Book The Impact of a Rural School based Health Center on Students and Their Families in Sneedville Tennessee

Download or read book The Impact of a Rural School based Health Center on Students and Their Families in Sneedville Tennessee written by Michael D. Belcher and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the impact that the school-based health center in Sneedville, Tennessee had on students who attended Hancock County High School. The study documented how the school-based health center affected students, families, and the community of Sneedville. Case study methodology was used to determine if the school-based health center impacted school attendance, mental and emotional health, sexual practices, and overall quality of life for students and their families. Data were collected through 25 interviews with health center stakeholders. The methodology included working with the staff at the school-based health center to identify the key players and key center users over the seven years of the center's existence. An interview protocol was designed for each of the seven groups that were interviewed. Data were collected from current and former students, parents of current and former students, school counselors, teachers, and the school nurse. Students who attended Hancock County High School as well as their parents were impacted by their direct access to primary comprehensive health care services. Benefits to parents included a reduction of time in missed work and lower medical care costs for students without health insurance. The center promoted and improved school attendance while distributing valuable health education information to students and parents. Because the city of Sneedville has only one medical center and no hospital, the school-based health center served the rural residents well. Beginning as one of only three such centers in the United States, the school-based health center endured and evolved into a full-service, comprehensive health care provider. The center is located in an isolated region of Northeast Tennessee; the location added to the center's impact on the residents. This study could provide a model for rural communities seeking ways to serve the health care needs of youth. In this time of economic instability and educational accountability, this school-based health center appeared to impact student care, thus allowing students to be more capable and ready to learn.

Download or read book 21st Century Community Learning Center Program A Study to Evaluate the Success of a Program in a Rural County in East Tennessee written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st Century Community Learning Center Program is a key component in the No Child Left Behind Act. It presents an opportunity for students and their families to continue to learn new skills after the regular school day has ended. The focus of the program is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children attending low performing schools. Tutorial services and academic activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math. In addition, programs provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music, and recreational programs. The purpose of this study was to analyze the components of a rural 21st Century Community Learning Center program located in Tazewell, Tennessee, and to determine the impact of the center on the education and welfare of the students and their families who live in this rural town and attend the three Claiborne County schools involved in the grant program. The study focused on the extent to which Claiborne Countys 21st Century Community Learning Center Program was successful in implementing the criteria set forth by the U.S. Department of Education concerning the eight components necessary to be an effective after-school program. The findings from the study indicated that these eight components were being implemented; 3 however, there were also areas of need that should be monitored closely to ensure that the program continues to progress towards becoming an exemplary after-school program.

Book The Experiences of School Administrators Teachers Parents and Health Professionals Regarding the Benefits and Challenges of a Rural School based Health Center

Download or read book The Experiences of School Administrators Teachers Parents and Health Professionals Regarding the Benefits and Challenges of a Rural School based Health Center written by Ken McMullum and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the deadly EF-4 tornado devastated the Winston County in 2014, the local hospital and various doctors’ offices and clinics were destroyed. Win School District (WSD) had already realized the need to reestablish health care services within the school, and now county health professionals realized they were unable to meet the health care needs of the county. A partnership emerged with the Winston County Health Foundation and established a School-Based Health Clinic (SBHC) on the lower elementary school campus. The purpose of this research study was to investigate the lived experiences of school administrators, teachers, parents, and health professionals related to the SBHC in a rural school district. An exploratory qualitative research design was selected for the study to answer the central, overarching research question: How do teachers, parents, health professionals, and administrators describe their experiences related to an SBHC in a rural school district? Overall, as experienced by school administrators, teachers, parents, and health professionals, and evidenced by official school records, the SBCH met a tremendous health need in the community and had a positive impact on students’ academic achievement, students’ attendance, and teachers’ attendance. This study focused on the benefits and advantages, disadvantages and challenges, impact on student and teacher attendance, impact on student achievement, and suggested improvements. Lessons learned and insights are provided for educational leaders that can be used to promote and implement SBHC programs in Mississippi as well as throughout the country.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor academic outcomes and high dropout rates are major concerns of educators, policy makers, and parents alike--and poor health severely limits a child's motivation and ability to learn. Recent research confirms that "health disparities affect educational achievement". Improving students' health is integral to education reform. "School-Based Health Centers" ("SBHCs")--the convergence of public health, primary care, and mental health--provide an optimal setting to "foster learning readiness and academic achievement" while giving children the resources they need to improve their health.

