This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:This study examines the reflections of preservice teachers in relation to their experiential knowledge gained through active learning of African American culture and their perceptions and beliefs concerning the home life of these students and their lives in the community. This action research study presents the results of a qualitative analysis of the on-line journal postings and class discussions of sixteen preservice teachers after a cultural experience designed to increase their knowledge of the attributes of African American culture. The research is designed to address the following question: How will participation in this community experience (visiting a community church) impact preservice teachers' knowledge of African American culture and their ideas about how to build on children's culture in the classroom? Findings reveal six lessons learned and four implications for culturally responsive teaching. This study shows how the experience enhanced their conceptual and practical knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy. Implications for teacher educators are addressed.

Book Creating Culturally Competent Teachers in Higher Education

Download or read book Creating Culturally Competent Teachers in Higher Education written by Pavan John Antony and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-14 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents evidence of a longitudinal study in teacher preparation utilizing a threefold multicultural (TFM) model of immersion. It establishes the need for culturally responsive teachers in classrooms, and outlines a proven model that can be employed to prepare them. Through the TFM model elements, pre-service teacher candidates participated in class-based, cohort fieldwork experience, and reflective journal writings and discussions. Evidence was gathered from pre- and post-questionnaires, interviews, classroom discussions, and journal writings, along with the inclusion of student voices. Pre-service teacher attitudes, beliefs, and degree of cultural responsiveness changed post-study, and candidates became more effective in the classroom, highlighting the effectiveness of the TFM model. This book is an invaluable resource for universities, under- and postgraduate students, and teachers across the globe as it provides a teacher preparation fieldwork model that helps to prepare culturally responsive teachers for children in any classroom.

Book More Than Just Awareness

Download or read book More Than Just Awareness written by Jennifer A. Pluretti and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The increasing racial, ethnic and linguistic diversity of pre-school to high school (P-12) students in the United States is well-documented, as is the fact that classroom teachers are predominately White and speak a dialect close to Standard English. Teacher education programs must prepare teachers who can relate to, and respect, P-12 students of color, ensure students are academically successful, and help students maintain their cultural identity. The purpose of this qualitative study, using a multiple case study research design (Stake, 1995; Yin, 2012, 2014) was to explore how pre-service teachers’ burgeoning understanding of cultural competence (Ladson-Billings, 1995) was impacted by learning about the cultures of elementary students. Five undergraduate Inclusive Childhood Education majors participated in the study. They each selected an elementary student in their separate field placement classrooms about whose culture they learned. They communicated about their learning through one focus group, responding to three questions I posed on a Blackboard (private course management) site, and responding to each of their peers’ posts, participating in individual interviews and completing an exit survey sent via email. I kept a researcher’s journal as well, which became another piece of data. Data analysis included coding toward thematic analysis aimed at examining pre-service teachers’ learning about the elementary students’ cultures and the pre-service teachers’ developing understanding of cultural competence. The study’s over-arching theme of more than just awareness, supported by the three emerging themes: building relationships, acknowledging familial impact, and teacher actions, are the access points for which pre-service teachers may begin to build an understanding of culture and cultural competence." -- leaf iv.

Book Moving Teacher Education into Urban Schools and Communities

Download or read book Moving Teacher Education into Urban Schools and Communities written by Jana Noel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2013 American Educational Studies Association's Critics Choice Award! When teacher education is located on a university campus, set apart from urban schools and communities, it is easy to overlook the realities and challenges communities face as they struggle toward social, economic, cultural, and racial justice. This book describes how teacher education can become a meaningful part of this work, by re-positioning programs directly into urban schools and communities. Situating their work within the theoretical framework of prioritizing community strengths, each set of authors provides a detailed and nuanced description of a teacher education program re-positioned within an urban school or community. Authors describe the process of developing such a relationship, how the university, school, and community became integrated partners in the program, and the impact on participants. As university-based teacher education has come under increased scrutiny for lack of "real world" relevance, this book showcases programs that have successfully navigated the travails of shifting their base directly into urban schools and communities, with evidence of positive outcomes for all involved.

Book Cultural Competence in America s Schools

Download or read book Cultural Competence in America s Schools written by Bruce Anthony Jones and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Competence in America’s Schools: Leadership, Engagement and Understanding focuses on explicating the impact of culture and issues of race and ethnicity on student learning, teacher and leadership efficacy, and educational policy making in our nation’s public school system. The authors agree with Levin (2012), who pointed out that the challenge of dealing effectively with racial and ethnic diversity in education in traditionally homogeneous societies is a global problem. One indicator of this point is revealed in a U.S. study that was commissioned by the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality, which reported on the serious consequences for student achievement and teacher effectiveness in the face of “the gap between teacher training and the realities of the classroom when it comes to teaching diverse populations and students with special needs.” (Public Agenda, 2008, p. 2).

Book Developing Intercultural Sensitivity Through Immersion Experiences in Unfamiliar Cultural Milieux

Download or read book Developing Intercultural Sensitivity Through Immersion Experiences in Unfamiliar Cultural Milieux written by Mary Kay Florence Pieski and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators play an important part in preparing students to understand and interact within a culturally diverse and interconnected world. Educators by their very profession are leaders. The word "educate" is derived from the Latin verb educare, meaning to lead out. Educators are responsible for the intellectual, moral and social instruction of their students. Culturally appropriate knowledge, behavior, and attitudes must be developed in both the educator and student of the 21st century. Despite this need to be more internationally minded, developing intercultural competence in pre-service educators is marginal at best. Developing intercultural competence is a life long journey. Accomplishing such growth means developing behavior, cognitive and affective skills which an enable an individual to interact effectively and appropriately with culturally diverse individuals or groups. Cultural immersion experience is one way for pre-service educators to develop intercultural competence. The theoretical basis for this study is the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS; Bennett, 1986, 1993). This study explored the development of intercultural competence of six pre-service educators through immersion experiences in unfamiliar milieux. This mixed methods study used data from the Intercultural Development Inventory, (Hammer & Bennett, 2007, 2009), a measure of intercultural sensitivity grounded in the DMIS, as a pretest, post-test and post-post test, application form, pre- and post experience questionnaires, interviews and journals to ascertain development. Findings from this study demonstrate that pre-serviced educators can benefit from developmentally effective immersion experiences. Several participants experienced a small gain in intercultural sensitivity as measured by the IDI after a regression upon re-entry. Intensive appropriate sequenced intercultural preparation prior, during, and after the immersion experience could enhance the impact of the experience on the intercultural competence development as measured by the IDI.
