Book The Impact of COVID 19 in the EU 27 Fishing Fleet

Download or read book The Impact of COVID 19 in the EU 27 Fishing Fleet written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis on the impact of COVID-19 on the performance of the EU-27 fishing fleet has been prepared based on the outcomes of the 2020 Annual Economic Report (AER) on the EU Fishing Fleet (STECF, 2020). Economic performance in 2020 is significantly driven by the combined effects of decline in demand and supply chain disruption resulting from the COVID-19 health crisis. Preliminary results indicate a decrease of 17% in landed value in 2020 compared to 2019 estimates. Our estimates suggest that the countries that have been impacted more by the COVID-19 in terms of value of landings (decrease larger than the EU average) are Bulgaria, Sweden, Greece, Romania, Lithuania, Portugal, Latvia, Cyprus and Poland; while Lithuania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, France, Portugal, Cyprus and Spain are affected more in terms of profits. Our estimates also suggest that the small-scale coastal fleet (SSCF) has been more impacted than the large-scale fleet (LSF).

This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment, undertaken in November 2020, is a follow-up to the initial assessment undertaken in April 2020, and used the same methodology. This present paper provides a summary of responses to questionnaires circulated to regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) and regional fisheries advisory bodies (RFABs) to determine the impacts of restrictions imposed by COVID-19, upon the management, production and supply of fisheries products from capture fisheries and aquaculture. Comparisons are made between the responses given in April 2020 in the early phase of the pandemic, and those given in November 2020, some seven months later. The objective is to provide a global overview of the impacts of COVID-19 from the perspective of the secretariats of regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) and regional fisheries advisory bodies (RFABs), and collate examples of good practices and suggestions to guide development of mitigation measures.

Book The 2020 Annual Economic Report on the EU Fishing Fleet STECF 20 06

Download or read book The 2020 Annual Economic Report on the EU Fishing Fleet STECF 20 06 written by Raúl Prellezo and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 Annual Economic Report (AER) on the European Union (EU) fishing fleet provides a comprehensive overview of the latest information available on the structure and economic performance of the EU Member State fishing fleets. Results indicate that the profitability of the EU fleet fell in 2018, registering a net profit of almost EUR 1 billion, down 23% from 2017. Lower catches and an increase in fuel prices partly explain this overall reduction. Thus, 2018 is a continuation of the decreasing trend observed in 2017. Nowcast estimates indicate that the performance of the fleet rebounded in 2019, while projections for 2020 show a contraction back to 2018 levels, chiefly brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak. In 2018, the EU fishing fleet numbered 81 199 vessels with a combined gross tonnage (GT) of 1.56 million tonnes and engine power of 6.2 million kilowatts; 78% of these vessels were active. EU fleet capacity has continued to decrease at a similar rate as that observed in previous years. Direct employment generated by the sector, amounted to 146 906 fishers, corresponding to 105 851 FTEs. These values follow a similar trend as the capacity indicators. Almost 29% of the employed persons were estimated as being unpaid labour. Average annual wage per FTE was estimated at EUR 24 287, a reduction compared to 2017. Remarkable, is the big dispersion along the different Member States, ranging from EUR 1 400 for Cypriot fishers to EUR 135 500 for Belgian fishers. In both cases with a value lower than in 2017.

Book Fisheries and the Law in Europe

Download or read book Fisheries and the Law in Europe written by Jonatan Echebarria Fernández and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-27 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining fisheries, Brexit, the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) and its consequences for the Fishing Industry in the UK and the EU, this book explores key issues within the complex topic of fisheries after Brexit. Assessing the new fishing relationship between the UK and the EU, which will continue to develop over the next decade, it provides an important study of the state of fisheries post-Brexit. Taking a cross-cutting economic, legal and policy approach, the book outlines the social and economic impacts of Brexit on the UK and EU fishing industries. It critically analyses the provisions relevant to fisheries in the TCA, reflects on the bilateral fishing negotiations between the EU, UK and Norway, providing inferences as to what the "new and special relationship" might be in fisheries. It then focuses on the 2020 Fisheries Act and explores internal divergences in the nations of the UK because of devolution. Taking an international approach, the work offers an exploration of cooperation in fisheries enforcement, international and regional obligations in marine conservation, and the new horizons for the UK in international fisheries organizations and arrangements now it is no longer a member of the EU. It offers an overview of expert opinion on fisheries post-Brexit, highlighting lessons learned and future developments for fisheries in a post-Brexit world. Having finally signed the Trade and Cooperation Agreement on 31 December 2020 after tense negotiations, the United Kingdom and European Union have found themselves in a new fisheries relationship. This book maps the complex social, economic, legal and policy issues of fisheries in a post-Brexit world and will be of interest to stakeholders and scholars.

