Book The Relationship Between Background Classical Music and Reading Comprehension on 7th and 8th Grade Students

Download or read book The Relationship Between Background Classical Music and Reading Comprehension on 7th and 8th Grade Students written by Evelyn Falcon and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine if there is any relationship on reading comprehension when background classical music is played in the setting of a 7th and 8th grade classroom. This study also examined if there was a statistically significant difference in test anxiety when listening to classical music while completing a test. Reading scores were calculated using a reading comprehension test from the Item Bank and Test Platform from Miami Dade County Public School. Anxiety was calculated by using a Likert- style anxiety survey developed by Nist and Diehl (1990). The participants for this research study consisted of a sample of 40 7th grade students and 52 8th grade students. This study’s 1st research question asked if there was an effect on reading comprehension in the scores of participants in the classical background music (experimental group) versus the students with no music (control group). Data from the t-test showed inconclusive results. The data showed that 7th grade students had no significant difference in comprehension mean score, while 8th graders did show a significant difference. The 2nd research question investigated if there was a relationship between test anxieties of students who tested with classical background music versus testing with no music. Results from the t-tests concluded that there is no significant difference in test anxiety when listening to classical background music.

Book The Effect of Music on the Reading Comprehension of Junior High School Students

Download or read book The Effect of Music on the Reading Comprehension of Junior High School Students written by Stacey A. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students often claim they can study for exams and complete homework assignments effectively while listening to music. However, scores on national achievement tests indicate otherwise. Empirical studies of the effects of lyrical music on reading comprehension are limited and mixed in their findings. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effects of lyrical music on the performance of a reading comprehension task in junior high school students. Theories such as personal construct theory and social identity theory formed the basis for the study; concepts such as attention and distraction, self-discipline and self-regulation, and the role of music in adolescent identity development and formation were considered. Three-hundred-thirty-four 7 th and 8th graders completed the reading comprehension subtest of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests, Fourth Edition, under nonmusic conditions and with accompanying music composed of Billboard Magazine's Top Hit Singles. Following the music portion of the test, the students completed a survey to assess their preference for or against listening to music as they study. An Analysis of Variance procedure determined that the reading performance declined significantly when listening to music. A point-biserial correlation illustrated a more pronounced detrimental effect on comprehension for students exhibiting a stronger preference for listening to music while studying. Results are important for furthering student, parent, and educator understanding of the internal and external influences on study habits with the goal of designing, implementing, and evaluating support systems and strategies uniquely tailored to the developmental needs and personal preferences of adolescents.

Book Instructional Design Implications about Comprehension of Listening to Music Before and During Reading

Download or read book Instructional Design Implications about Comprehension of Listening to Music Before and During Reading written by Amy F. Hinrichs and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low reading levels and lack of comprehension are current problems in high school classrooms confirmed by low standardized test scores and employer feedback as comprehension problems move into the workplace with students who do not have the necessary reading skills on the job. Midwestern high school science club students served as participants in the study with ages ranging from 14-18. The study was based on a pre-test-post-test control-group design by Creswell. Quantitative data was collected six times over a three-week period and was broken into two parts: Part 1 was three sessions using before-reading independent variables (classical, jazz, silence) with 69 students completing first three sessions; and Part 2 was three sessions of during-reading independent variables (classical, jazz, silence) with 75 students completing three sessions. This independent online course room study examined reading comprehension comparing pre and post-test comprehension results. Non-fiction high school level reading text sets were selected from "Quality Reading Inventory-5th edition" by Leslie and Caldwell (2011). Data was uploaded into a statistical analysis software program, "Statistical Package for Social Sciences" (SPSS version 21.0) which provided an analysis of data using one-way ANOVA and means testing. Analysis showed a negative difference in group means between pre-and post-test results in both parts of the study; however, three tests showed significant differences. Prior to the study, students completed a computerized version of the Scholastic Reading Inventory to determine lexile levels. Several implications for the field of instructional design emerged including careful use of electronic text and music as a potential distraction to comprehension.

