Additionally, this thesis seeks to understand which impact globalization has on cultures and how this might influence national identity. In order to grasp the versatile field of culture, this thesis starts with finding a generally accepted definition for this multilayered topic. After that, it examines three culture models by Schein, Hall and Hofstede, three well-known scholars in the field of culture, who should help graphing culture by the means of their models. This thesis conceptualizes the similarities within the mentioned culture models. As for any country analyzation it is important to understand that no one is to judge another culture, therefore this thesis will briefly introduce the topic of cultural relativism in order to prevent any misconceptions. As mentioned, this thesis aims at understanding how globalization is influencing cultures. Therefore, this paper elaborates on three different scenarios on how globalization influences the cultural identity. These so-called three H’s of cultural globalization are analyzed to identify how globalization might change the cultural world view. The following chapter, which focuses on analyzing Swedish culture, firstly introduces Sweden by means of the SIMM and Hofstede’s culture onion and secondly by using a dialectic approach to analyzing culture, namely Hofstede’s dimensions and the Yin-Yang principle. This mutuality of concepts shall help understanding the complexity of a culture analysis. Within the penultimate chapter, the topic of leadership is generally defined and Swedish leadership style analyzed by the GLOBE study, followed by a selected leadership model, the Competing Values Framework. This model is firstly defined and in a next step merged with previous findings from Hofstede’s Dimensions, the GLOBE study and the Yin-Yang principle. The combination of these models shall help answering the main research questions. In the last chapter, the author summarizes the main findings by answering the research questions. To conclude this thesis, the limitations of this work are outlined, as well as possible future research.

Although one would assume quite various similarities between these countries due to geographical proximity and same origin of language, they are indeed quite different – an issue also investigated by Eoro Vaara. The aim of this paper is to show that even slight or subtle differences in cultural patterns should be considered. Therefore only who can communicate without cultural misunderstandings can experience successful cross-cultural negotiations. Sweden has been chosen since there is a lot of research about cultural differences between American, Asian and Arab countries, but hardly any regarding inter-European. Another reason is also because of personal experiences in Sweden and with Swedish friends. It was challenging to investigate in a country, which does not seem to be culturally much apart from Germany. After a short introduction, the second chapter gives the reader a definition for culture and an overview of Hofstede’s model of dimensions. This chapter also presents the different kind of cultures from a German and Swedish perspective. Therefore the third chapter deals with negotiations between Germans and Swedes while doing business. This paper ends with the chapter “conclusion”.

Background Information IKEA is a well known Swedish company where almost every European person under 30 has purchased something from to decorate their flats. In only a few decades the company “went from the woods of southern Sweden to 31 countries around the world”1 and has become a large Multinational cooperation (MNC) with an interorganisational network.2 Higher tariffs, transport costs and the loss of economies of scale in domestic production further encourage production abroad.3 The Swedish market is comparably small and IKEA had to expand in order to keep their steady growth rates. The success came as a surprise to many since the furniture business is originally a local business.4 IKEA is the only company in their field, that has been able to expand so widely. The company seems to offer something that is unique to people and that appeals to them as something preferable. The background of the company seems to play a role in managing this uniqueness where Swedish influence on leadership, corporate culture and product offer leads towards the successful “IKEA spirit”. While the internationalisation of IKEA is one of the reasons for their great success, it seems that it is also the source of trouble. It seems that today’s “game of global strategy [is] increasingly ... a game of coordination”5. The difficulties that IKEA faces is to keep their unique “IKEA spirit” and still be successful around the world. 1.2. Aim of the Paper The aim of the paper is to look at the sources for IKEAs success where special emphasis will be given to the Swedish impact on leadership, corporate culture and product offer and the success they have with it. Internationalisation puts challenges on the above success areas and those need to be evaluated, as well. 1.3. Delimitations IKEA is a very complex company and I couldn’t concentrate on all of the given information. For example, I did not write about the purchasing network and relationships to suppliers. Book excerpt: This thesis is an explorative research study in which I interviewed 16 leaders at St. Jude Medical (SJM), which is an American company with a satellite site in Stockholm, Sweden with 700 employees. Twelve of these sixteen leaders are Swedish and constitute the main source of information for this thesis. The remaining four leaders were senior managers from the USA, included to contrast the outcome of the Swedish interviews. The interviews were semi-open and on average ~40 minutes long. The purpose of the study was to isolate what challenges the leaders at SJM face and then try to find and identify common patterns in how they attack these problems. I envision this work to be of use to any junior manager who is starting his/her career and especially so if it is at an international company where cultural differences are present.
