Book excerpt: Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) has the potential to positively impact secondary students with Emotional Disturbance who exhibit internalizing characteristics such as anxiety and depression. This project examines the current literature related to Emotional Disturbance (ED) including successful programs as well as the implications for needed support. Recent data collected by the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) from the 2018-2019 school year under Section 618 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) showed that only 5.45% of student with disabilities in the United States were identified with Emotional Disturbance (ED), making this a highly specialized population within the special education umbrella (NCES, 2021). SEL principals focus on building healthy identities, managing emotions, achieving goals, maintaining supportive relationships, and responsible decision-making. The significance and purpose of this project is to potentially change the way students with ED are taught, provide teachers with ways to implement more effective programs and/or curriculum, and give all educators the tools they need to improve the overall mental health and satisfaction of all students.

Book excerpt: Current research has shown that social and emotional learning (SEL) programs improve the school climate, school culture, and the overall academic success of students. It is imperative that administrators collaborate with their staff to find effective programs that address the needs of every student; this includes both their academic needs, as well as their social and emotional needs. This research study examined teacher and administrative insights of social and emotional learning, and the impact of such a program in today's schools. The questions guiding this research study were: How would a social and emotional learning program, when implemented with fidelity, affect students who qualify for special education services under emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD)? and What are the effects of a placement in a self-contained classroom on students with emotional and behavioral disorders? A mixed methods approach using a survey and semi-structured interviews relating to SEL allowed the researcher to gather data on staff perceptions about SEL programs, and the effectiveness of such a program on the success of all students. The data also allowed the researcher to examine the educational setting of students with EBD, and what these students need be successful. The researcher found that, while teachers believe social and emotional learning is vital to student success, implementation with fidelity does not occur at the site in which the study took place. This inconsistency in teaching social and emotional skills can drastically impede the effectiveness of such a program, and a recommendation would be to implement a social and emotional learning program with the understanding that the entire school site must implement with fidelity. The information gathered in this study will add to current research on the topic of social and emotional learning. It discusses life skills as they are implemented in schools and non-formal education, providing both qualitative and quantitative evidence of when, with whom, and how life skills do or do not impact young women’s and men’s lives in various contexts. Specifically, it examines the nature and importance of life skills, and how they are taught. It looks at the synergies and differences between life skills educational programmes and the way in which they promote social and emotional learning, vocational/employment education, and health and sexuality education. Finally, it explores how life skills may be better incorporated into education and how such education can address structures and relations of power to help youth achieve desired future outcomes, and goals set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Life skills education has gained considerable attention by education policymakers, researchers and educators as being the sine qua non for later achievements in life. It is nearly ubiquitous in global and national education policies, including the SDGs, because life skills are regarded as essential for a diverse set of purposes: reducing poverty, achieving gender equality, promoting economic growth, addressing climate change, fostering peace and global citizenship, and creating sustainable and healthy communities. Yet, to achieve these broad goals, questions persist as to which life skills are important, who needs to learn them, how they can be taught, and how they are best measured. Book excerpt: Students with learning disabilities who spend the majority of the school day in a general education classroom often struggle to appropriately deal with feelings of frustration and anxiety. There is currently a gap in understanding how special education teachers can support the social and emotional inclusion of students with learning disabilities when they are in the general education classroom. The purpose of this study is to explore the results of implementing a social-emotional curriculum both in a pullout setting and in the general education setting and examine the effect of the program on the behavior of students with learning disabilities in the general education classroom. This research expands on the ongoing dialog in the literature concerning the effects of explicit and targeted social-emotional instruction. Students with disabilities were included in the data collection in order to better understand how students perceive the effects of the curriculum. This is a qualitative study that consisted of interviews with ten students who qualify for special education services under the eligibility of Specific Learning Disability. Three teachers with participating students were also interviewed. Data showed that a social-emotional instructional program positively impacts both students with learning disabilities and the classroom as a whole by helping students increase their coping skills, which thereby helps reduce the instances of these students being upset at school and minimizes their reaction to academic and social struggles.
