than masking the symptoms with medication. More than twenty years after Dr. Thomas Armstrong's Myth of the A.D.D. Child first published, he presents much needed updates and insights in this substantially revised edition. When The Myth of the A.D.D. Child was first published in 1995, Dr. Thomas Armstrong made the controversial argument that many behaviors labeled as ADD or ADHD are simply a child's active response to complex social, emotional, and educational influences. In this fully revised and updated edition, Dr. Armstrong shows readers how to address the underlying causes of a child's attention and behavior problems in order to help their children implement positive changes in their lives. The rate of ADHD diagnosis has increased sharply, along with the prescription of medications to treat it. Now needed more than ever, this book includes fifty-one new non-drug strategies to help children overcome attention and behavior problems, as well as updates to the original fifty proven strategies.

Book The Longitudinal Effects of Parent Emotion Socialization and ADHD Symptoms in Childhood on Adolescent Emotion Dysregulation

Download or read book The Longitudinal Effects of Parent Emotion Socialization and ADHD Symptoms in Childhood on Adolescent Emotion Dysregulation written by Arianna E. Mordy and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One commonly recognized impairment in children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is emotion dysregulation (Graziano & Garcia, 2016). Research suggests that one factor that may affect the development of emotion dysregulation is the ways in which parents react in response to their child's expressions of negative emotion. This is a form of emotion socialization, which influences a child's understanding, expression, regulation, and overall experience of emotion (Eisenberg, Cumberland & Spinrad, 1998). For children with ADHD who exhibit emotional over-reactivity and who struggle with behavioral inhibition, the addition of non-supportive parent emotion socialization practices (i.e., minimizing or punishing emotions) may exacerbate their emotional impairments and, over time, increase their risk for developing emotion dysregulation. It is also possible that supportive parent emotion socialization practices (i.e., validation, emotion coaching, or aid with problem-solving) may protect youth with ADHD who would otherwise develop emotion dysregulation. Yet the effect of parent emotion socialization on emotion dysregulation has not been well-explored in ADHD samples. This study was the first to examine ADHD symptoms and parent emotion socialization in childhood, and their relation to adolescent emotion dysregulation five to six years later. Participants were 88 children with and without clinically significant ADHD symptoms. During the first study visit (Time 1), participants were ages 8-13 years, and were ages 13-19 years at follow-up (Time 2). At Time 1, parent reports of emotion socialization, as well as parent and teacher reports of child ADHD symptoms were collected. At Time 2, adolescent emotion dysregulation was assessed using combined reports from adolescents and parents. Results indicated that Time 1 ADHD symptoms significantly predicted greater Time 2 emotion dysregulation; this effect was not accounted for by childhood comorbid Oppositional Defiant Disorder symptoms, Conduct Disorder symptoms, or internalizing problems. A specific aspect of parent supportive emotion socialization, expressive encouragement, also significantly predicted Time 2 emotion dysregulation, above and beyond ADHD symptoms. No interaction of ADHD symptoms with emotion socialization measures emerged, suggesting that regardless of parent emotion socialization strategy, children with higher levels of ADHD symptoms were more likely to be emotionally dysregulated in adolescence. These results indicate that two forms of intervention in childhood may be helpful in preventing emotion dysregulation in adolescence: behavioral treatment of ADHD symptoms and parent intervention focusing on validation."--Page 4.
