Book excerpt: This study aimed to analyze the impact a social-emotional learning program had on middle school behavior and stakeholder perception. An SEL program was implemented at a middle school as an intervention program to strengthen self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship-building. SEL programs provide coping strategies to all students, especially those that have experienced trauma. The participants in this study were sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students from an inner-city middle school in Tennessee. The participants completed a pretest before implementing Second Step's social-emotional learning program. The treatment school implemented the SEL program weekly for ten weeks. The researcher compared the pretest and posttest scores using the Tennessee State Climate Survey for students and staff to analyze the results.

Book excerpt: Social and Emotional Learning in Action(SELA) is an easy to use sourcebook facilitated by teaching and/or counseling practitioners primarily in school settings. The pedagogical basis for these lessons are shaped around the research findings of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), indicating that the inclusion of social and emotional development programs positively affect academic achievement. CASEL has identified five interrelated cognitive, affective, and behavioral competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. SELA will be address all five. SELA will provide a developmentally sequenced year-long/ modular flow or stand-alone lessons that integrate the benefits of experiential and social emotional learning (SEL) into the classroom. Each lesson (36 total) will offer step-by-step instructions along with a materials list.

First, we explore the definition of SEL, pointing out how it has evolved as our world has changed. We review key SEL domains and skills and describe universal school-based SEL programming as one approach to fostering students’ SEL competencies. We highlight the ongoing need for evidence-based middle school SEL programs by demonstrating how few programs meet the rigorous What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and Blueprints standards for evidence. We extend our summary of these programs by noting that even when positive effects have been demonstrated, these effects were often observed in a single domain, such as substance use, or outnumbered by null effects, which undermines efforts to understand program effectiveness. We conclude by considering the unique developmental needs of early adolescents and providing recommendations for the development or refinement of SEL programs that target middle school students

Book excerpt: Millions of youth are at risk for low academic achievement, school dropout, risky behavior, bullying, and mental health concerns, especially those living in rural areas. Protective factors can reduce the likelihood of children and adolescents experiencing these negative outcomes. Research shows that positive school climate is a powerful protective factor for youth. The present study investigated the longitudinal relations between middle school students' school climate perceptions and their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development over two years. Specifically, 510 students in grades 5-9 from six rural schools rated their support and influence at school as well as their internalizing problems, personal adjustment, and risky behavior. Students' academic performance was progress monitored using reading and math curriculum-based measures. Data were examined using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Results revealed significant relations between students' perceived school climate and their social-emotional, behavioral, and mathematics outcomes over time. Further, school climate was a predictor of students' future involvement in risky behavior. There was a slight negative trend in students' perceived school climate as well as increases in their social-emotional problems and risky behavior, which suggests the need to implement evidence-based school climate improvement strategies aligned to students' developmental levels. Findings indicate the importance of incorporating school climate assessment and improvement strategies in school practices and policies to enhance student outcomes and school contexts. Limitations and future directions for research are discussed based on results from the present study and the school climate literature. Overall, school climate significantly influences outcomes for youth.

Book excerpt: Current research has shown that social and emotional learning (SEL) programs improve the school climate, school culture, and the overall academic success of students. It is imperative that administrators collaborate with their staff to find effective programs that address the needs of every student; this includes both their academic needs, as well as their social and emotional needs. This research study examined teacher and administrative insights of social and emotional learning, and the impact of such a program in today's schools. The questions guiding this research study were: How would a social and emotional learning program, when implemented with fidelity, affect students who qualify for special education services under emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD)? and What are the effects of a placement in a self-contained classroom on students with emotional and behavioral disorders? A mixed methods approach using a survey and semi-structured interviews relating to SEL allowed the researcher to gather data on staff perceptions about SEL programs, and the effectiveness of such a program on the success of all students. The data also allowed the researcher to examine the educational setting of students with EBD, and what these students need be successful. The researcher found that, while teachers believe social and emotional learning is vital to student success, implementation with fidelity does not occur at the site in which the study took place. This inconsistency in teaching social and emotional skills can drastically impede the effectiveness of such a program, and a recommendation would be to implement a social and emotional learning program with the understanding that the entire school site must implement with fidelity. The information gathered in this study will add to current research on the topic of social and emotional learning.