Book Challenges and Opportunities for the EU Common Fisheries Policy Application in the Mediterranean and Black Sea

Download or read book Challenges and Opportunities for the EU Common Fisheries Policy Application in the Mediterranean and Black Sea written by Simone Libralato and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) in the Mediterranean and Black Sea faces several challenges also because of large ecological, economic, political and institutional differences across the basin. The challenge of CFP application is exacerbated by the legal/administrative situation, with large areas outside national/EU jurisdictions, by the different development of fisheries that result in fleet capacities highly different on opposite shores of some sub-basins, as well as by uneven monitoring and data availability across the basins that result in situations that hamper sustainable management. This book collates analyses related to the application of the principles included in the CFP in Mediterranean and Black Sea, including assessments of current status, scenario analyses, visions of best solutions, evaluation of critical hot spots and effects of regionalization of fisheries management. The eBook tackles from local to transboundary issues and solutions and provides a broad vision of problems together with important practical solutions for CFP application in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

Book Review of the techno economic performance of the main global fishing fleets

Download or read book Review of the techno economic performance of the main global fishing fleets written by Van Anrooy, R., Carvalho, N., Kitts, A., Mukherjee, R., Van Eijs, S., Japp, D., Ndao, S. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-06-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review of the techno-economic performance of the main global fishing fleets discusses the outcomes from 20 country-level studies of fishing fleets from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America. It includes financial, socio-economic and technical information from 103 major (semi-) industrial fishing fleet segments, which are responsible for an estimated 39 percent of marine capture fisheries production worldwide. The analysis of vessel characteristics reveals substantial differences in fishing capacity (in terms of vessel length, tonnage and power) between fleet segments. An increase in the gross tonnage of average vessels was observed in fleet segments also covered in previous reviews. Substantial increases in average length overall and engine power were observed in several Asian fishing fleets. The age structure of the fishing fleets in most regions, except Asia, shows an upward trend. An analysis of the costs and earnings data showed that labour and running costs were the two main cost components for the majority of fleet segments. Ninety-two percent of 97 fleet segments reported a positive net cash flow in the year they were surveyed, in the 2016–2019 period. Net profit margins of 10 percent or more were realized by average fishing vessels in 73 percent of the fleet segments. Returns on investment (ROIs) of 10 percent or higher were realized by 61 percent of the fleet segments. The review also discusses developments in fishing technologies. These developments, along with a general increase in seafood prices, successful fisheries management in some areas, and improved fleet capacity management in Europe and North America, have all contributed to the ongoing, positive financial and economic performance of the main global fishing fleets in recent years.

Download or read book The EU Fishing Fleet written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides additional insight on recent trends in the economic performance of the EU fleet and the potential drivers behind them, with supplementary analyses by main fishing region, type of fishing activity and Member State. Starting from the key findings of the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) '2019 annual economic report on the EU fishing fleet', it also includes evidence from recent studies and market analysis. The results highlighted in this paper indicted that the profitability of the EU fleet continues to be positive albeit minor decreases compared to the previous year, net profits were at €1.3 billion in 2017. Continued low fuel prices, stable average fish prices for a number of commercially important specie, alongside improved the status of some important stocks have contributed to this positive result. Employment generated by sector amounted to 151 981 fishers with average wages rising to €28 652. Overall, 2017 was a profitable year for the EU fishing fleets. Twenty-one of the 22 Member State fishing fleets evaluated registered gross profits. Projections for 2018 and 2019 show potential minor falls in profitability, mainly due to an increase in fuel prices.
