Book The impact of climate change on viticulture in Poland and Portugal

Download or read book The impact of climate change on viticulture in Poland and Portugal written by Franziska Hübsch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Economy - Environment economics, grade: 1,2, University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen (Weincampus Neustadt), language: English, abstract: This work will have a closer look at the cool-climate country Poland and the warm-climate country Portugal. The working assumption is, that the winemaking sector in cool-climate countries benefits from global warming effects, whereas warm-climate countries have to face major negative impacts and do have a higher urgency for adaption measures. Climate change is omnipresent. Its impacts on ecological, economic and social dimensions are significant. Also, in viticulture climate change has a major impact and affects the winemaker’s practice both in the short-term and in the long-term. Nowadays, the wine-growing area in Europe is mainly situated at a latitude between 30° and 50°N (northern hemisphere). Climate change, specifically global warming, affects those boundaries and challenges the current viticulture as well as traditional pathways. The impact of climate change will not take course in a homogenous way. The wine-growing regions are affected differently, partly with more positive or more negative outcome.

Book Viticulture and Winemaking under Climate Change

Download or read book Viticulture and Winemaking under Climate Change written by Helder Fraga and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of viticulture and the winemaking socio-economic sector is acknowledged worldwide. The most renowned winemaking regions show very specific environmental characteristics, where climate usually plays a central role. Considering the strong influence of weather and climatic factors on grapevine yields and berry quality attributes, climate change may indeed significantly impact this crop. Recent trends already point to a pronounced increase in growing season mean temperatures, as well as changes in precipitation regimes, which have been influencing wine typicity across some of the most renowned winemaking regions worldwide. Moreover, several climate scenarios give evidence of enhanced stress conditions for grapevine growth until the end of the century. Although grapevines have high resilience, the clear evidence for significant climate change in the upcoming decades urges adaptation and mitigation measures to be taken by sector stakeholders. To provide hints on the abovementioned issues, we have edited a Special Issue entitled “Viticulture and Winemaking under Climate Change”. Contributions from different fields were considered, including crop and climate modeling, and potential adaptation measures against these threats. The current Special Issue allows for the expansion of scientific knowledge in these particular fields of research, as well as providing a path for future research.

Download or read book Northern Viticulture written by Juha Karvonen and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant breeding and global warming has made it possible to grow adapted grape varieties in higher latitudes, north of 52 N latitude in Europe. The northernmost grape growing occurs nowadays in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland), the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and Poland. Some books available in English quite limited discuss the influence of climate, soil, photoperiodism, and long days during the growing season on grape growing in these new viticulture areas. This book does not provide direct hints on viticulture and does not act as a "cookbook" for wine growing, but instead explains how the current northern growth conditions differ from the growth conditions in the traditional viticulture countries, and what requirements they impose northern viticulture as well as how climate change will influence on them. - First time I found so much climate information on one time specifically for the vine. The work that is done is a large volume and enriches the information on vine for Nordic countries. Assoc. prof. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Meteorology, Aeronomy, Climatology, grade: 1, Kogi State Polytechnic, course: Economics, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the impact of climate change on agricultural output in Nigeria economy within the period of 1986 to 2017. The study employed Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL). The study examined the impact of climate change on Nigeria’s agricultural output. Investigated the existence of longrun relationship between climate change and agricultural outputs in Nigeria, examined the direction of causation between climate change and economic growth in Nigeria. From the findings it was discovered that one year lag value of carbon emission is highly significant, and it is positively related to agricultural output in the short run and long run. It was also discovered that one year lag of rainfall is negatively related to agricultural output and it is insignificant. Furthermore, it was also revealed that one year lag of temperature is positively related to agricultural output, meaning there is a positive relationship between agricultural output and temperature in Nigeria. The study therefore recommended that it is necessary for the government and other relevant authorities to constantly provide information on rainfall distribution ahead of time to help the farmers plan. And also recommended that government should ensure appropriate temperature information most especially there is need that various agricultural output needs to put into consideration.

Climate, freshwater, biophysical and socio-economic systems are interconnected in complex ways. Hence, a change in any one of these can induce a change in any other. Freshwater-related issues are critical in determining key regional and sectoral vulnerabilities. Therefore, the relationship between climate change and freshwater resources is of primary concern to human society and also has implications for all living species. -- page vii.

Book Climate Change Impact on Environmental Variability in the Forest

Download or read book Climate Change Impact on Environmental Variability in the Forest written by Leonel Jorge Ribeiro Nunes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the impact of climate change on rural forest areas. It analyses data provided by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) to not only demonstrate that climate change has occurred in Portuguese forests, but also to suggest how forestry practices can be adapted to minimise its effects. In turn, the book distils data collected over several years into a comprehensive and coherent review of the ways in which the climate has changed in Portugal. It addresses the changes in rainfall, temperatures, and climatic anomalies, and how these changes correlate with effects such as rural forest fires. Though the text chiefly focuses on Portugal, the tools implemented are easily transferable to other countries and regions, making it relevant to readers around the globe. The book offers a valuable asset for students, researchers, foresters and those working at environmental (research) institutions.

Book The Geography of Wine

    Book Details:
  • Author : Percy H. Dougherty
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-01-02
  • ISBN : 940070464X
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book The Geography of Wine written by Percy H. Dougherty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wine has been described as a window into places, cultures and times. Geographers have studied wine since the time of the early Greeks and Romans, when viticulturalists realized that the same grape grown in different geographic regions produced wine with differing olfactory and taste characteristics. This book, based on research presented to the Wine Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers, shows just how far the relationship has come since the time of Bacchus and Dionysus. Geographers have technical input into the wine industry, with exciting new research tackling subjects such as the impact of climate change on grape production, to the use of remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems for improving the quality of crops. This book explores the interdisciplinary connections and science behind world viticulture. Chapters cover a wide range of topics from the way in which landforms and soil affect wine production, to the climatic aberration of the Niagara wine industry, to the social and structural challenges in reshaping the South African wine industry after the fall of apartheid. The fundamentals are detailed too, with a comparative analysis of Bordeaux and Burgundy, and chapters on the geography of wine and the meaning of the term ‘terroir’.
