Book The Impact of Climatological Variability on Surface Water Supply in Oklahoma

Download or read book The Impact of Climatological Variability on Surface Water Supply in Oklahoma written by Charles Christian Olsen and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequency and duration of surface water deficits in two river basins in western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle are examined for the thirty years, 1951-1980. The studied basins were divided into a total of 10 subbasins. A hydrologic accounting system, using precipitation and temperature as inputs, was used to derive variables such as potential (PET) and actual (ET) evapotranspiration, soil moisture and runoff. These were combined with basic hydrologic variables (stream discharge and lake contents) to calculate long-term weekly mean values and 75 percent empirical ranges for surface water storage and demand. Potential deficit periods were identified and examined using percentage frequency histograms and joint frequency tables. From these it was determined that surface water deficits existed in as many as 47 percent of the thirty years studied. The potential deficit period ranged from 2 weeks to 29 weeks, averaging 17 weeks. Case studies for two of the subbasins for a dry year, a wet year and an 'average' year are presented. Background climatologies for weekly precipitation (30-year means and means for the 5 driest years), weekly stream discharge and weekly lake contents for each of the ten major river basins in Oklahoma are presented.

Book Managing Water Resources in the West Under Conditions of Climate Uncertainty

Download or read book Managing Water Resources in the West Under Conditions of Climate Uncertainty written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of whether the earth's climate is changing in some significant human-induced way remains a matter of much debate. But the fact that climate is variable over time is well known. These two elements of climatic uncertainty affect water resources planning and management in the American West. Managing Water Resources in the West Under Conditions of Climate Uncertainty examines the scientific basis for predictions of climate change, the implications of climate uncertainty for water resources management, and the management options available for responding to climate variability and potential climate change.

Book Integrated Groundwater Management

Download or read book Integrated Groundwater Management written by Anthony J Jakeman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to document for the first time the dimensions and requirements of effective integrated groundwater management (IGM). Groundwater management is a formidable challenge, one that remains one of humanity’s foremost priorities. It has become a largely non-renewable resource that is overexploited in many parts of the world. In the 21st century, the issue moves from how to simply obtain the water we need to how we manage it sustainably for future generations, future economies, and future ecosystems. The focus then becomes one of understanding the drivers and current state of the groundwater resource, and restoring equilibrium to at-risk aquifers. Many interrelated dimensions, however, come to bear when trying to manage groundwater effectively. An integrated approach to groundwater necessarily involves many factors beyond the aquifer itself, such as surface water, water use, water quality, and ecohydrology. Moreover, the science by itself can only define the fundamental bounds of what is possible; effective IGM must also engage the wider community of stakeholders to develop and support policy and other socioeconomic tools needed to realize effective IGM. In order to demonstrate IGM, this book covers theory and principles, embracing: 1) an overview of the dimensions and requirements of groundwater management from an international perspective; 2) the scale of groundwater issues internationally and its links with other sectors, principally energy and climate change; 3) groundwater governance with regard to principles, instruments and institutions available for IGM; 4) biophysical constraints and the capacity and role of hydroecological and hydrogeological science including water quality concerns; and 5) necessary tools including models, data infrastructures, decision support systems and the management of uncertainty. Examples of effective, and failed, IGM are given. Throughout, the importance of the socioeconomic context that connects all effective IGM is emphasized. Taken as a whole, this work relates the many facets of effective IGM, from the catchment to global perspective.

Book Climate Change and Groundwater

Download or read book Climate Change and Groundwater written by Walter Dragoni and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a general consensus that for the next few decades at least, the Earth will continue its warming. This will inevitably bring about serious environmental problems. For human society, the most severe will be those related to alterations of the hydrological cycle, which is already heavily influenced by human activities. Climate change will directly affect groundwater recharge, groundwater quality and the freshwater-seawater interface. The variations of groundwater storage inevitably entail a variety of geomorphological and engineering effects. In the areas where water resources are likely to diminish, groundwater will be one of the main solutions to prevent drought. In spite of its paramount importance, the issue of 'Climate Change and Groundwater' has been neglected. This volume presents some of the current understanding of the topic.

Book Statewide Water Assessment

Download or read book Statewide Water Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following report was developed by the Oklahoma Water Resources Board and CDM, the OCWP's lead engineering firm, to assess Oklahoma's water supplies, develop projections of water demands, quantify physical supply shortages, determine the implications of potential climate change scenarios on projected supply and demand, assess anticipated water use permitting and interstate compact restraints, and provide relevant water quality data along with long-term trends.; The Oklahoma Comprehensive Water Plan (OCWP) assesses and plans for the water needs of all water uses and users in Oklahoma through 2060. Consumptive uses of water are addressed in this section. Nonconsumptive uses are discussed in other sections of the OCWP Executive Report.; A reliable water supply is contingent on all of the following aspects: * Physical water supply availability, or "wet water" * Permits or water rights to divert water from surface water or groundwater sources * Infrastructure to divert, treat, and convey the water to its intended use * Adequate water quality for the intended use.
