Book The Nation s Physician Workforce

Download or read book The Nation s Physician Workforce written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-01-19 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enormous changes are occurring in the organization and financing of the U.S. health care systemâ€"rapid changes that are being driven by market forces rather than by government initiatives. Although it is difficult to predict what they system will look like once it begins to stabilize, the changes will affect all components of the health care workforce, and the numbers and types of health care professionals that will be needed in the futureâ€"as well as the roles they will fillâ€"will surely be much different than they were in the past. Despite numerous studies in the past 15 years showing that we might have more doctors than we need, the number of physicians in residency training continues to grow. At the same time, there is evidence that the demand for physician services will decrease as a result of growth of managed care. All of this is evidence that the demand for physician services will decrease as a result of growth of managed care. All of this is taking place at a time when, coincident with the result of failure of comprehensive health care reform, there is no coordinated and widely accepted physician workforce policy in the United States. The present study examines the following three questions: (1) Is there a physician policy in the United States? (2) If there a surplus, what is its likely impact on the cost, quality, and access to health care and on the efficient use of human resources? (3) What realistic steps can be taken to deal with a physician surplus? December

Book Recent Trends in International Migration of Doctors Nurses and Medical Students

Download or read book Recent Trends in International Migration of Doctors Nurses and Medical Students written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes recent trends in the international migration of doctors and nurses in OECD countries. Over the past decade, the number of doctors and nurses has increased in many OECD countries, and foreign-born and foreign-trained doctors and nurses have contributed to a significant extent. New in-depth analysis of the internationalisation of medical education shows that in some countries (e.g. Israel, Norway, Sweden and the United States) a large and growing number of foreign-trained doctors are people born in these countries who obtained their first medical degree abroad before coming back. The report includes four case studies on the internationalisation of medical education in Europe (France, Ireland, Poland and Romania) as well as a case study on the integration of foreign-trained doctors in Canada.

Book Recruitment of Health Professionals from Abroad

Download or read book Recruitment of Health Professionals from Abroad written by Bikal Dhungel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Medicine and Health, grade: 1,0, University of Aberdeen (College of Life Sciences and Medicine), language: English, abstract: Scarcity of Healthcare professionals especially Doctors and Nurses is a worldwide phenomenon. On one hand demographic factors like population growth is bringing problems with it for example the demand of more healthcare, on the other hand the ageing population also comes up with age related diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. If Health Technology fails to develop further, it is obvious that we will have to face difficult challenges in the future. To meet the demand of more healthcare professionals, countries like the UK are very dependent on foreign countries that supply such people, like nurses from some East Asian countries. The scarcity of Healthcare Professionals is also a big problem for developing countries. Population growth and ageing not only generates the scarcity of health professionals but also brings the need to expand health infrastructures. For example, the healthcare institutions and health workforce that exist today were designed when the size of population was lower. So, today with higher growth of population, the expansion of health-infrastructures as well as health personnel is vital to meet the demand and to maintain the quality of healthcare.
