Book excerpt: Friendships outside of a heterosexual romantic relationship are common and fulfill needs for social support and intimacy. Cross-sex friendships (i.e., friendships with members of the opposite-sex) are generally as fulfilling as same-sex friendships and provide many of the same benefits (Monsour, 2001). However, cross-sex friendships may pose unique challenges to those in heterosexual romantic relationships. Using two studies, this research aimed to investigate the consequences of cross-sex friendship maintenance for different features of relationship functioning in heterosexual romantic relationships as well as potential mechanisms underlying these associations. For Study 1 (n = 347 individuals), I employed a cross-sectional (non-dyadic) design with participants in heterosexual romantic relationships to test whether individuals with a greater number of cross-sex friendships, or who believe that their romantic partner has a greater number of cross-sex friendships, report lower levels of three macro-level relationship outcomes: commitment, relationship satisfaction, and trust. In Study 2 (n = 108 dyads), I used a daily diary design with heterosexual romantic dyads to evaluate whether individuals’ and their romantic partners’ daily interactions with cross-sex friends predict changes in individuals’ relational maintenance behaviors and romantic relationship satisfaction. In both studies, I also examined the indirect effect of friendship maintenance on relationship outcomes via feelings of jealousy and perceived availability of alternatives to one’s own partner. Friendship maintenance was unrelated to romantic relationship outcomes in both Study 1 and Study 2. However, Study 1 provided support for the hypothesis that the cross-sex friendships individuals and their partners hold are indirectly related to participants’ relationship outcomes via availability of alternatives and feelings of jealousy, respectively. Additionally, Study 2 provided evidence that daily contact with friends (regardless of gender) is related to lower levels of relationship satisfaction via a greater availability of alternatives. Interestingly, there was not much evidence to suggest that these effects are moderated by characteristics of the friendships, the romantic relationships, or the individuals. Taken together, this research increases our understanding of how heterosexual couples successfully navigate the challenges of cross-sex friendships and two of the mechanisms underlying these experiences.

Drawing on one year of ethnography and 20 in-depth interviews among a university sport team, the authors show that these men reject traditional masculine boundaries, instead prioritizing an emotional and tactile form of friendship. Chapters detail the cultural shift in society’s views on bromances, showing that bromances exists as an elevated, more emotional and intimate form of friendship, existing as a further positive consequence of decreasing cultural homophobia. By focusing on sport—which has traditionally been seen as a homophobic environment with toxic constructions of manhood—the authors show that even in the most traditionally masculine of settings, young men are rethinking what male friendship looks like, what it means to be a man, and the positive impact this can have on their mental health. Book excerpt: Scholars historically have separated friendships and romantic relationships into two qualitatively distinct relationship categories. Contemporary research examining passionate friendships, however, has identified qualities within platonic relationships that appear to mimic characteristics typically associated with romantic relationships. Primary critiques of the existing passionate friendship literature include exclusively examining females, including samples that predominately identified as lesbian, bisexual or questioning, and research utilizing solely qualitative designs. The current study used a quantitative design to investigate 375 emerging adults' (18-26 years of age; 149 males, 226 females) friendship experiences. Specifically, four quasi-independent variables (i.e., biological sex, sexual orientation, gender-role orientation, and cross vs. same-sex dyads) were examined as factors associated with passionate friendship. Findings from this study indicated that both males and females experience passionate friendship, and that these experiences are not specific to individuals who identify as nonheterosexual. Additionally, results from this study shed light on the occurrence of passionate friendship experiences observed in both cross- and same-sex dyads. Characteristics of passionate friendships (e.g., levels of attachment, thought preoccupation, intensity of the relationship) were also examined using a newly created measure. Female participants and individuals whose closest friend was described as a cross-sex friend scored higher on nearly every continuous scale of the designed measure. Additionally, sexual orientation and gender-role orientation yielded significant results on several of the identified subscales, with sexual-minority individuals and those who claimed androgynous or masculine gender-role orientation obtaining higher scores. Finally, predictability of passionate friendship occurrence was evaluated and indicated that passionate friendships may be predicted based on existing demographics or personality characteristics of an individual.
