After the school day ends, working parents of school-age children and youth need to secure adequate after-school care. During after school hours, between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., 19 percent of violent offenses committed by juveniles occur (U.S. Department of Justice, 2010). On the National Assessment of Educational Progress (2015) the average eighth-grade minority student performs at about the level of the average fourth-grade white student. These data indicate that the best use of time after school involves closing the achievement gap and providing a haven for school-age children and youth (Durlak & Weissberg, 2007). The literature notes mixed opinions concerning the impact of extended learning time in the form of after-school programs. Interested stakeholders believe that, despite the inconsistent findings of the effect of after-school programs on academics and student behavior, after-school programs can narrow the achievement gap through academic and social support, promote physical fitness, and offer refuge for children and youth. Researchers believe that these varied results may stem from the need for improved research designs and a determination of which children benefit the most from participation in after-school programs (Riggs & Greenberg, 2004). This study addressed the need for extended learning time in the form of after-school programs in urban schools. It sought to evaluate the effect of participation in school-based after-school programs on the academic and social behaviors of elementary and middle school students in an urban school district. It used an ex-post facto research design and included after-school participation, Ohio Achievement Assessment data in reading and mathematics, suspensions, school attendance and demographics including race, gender, age, disability, and English proficiency as variables. Participants included students in grades three through eight from two schools in an urban district. The researcher analyzed data to compare participants in an after-school program to non-participants according to the variables mentioned above. The results of this study showed that after-school programs academically and socially benefit urban elementary and middle school students.

It is generally agreed upon that high quality programs benefit academic, behavior, and socio-emotional outcomes. However, research has been less clear on the interaction between levels of attendance in the program and such outcomes. The current study used data from southeastern after school programs to evaluate the effects of attendance on academic outcomes and teacher ratings on fourth grade students. The study found the high attendance group only differed from the low attendance group on teacher ratings of improvement in academic performance and improvement in getting along well with others. The results are compared to prior literature and implications for practice and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Since the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, students who failed to demonstrate proficiency on state assessments were identified and targeted in order to receive interventions to assist in increasing their academic achievement. For many students, time during the regular school day simply could not be provided for the attention or time on-task necessary to meet their needs. As a result, many school districts and schools implemented after-school and tutoring programs to target those students who failed to demonstrate proficiency. Louisville Municipal School District (LMSD) operated an after-school program to help increase the academic achievement of 5th through 8th grade students in reading/language and mathematics on the MCT2. The purpose of this study was to (a) explore the impact the after-school program's strategic components (leadership, activities, and partnerships) had on student achievement, and (b) determine if the after-school program had a positive effect on academic outcomes in the areas of reading/language and mathematics. A mixed method research design was used to conduct the study. A narrative approach was used to provide a response to the first research question. The Chi-squared test of independence was used as the primary means of analysis for the second and third research questions to determine if relationship existed between participation in the after-school program and academic achievement. The results from the research study show that strategic components of an after-school program had a positive impact on student achievement. Emerging themes were identified for each strategic component: leadership, activities, and partnerships. Participation in the after-school program proved to be a good predictor of student achievement on MCT2, with statistically significant Chi-squared results for reading/language. The recommendations for future research are as follows: (a) further research to improve reading/language and mathematics skills among the nation's students, (b) longitudinal studies to determine long term effects on students attending after-school programs multiple years, (c) study of effects of after-school programs on other grade levels, and (d) including outcomes of other variables such as after-school participation on school attendance, behavior, and classroom grades.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of after school learning centers in a rural school district in South Carolina on Measures of Academic Progress achievement scores for low achieving African American elementary students. The researcher collected and analyzed Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test data administered in the Spring of 2008 from the state database and identified 419 African American low achieving fourth and fifth grade students for the study. The Educational Accountability Act of South Carolina requires that schools develop individual academic plans and provide remediation for students in grades three through eight who score Below Basic on the state mandated test. After school programs are one avenue by which these needs are being met. Students were categorized into three groups: students attending after school programs with an academic focus; students attending after school programs with academics plus a recreational component; and students not participating in an after school program. Grade percentile ranking scores were collected from the local school database for Cognitive Abilities Test Composite score and Measures of Academic Progress Reading and Math Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 test administration. Students' names were used only during the database query and sorting process. After sorting, names were removed and replaced with random identification numbers to protect student anonymity. The results showed that the cognitive abilities scores were significantly related to the Measures of Academic Progress Reading scores but after controlling for cognitive abilities there were no significant differences among the three student groupings found in the reading achievement. There were significant differences among the three student groupings found on the math achievement; however, the cognitive abilities scores were not significantly related to the Measures of Academic Progress Math scores. Implications include a need for examining the after school programs to determine what changes could be made in the reading program to make a positive impact on student achievement. Additionally, more research and data collection could help school administrators be better informed of their after school programs and assist in better serving children in their schools.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the Wake County Super Opportunities with After-School Resources (SOAR) after-school program to determine its effectiveness concerning students' academic success. One thousand two hundred and four SOAR participants, including those students who were asked to attend, but did not, and 18,407 Wake County students who had not attended SOAR participated in the study using their End of Course (EOC) actual and expected scores. It was hypothesized that: (1) students involved with the SOAR after-school program would perform significantly better than students not involved with the program; (2) greater attendance in the SOAR after-school program would produce significant gains in academic achievement; (3) African American students involved in the SOAR program would perform significantly better than African American students in the same school district (Wake County) not involved in SOAR; and (4) African Americans students involved in the SOAR program would perform significantly better than European Americans students in the same school district (Wake County) not involved in SOAR. All hypotheses were supported. Participants in the SOAR program significantly outperformed students not involved in the program or attended once; students who attended ten or more times in the SOAR program significantly outperformed students who attended less than ten times. African Americans in the SOAR program who attended ten or more times, significantly outperformed European Americans in the SOAR program who attended ten or more times and African Americans and European Americans in Wake County not involved in SOAR. African Americans in SOAR did not outperform European Americans participating in SOAR when the entire sample was analyzed. This suggests that the group affect was greater for African Americans. The research findings answer the question, "Does school attendance relate to student achievement as perceived on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test scores?" The research was conducting by doing a correlation analysis on the students' school attendance percentage for the 2012-2013 school year and their 2013 Communication Arts MAP test scores and their 2013 Math MAP test scores. The results of this study show that there is a positive relationship between school attendance percentages and student achievement based on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test. The conclusion based on this research is that school attendance has a significant effect on student achievement. Therefore, school districts should further educate their parents and community on the importance of regular attendance. There should also be a better form of tracking chronically absent students and providing support of them."
