Book The Economic Impact of Apec Trade Liberalisation

Download or read book The Economic Impact of Apec Trade Liberalisation written by Rina Oktaviani and published by . This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an integrated world market, changing global and regional trade policies can affect the economic performance of individual countries. The impacts of trade liberalisation by APEC member countries on the Indonesian macroeconomy, and its various sectors, especially the agricultural industries, are assessed and analysed in this book. An Indonesian Forecasting Model is developed based on the ORANI-F general equilibrium model for Australia in line with The Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model to estimate the impacts of APEC trade liberalisation on changes in global market conditions. APEC trade liberalisation is found to be generally beneficial in enhancing growth in most APEC members in the short run and even more so in the long run, except for North America. In addition, the pattern of winners and losers from trade liberalisation at the sectoral level varies across scenarios. Indonesia s comparative advantage under trade liberalisation will lie more in agricultural production than in agricultural processing.

Book excerpt: In the mid-1990s a joint research project was established between CASER (Bogor), CIES (Adelaide), CSIS ( Jakarta) and RSPAS (at ANU, Canberra) to examine interactions between agriculture, trade and the environment in Indonesia. Funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR Project No. 9449), the specific objective of the project was to assess the production, consumption, trade, income distributional, regional, environmental, and welfare eff ects in Indonesia of structural and policy changes at home and abroad. Particular attention was to be paid to those structural and policy changes that could aff ect Indonesia's agricultural sector over the next 5-10 years. The implications of national and global economic growth, of regional and multilateral trade liberalisation initiatives, and of Indonesia's ongoing unilateral policy reforms were the initial focus of the study. However, with the onslaught of the financial crisis that began in the latter part of 1997, the project leaders added that issue to the research agenda. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling two-volume collection presents the major literary contributions to the economic analysis of the consequences of trade liberalization on growth, productivity, labor market outcomes and economic inequality. Examining the classical theories that stress gains from trade stemming from comparative advantage, the selection also comprises more recent theories of imperfect competition, where any potential gains from trade can stem from competitive effects or the international transmission of knowledge. Empirical contributions provide evidence regarding the explanatory power of these various theories, including work on the effects of trade openness on economic growth, wages, and income inequality, as well as evidence on the effects of trade on firm productivity, entry and exit. Prefaced by an original introduction from the editor, the collection will to be an invaluable research resource for academics, practitioners and those drawn to this fascinating topic.
