Book Supporting Early Career Teachers With Research Based Practices

Download or read book Supporting Early Career Teachers With Research Based Practices written by Wellner, Laurie and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers in their first few years of their teaching career require high quality, structured support to begin the journey towards becoming experts. Establishing research-based best practices and working habits set up early career teachers for a fulfilling and successful career. The requirements of teachers are constantly changing, and teachers need to continually adapt their knowledge and practices to fit schools’ changing demographics. Having a toolbox of research-based best practices to draw upon can support early career teachers as they move from theory to practical application when the learning curve is the steepest. Strengthening the system of support includes increasing teachers’ influence over their day-to-day work and developing positive and supportive cultures of learning. Supporting Early Career Teachers With Research-Based Practices presents both theoretical and practical research to support the conceptual understanding of educational praxis for common areas with which early career educators may require additional expertise or support. This book is intended to be a valuable contribution to the body of literature in the field of education by supplying research-based teaching practices for modern education. Primary topics covered include professional learning, classroom management, student-teacher relationships, teaching diverse students and inclusive educational practices, and teacher self-care strategies. This book is a valuable reference tool for early career teachers of all subject areas and grade levels, school administrators, teacher mentors and guides, education faculty in higher education, educational researchers, curriculum developers, instructional facilitators, practicing teachers, pre-service teachers, professional development coordinators, teacher educators, researchers, academicians, and students interested in teaching practices and support for the early career teacher.

Download or read book The Forgotten Room written by Mary Hollowell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in a rapidly-growing county in the southeastern United States, Peachtree Alternative School is a dumping ground for chronically disruptive students that regular teachers can no longer handle. The school has some of the toughest kids that society has to offer: kids who have dealt drugs, attempted rape, brought weapons to school, and made terrorist threats. Neglect, understaffing, and overcrowding create a volatile situation; Teachers survive threats, assaults, brawls, and rampages with their therapeutic philosophies barely intact. The Forgotten Room is a teacher survival story. It examines the darker side of American education through chronicling the course of Peachtree Alternative School's tenth and final year. It offers a glimmer of hope in the safe zones created by hardworking teachers, but it is also a cautionary tale about the consequences of bureaucrats neglecting troubled teens. Hollowell's multidisciplinary book provides a rare look at public alternative schooling in America. This gritty and compelling ethnography is part of a growing movement in academia to make ethnographic studies more accessible. It exposes punitive school policy, demonstrates the prison-industrial complex, and reveals school board corruption. In addition, it pinpoints quality teaching of chronically disruptive youth. As ethnographic nonfiction, The Forgotten Room breaks down the walls between social science and literature.

Book Alternative Educational Programmes Schools and Social Justice

Download or read book Alternative Educational Programmes Schools and Social Justice written by Glenda McGregor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative education caters and cares for students whose regular schools have failed and excluded them. Fifty years of international research reports that alternative settings are characterised by close and powerful staff–student relationships, a curriculum which is relevant, engaging and meaningful, and the strong sense of agency afforded young people by the opportunity to make decisions. Together, these three practices produce increased life chances for alternative education participants. However, despite these apparent successes, alternative education seems to have had little impact on mainstream schools. This collection of papers addresses the important question – what might regular schools and teachers learn about socially just pedagogies from alternative education practices? In providing answers to this question, authors interrogate the taken-for-granted wisdom about alternative education while also taking account of ongoing policy shifts, differing locations and populations, and persistent and intersecting patterns of raced, classed and gendered inequalities. They draw on a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to interrogate the ways in which alternative schools and alternative education both challenge and legitimate the kinds of schooling most of us expect for our own and other people's children. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies in Education.

Unfortunately, the number of resource books addressing alternative education has not paralleled program growth. Filling a major gap in the literature, Chalker and Brown provide concrete solutions to challenging problems associated with the planning, development, and implementation of alternative education programs for K-8 students. They break the book into equal parts, treating, respectively, K-5, 6-8 and combined K-8 efforts at prevention and early intervention before students reach high school. Public school administrators and alternative program educators will find this book useful and educational professionals at the national and state level will appreciate the activities aimed at school improvement initiatives.

Book The Impact of a Well being Curriculum on Students Enrolled in a Behavioral Alternative Education School

Download or read book The Impact of a Well being Curriculum on Students Enrolled in a Behavioral Alternative Education School written by Mark S. Butler (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore the impact that a well-being curriculum has on students enrolled in a behavioral alternative education school. According to Martin Seligman’s theory that well-being can be taught in schools, the researcher evaluated the practices associated with an alternative school’s well-being curriculum to determine if the teaching of such a curriculum is beneficial to students in the alternative education school. This study employed a case study research design. In using case study, a study was conducted at one alternative school intensely by an analysis of pre and post data pertaining to the students enrolled in the alternative school as well as gathering and analyzing data from two sets of interviews. From this information, insights were revealed that further explained the impact of a well-being curriculum on students enrolled in an alternative school and its benefits or lack of benefits to the students. The research indicates the well-being curriculum that is implemented in a behavioral alternative education setting is impactful to the students enrolled in a positive manner. The enrolled students’ grades and attendance rates increased than the previous year. The students also made improvements by decreasing their referral and suspension rates than the previous year as well. The well-being curriculum has helped the students to achieve both academic and social success while being enrolled in the alternative school. The well-being curriculum has strengthened the relationships that the students share with their staff and principal as well as with their peers. The students have also acquired the ability to transfer the well-being curriculum components and skills learned into their homes lives as well as in their community. All in all, the well-being curriculum has been a success in the behavioral alternative education school. Implications of these findings related to practice, research, leadership, learning, and service were discussed.