Book excerpt: Maintaining student health, safety, and welfare is a primary goal for any K-12 school system. If a child becomes sick, is injured, or seems in any other way incapacitated at school, it is the understood responsibility that the school will provide care and, if necessary, contact the parents and direct the child to outside treatment. Beyond that basic level of care, over the past 50 years has grown a larger commitment addressing professional care for students as they grow, including dental, visual, dietary, hormonal, and mental health--especially for disadvantaged children, in both urban and rural communities. Some school districts also extend care, at various levels, to student-age children not at that school or in school at all, people who work at the school, the family of students, and the general community. This paper addresses the key elements for designing school health centers, the emergence of school-based health clinics and the minimum requirements these facilities should have, and the basic principles to remember when designing school health centers. The paper's focus concerns the nurse's office and the school-based health clinic. Additionally highlighted are the types of school health centers and their importance. Book The Relationship Between School based Health Center Utilization School Connectedness and Academic Outcomes

Download or read book The Relationship Between School based Health Center Utilization School Connectedness and Academic Outcomes written by Kelly Whitaker and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School-based health centers (SBHCs) have gained popularity as an approach to provide adolescents with access to health and mental health services in a convenient, youth friendly environment. Although evidence exists regarding SBHC's impact on access and health domains, clarification of the relationship between SBHC utilization and academic outcomes is needed. Yet, understanding the relationship between utilization of SBHCs and educational outcomes is fraught with many challenges. Although various studies attempt to singularly address these challenges, this study fully integrates these important prior insights into a single study. First, this study capitalizes upon a unique opportunity link three secondary data sources (administrative service utilization, education outcome data, and student survey data), which allows for analysis of the type of services used (medical services, general counseling, and behavioral health counseling) and dosage of each service used. Second, this study limits the impact school contextual differences by limiting the study population to one school, further enabling clarification of the general approach of the intervention. Third, this study employs propensity scoring methods to carefully control for differences between SBHC users and non-users. Specifically, this study aims to (1) clarify student level SBHC utilization patterns; (2) replicate prior research on school connection pathways (i.e. student perceptions of teacher support (school support) and student perceptions of their belonging to school (school connectedness), adding new analysis on specific types and dosages of SBHC use; and (3) replicate prior research linking SBHC utilization to academic outcomes, adding new analysis on specific types and dosages of SBHC use. Results indicate that students who use SBHC services have heterogeneous demographic characteristics and health and mental health needs compared to students who do not use SBHCs. This study did not find a relationship between SBHC service use and connection to school or education outcomes at the end of one school year. This study may serve as model for how we might approach future SBHC research.

Download or read book The Politics of Youth Sex and Health Care in American Schools written by Marvin D Feit and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine school-based health clinics and the political considerations and strategies that can help them succeed! The Politics of Youth, Sex, and Health Care in American Schools reveals the history and political dynamics involved in building and sustaining an important innovation in the way health care services are delivered to America’s youth: the school-based health clinic. These clinics provide vital health services--including crucial yet controversial reproductive services--to youth. In addition to analyzing the nature and extent of the political barriers facing school-based clinics, this vital book describes the strategies that have proven most effective in overcoming them. This essential book begins with an overview of the existing literature on the history and provision of health care for youth. Then it presents the results of a study that utilized a two-pronged approach: a nationwide survey of clinic administrators (supplemented with aggregate data) and intensive case studies of five representative locales. By combining the quantitative data from the national survey with the more qualitative information gleaned from the case study field work, The Politics of Youth, Sex, and Health Care in American Schools can deliver broad yet accurate generalizations as well as detailed interpretation of the authors’findings. This informative and insightful volume explores: the ways that school-based health clinics (SBHCs) have evolved, confronted opposition, and grown day-to-day issues that SBHCs face, including inadequate funding, lack of parental involvement, unsupportive teachers and schools, staffing/training issues, cultural issues, and more sources of opposition to SBHCs, including fundamentalist Protestants, Black Evangelicals, Catholics, and conservative parent groups ways to establish successful school health care reforms issues and recommendations for SBHCs in the future To date, there have been very few empirical studies of the politics of school health or of the provision of sexuality-related health services for youth. The greatest depth and breadth of information you can find on the subject is here, in The Politics of Youth, Sex, and Health Care in American Schools.
