Book excerpt: The responsibility for college success has historically rested with the student, but since the 1980s, educators have taken increasing ownership of this, designing structures that increase the likelihood of learning, success, and retention. These efforts have included a variety of initiatives--first year seminars, learning communities, writing-intensive courses, common intellectual experiences, service-learning, undergraduate research, and senior capstones among others--that have come to be known as high-impact practices. Although first year seminars have been widely accepted as a high impact educational practice leading to improved academic performance, increased retention and acquisition of critical 21st Century outcomes, first-year seminars tend to be loosely defined in the literature. National explorations of course structure and administration demonstrate the diversity of the curricular initiatives across various campuses. In order to determine the attributes that all of these varied courses share in common that contribute to their effectiveness, the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina invited contributions for a book exploring effective educational practices within the first-year seminar. This collection of case studies represents a wide variety of institutional and seminar types. The authors describe the structure, pedagogy, and assessment strategies that lead to high quality seminars and they offer abundant models for ensuring the delivery of a high-quality educational experience to all entering students. Book excerpt: This study explores the impact of social integration on freshmen intent to return to their current institution. With reference to Weber's work on bureaucracy and Baumeister's work on social inclusion, the relevance of the Tinto model of retention is investigated within the context of an HBCU. Findings support the idea that students at the HBCU engage in more formal than informal social interaction, and to some degree revealed that level of social interaction was related to level of satisfaction with university experience. However, results indicated that level of satisfaction was related to only one of the two dependent measures. Nevertheless, some support for the usefulness of the Tinto model was found, yet the study also revealed that there are factors peculiar to the African American student community that need to be identified and researched in further depth if we are to have a comprehensive model, with predictive value that can help researchers, educators and administrators understand the nuances of the African American student and why they stay or drop out of university. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a first-year experience program on the retention of underrepresented minority students at an urban private predominately White institution. The study addressed the following research question: How do students articulate the value of their first-year experience program in helping them persist from freshman to sophomore year? The researcher conducted an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) through three semi-structured interviews with four self-identified underrepresented minority undergraduate students to examine their perceptions of how the program influenced their retention from freshman to sophomore year. In the final analysis, each interviewee felt that the first-year experience program could contribute to their ability to be retained until their sophomore year. The study also concluded that peer mentoring has a positive effect on social integration, retention, and student satisfaction with the university for first-year unrepresented minority students. Therefore, this study recommends that the Student Success Program change its mentorship model from a cascade to a peer mentorship model to improve retention and social integration for underrepresented minority students in their first year.