Book Rockin the GRE

Download or read book Rockin the GRE written by Hannah Blythe Bolander and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study examined the effects of preferred popular music, non-preferred popular music, and classical music on college students' reading comprehension abilities. It addressed current shortcomings in the literature by presenting music to participants before rather than during testing and also by attempting to better equalize levels of arousal and mood that might be differentially affected by the various music types. After listening to each of the three music playlists, 33 undergraduate students at Butler University rated their enjoyment of the music, completed a music rating scale, self-reported their mood and arousal, and answered six GRE Reading Comprehension questions. Results showed that participants felt significantly more invigorated and less depressed after their preferred music compared to either non-preferred popular or classical music. While participants enjoyed their preferred music significantly more than the other two music types, my hypothesis that preferred popular music would exert a greater positive influence on reading comprehension than non-preferred popular music (which would, in turn, result in better reading comprehension than classical music) was not supported. Reading comprehension scores across each of the three conditions were almost identical. Thus, the current study provides no evidence that various types of music have differentiated effects on reading comprehension. Instead, results suggest that personal song selections can be utilized to improve individuals' energy levels and mood to a greater extent than either non-preferred popular music or upbeat classical music"--Leaf 3.

Book The Effects of Music on Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effects of Music on Reading Comprehension written by Özlem Erten and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of listening to music while reading on reading comprehension performance. The participants of this study were made up of 129 eighth grade students. The study was modeled by the randomized posttest-only control group design. A Music Appreciation Test and A Reading Comprehension Test, originally developed by the researcher, were used to determine the students' music preferences and reading comprehension performance, respectively. The results showed that the reading comprehension performance of the students who read the passage with their non-favored non-verbal music, non-favored verbal music, and favored verbal music were significantly poorer than those students who did not listen music while reading the same passage. Importantly, the current results also demonstrated that the reading comprehension performance of the students who listened to their favored instrumental music while reading did not considerably differ from the reading comprehension performance of those who did not listen to music.

Book excerpt: This study applied Smith's theory in general reading comprehension to music sight reading fluency and comprehension in instrumental music performers. The study tested the proposition that students taught memory recall, eye movement as an aid to chunking, and the predictive structures of melody will learn to incorporate these strategies into the music reading process. In order to test this theory, fifty-nine 7th through 12th-grade flute students were given instruction in aid to chunking and melodic predicting in four 50-minute lessons over a two week period. The study used a 2 x 2 factorial experimental design. Subjects were pretested with the Watkins-Farnum Performance Scale, form A and classified into two categories: more-skilled and less-skilled music readers. Subjects were then randomly stratified into two instructional treatment groups: (1) Aid to Chunking plus Melodic Predicting, and (2) Melodic Predicting Alone. Aid to Chunking instruction consisted of exercises in memory recall and eye movement using a tachistoscopic technique. Melodic predicting instruction used a modified cloze method. Four main structural components were emphasized in melodic predicting: (1) phrasing and tonality; (2) melodic contour; (3) melodic and rhythmic patterning; and (4) modulation. A sight reading posttest was given on the Watkins-Farnum Performance Scale, Form B as a measure of music reading comprehension and sight reading improvement. Instructional modules for aid to chunking and melodic predicting are included, as well as a melodic predicting posttest, related sight reading exercises, and a pre-performance guide as an adjunct to sight reading. Results indicated: (1) melodic predicting and music reading comprehension are highly correlated; (2) the overall treatment effect of aid to chunking on sight reading improvement was not supported; and (3) a very large readability interaction effect between melodic predicting and music reading comprehension was found. Further findings indicate: (1) the aid to chunking effect was highly significant for less-skilled music readers; and (2) melodic predicting was most effective for more-skilled readers.

Book The Effect of Listening to Music on Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effect of Listening to Music on Reading Comprehension written by Rebekah Kakos and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has shown that listening to music while studying can have an impact on student's ability to retain information. Students may score lower on reading comprehension tests when in a music listening condition as compared to studying in silence. This goes against the popular theory of a positive "Mozart Effect" on performance outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of different listening conditions on reading comprehension in college students. The current study utilized data from college students to offer insight into the effects of music. Results show that listening to vocal music while doing a reading comprehension task may be especially distracting to students. This study may help to identify effective study habits for students.
