Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education has become a battlefield, the classroom the arena where the contest is fought. The 1997 Ontario teachers' strike, the federal government's Millennium Scholarship, and a wave of protests across the country are among the signals that the war is heating up. Alberta stands as a Canadian model of radical education reform, propelled by economic necessity. But is all reform necessarily right or good?-and who decides? A range of commentators-teachers, scholars, parents, and others-discuss the conflict in Alberta's schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding educational success of Alberta or Finland needs to include an awareness of socio-cultural, political, and economic factors-issues covered in several chapters of this book.Indeed, education policies that drive better equity and equality in these systems must be kept at the center of attention when considering any lessons from these high-performing school systems.Finland has shown, just like Alberta, that educational change should be systematic and coherent, in contrast with the current haphazard intervention efforts of many other countries...my own conclusion is that developing the capacities of schools through interventions like AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) in Alberta and school-led curriculum system in Finland is much more important than testing the hell out of students, and that some out-of-school policies and support mechanisms to families and children associated with health, well-being and happiness are also necess

Book Educational Accountability

Download or read book Educational Accountability written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age when responses to accountability regimes in education range from hysteria to cynicism, this volume reframes accountability in narratives of collective, participatory responsibility that leave one feeling inspired and ready to act. The authors, all scholar-practitioners speaking from contexts spanning leadership, policy, literacy, indigenous education, and diversity, explore ways to navigate accountability discourses with wisdom, courage and hope.—Tara Fenwick, PhD, Head, Dept. of Educational Studies, University of British Columbia. In this collection, the preoccupation of educational institutions with accountability is critically examined by writers who work in the field. They consider the impact of accountability regimes on professional practice and the learning agenda, challenge current policies and call for a rethinking of accountability. The skills and knowledge associated with this work is what we should hold schools accountable to. It is, as you see from reading these contributions, time for change.—Stephen Murgatroyd, PhD, Chief Scout, The Innovation Expedition Inc. About the Book From their diverse perspectives, nine educational practitioners discuss current educational accountability policies and how these affect students, educators, learning and teaching in a variety of settings, from K-12 schools to post-secondary institutions and government agencies. The authors combine theory, research and their day-to-day experiences to reflect on the challenges posed by realities such as outcomes-based curricula, high-stakes testing, standardized reporting and management by objectives. By examining current accountability initiatives and their effects in relation to core values of public education such as equity, diversity, democracy and opportunity, this book offers educators a range of insights for thinking about and doing education differently.

Book Market Values in Education

Download or read book Market Values in Education written by Dean G. Lindquist and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political bodies, facing, increased pressures to improve the quality of education offered to students, are shifting to a philosophy that imposes large scale market forces such as parental choice and school competition onto educational systems in order to coerce school improvement. This shift may be prompting school-based administrators to shift school governance practices to reflect these market values. This shift, occurring in Alberta (Canada), is founded in government policy that articulates the option of educational choice for parents. Presently the government policy promotes these market values in education by providing full funding to public, separate, and charter schools, and partial funding to accredited private schools thus creating an atmosphere of competition and parental choice between schools. Public choice theory, emanating from neoclassical economics, is the economics model that this model operates within the educational system. A total of seventeen Alberta public, separate, charter, and private school principals were interviewed in this multi-site case study investigating the shift toward market values in education. The purpose of this study was to determine if principals perceived a change toward a market model, and to gain insight into what might be the implications for principals' school governance as a result of the application of market forces. Specifically, the study examined what these principals believe are the effects of the application of market forces on the governance of their schools. Findings of this study support the contention that a political movement is at the root of this reform. As part of this reform, the findings suggest that an educational system of choice is developing in Alberta, and one of the results of this is increased competition between schools and school systems. Also emanating from this evolving market based educational system is a devolved school governance structure that includes changes to the structures of finance, school organization, and decision making. Consequently, successful school principals are requiring new knowledge and skills in order to lead their schools. Specifically, the findings imply that the principal of a school operating in a market based educational milieu will require enhanced human resources, marketing, leadership, and management skills.

Book Extending Educational Reform

Download or read book Extending Educational Reform written by Amanda Datnow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-14 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to improve student achievement, thousands of US schools have adopted school reform models devised externally by universities and other organizations. Such models have been successful in improving individual schools or groups of schools, but what happens when educational reform attempts to extend from one school to many? Through qualitative data from several studies, this book explores what happens when school reform 'goes to scale'. Topics covered include: *why and how schools are adopting reforms *the influence of the local context and wider constraints on the implementation of reform *teachers and principals as change agents in schools *the evolution of reform design teams *the implementation, sustainability and expiration of reform, and its impact on educational change Each chapter concludes with guidelines for policy and practice. This book will be of interest to educational leaders and staff developers, educational researchers and policy makers, in the US and internationally.

Book Leadership From the Middle

Download or read book Leadership From the Middle written by Andy Hargreaves and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-17 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of a global pandemic, catastrophic weather events, war, racism, and attacks on democracy, how should educational leaders respond? How can leaders enable their schools and districts to be agile, safe, and effective places of learning that help young people develop the knowledge and character that will empower them to shape their futures? While some schools and districts have taken top-down or bottom-up approaches, renowned education scholar Andy Hargreaves explores a new type of leadership – "leadership from the middle" – which becomes a driver of transformational change. Drawing from research with educational leaders across the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, Hargreaves discusses a type of leadership that regards obstacles as opportunities, embraces leadership paradox, and is collaborative, inspiring, and inclusive. This ground-breaking book unpacks not only what this type of leadership looks like, but also how it is most effective in addressing complex problems and in educating young people to develop diverse global competencies to prepare them for their futures.
