Book Race Across the Great Divide

Download or read book Race Across the Great Divide written by Darryl Flack and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-08 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1970s was the high-water mark for motorcycling in Australia. The Japanese motorcycle boom rippled around the nation attracting a new wave of enthusiasts to the sport. Women rode step-thrus, thousands of kids were zipping around on minibikes, and suburban bushlands were filled with burbling trailbikes. Wheel-standing Japanese superbikes were menacing the streets, and race grids were bursting with a sea of new riders eager to try their hand on the race circuits of Australia. Blessed with a great climate, Australia was the only country in the world to stage racing all-year round. But instead of top racers emerging from the big cities, the new wave of Aussie talent would come from the bush. Wollongong's Wayne Gardner was Australia's first world 500cc champion. His firebrand spirit was forged as a young teenager racing his mates on minibikes in the creek beds of Balgownie. Ten years later Gardner would make his world 500cc GP debut and four years after that he would win the fabled world title. The book explores why Australia became the world epicentre of motorcycling for a moment in history and details how the major races of the 70s were won and lost. It also uncovers the fascinating story behind the birth of the world's first Superbike series that went global. This book is tribute to the 1970s and how it shaped motorcycle racing in Australia, and the world. Enjoy the ride!

As fearless with his opinions as he is on the racetrack, Casey includes all the highs and lows of his life so far: the real reason he left for Europe so young, his thoughts on racing as it stands today, the riders' hierarchy, the politics of racing, the importance of family, his battle with illness and why he decided to turn his back on a multimillion-dollar contract when he was still winning. And he will let us in on some of the new goals he has set for himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian bush has conjured up some crazy legends, but the rise and rise of two-time Dakar champion Toby Price is surely one of its best. Who knew that the remote town of Roto (pop. 41) would be the launching pad of one of the greatest motorsports athletes the world has seen, fit to tackle and triumph over the planet’s most gruelling endurance race? Toby Price has lived a truly remarkable life, filled with ups, downs and every bump in the road imaginable: a childhood racing prodigy from the tender age of 2 – there was hardly a paddock that could contain him. After tearing through the junior ranks, taking out titles in both dirt track and motocross, Toby was living the dream, turning pro at 16 and joining the formidable KTM Racing team. Soon he was turning heads internationally and tapped to take on the most forbidding enduro courses the sport could throw at him. But the clock and the elements weren’t his only adversaries. The death of his adored sister, Min; the tragic loss of mentors and rivals in the desert; countless broken bones and an accident that should have paralysed him for life – Toby’s story is a study in staying true to yourself and following your passion to its ultimate end: rain, hail or shine. The person who emerged from the crucible of so many trials is now one of the most beloved figures in Australian sport, a kid from the country whose need for speed took him to the top of the podium – and he’s not about to slow down now.

Book The Fine Cotton Fiasco

Download or read book The Fine Cotton Fiasco written by Peter Hoysted and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brisbane, 1984. It all started with a simple plan to secretly swap a mediocre horse with a faster one, and rake in the cash with a few well-placed bets. What could possibly go wrong? In The Fine Cotton Fiasco, Peter Hoysted and Pat Sheil brilliantly tell the scarcely believable tale of how - through a combination of horrendous mismanagement, terrible judgement and comically bad luck - the scheme gradually unravelled. How did a horse with white painted socks dripping onto the turf come to hold the hopes of punters across Australia and beyond? How was a supposedly secret plan so widely advertised that even the Queensland Commissioner of Police placed a bet? And how much of a cover-up ensued in the aftermath of this absolute debacle? The story of Fine Cotton is the stuff of Australian legend. It features hardcore crims, likeable rogues and a supporting cast that ranged from the hapless to the hopeless - with some entirely innocent bystanders thrown in for good measure. Not every crazy scheme cooked up by a couple of inmates in Boggo Road Gaol would culminate in a story that will be told across the nation for the next hundred years. But this one did.

Book McLaren MP4 4 Owners Workshop Manual

Download or read book McLaren MP4 4 Owners Workshop Manual written by Steve Rendle and published by Haynes Publishing UK. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The McLaren MP4/4 is the iconic Honda V6 turbo-powered F1 car built by McLaren for the 1988 grand prix season, driven by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. Remarkably, the car won all but one race during 1988, and took McLaren’s then-new recruit Senna to his first Drivers’ World Championship after a season-long battle with team-mate Prost. McLaren achieved an astonishing 10 one–two finishes with the car, and suffered only two car-related retirements during the season. The MP4/4 is still statistically the most dominant F1 car ever built. Ironically, the fact that McLaren was already an enormously successful and well-resourced team prior to 1988 has led to the assumption that producing another winning car in the form of the MP4/4 was simply business as usual. The truth is rather different, with many challenges along the way, mistakes to resolve and, as ever in motor racing, an element of luck, all playing a part in the MP4/4’s extraordinary success. A wealth of previously unpublished archive material, including original technical drawings and team documentation, provides fascinating new insight into the design and build of the MP4/4. Produced with the full cooperation of McLaren, and unique access to a race-winning MP4/4 chassis, this manual tells for the first time the accurate story of the design, engineering and operation of one of F1’s most iconic cars, featuring extensive and often candid input from the designers, engineers and drivers involved. The McLaren story: Brief history of McLaren prior to the MP4/4 and subsequent history to the present day. Design and build of the MP4/4: The full story of how a completely new car, along with a one-off Honda engine, were designed and built for the 1988 season. The MP4/4 in action: A race-by-race account of the MP4/4’s performance in the 1988 World Championship. The anatomy of the MP4/4: Chassis, aerodynamics, suspension, steering, brakes, Honda engine, transmission, wheels and tyres, cockpit and electrics. The drivers: Insight from Alain Prost and test-driver Emanuele Pirro, plus a profile of Ayrton Senna with thoughts from his former teammates. Appendices: Specifications, race results and statistics and full chassis histories.

A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger. When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A bold work from the author of The Black Swan that challenges many of our long-held beliefs about risk and reward, politics and religion, finance and personal responsibility In his most provocative and practical book yet, one of the foremost thinkers of our time redefines what it means to understand the world, succeed in a profession, contribute to a fair and just society, detect nonsense, and influence others. Citing examples ranging from Hammurabi to Seneca, Antaeus the Giant to Donald Trump, Nassim Nicholas Taleb shows how the willingness to accept one’s own risks is an essential attribute of heroes, saints, and flourishing people in all walks of life. As always both accessible and iconoclastic, Taleb challenges long-held beliefs about the values of those who spearhead military interventions, make financial investments, and propagate religious faiths. Among his insights: • For social justice, focus on symmetry and risk sharing. You cannot make profits and transfer the risks to others, as bankers and large corporations do. You cannot get rich without owning your own risk and paying for your own losses. Forcing skin in the game corrects this asymmetry better than thousands of laws and regulations. • Ethical rules aren’t universal. You’re part of a group larger than you, but it’s still smaller than humanity in general. • Minorities, not majorities, run the world. The world is not run by consensus but by stubborn minorities imposing their tastes and ethics on others. • You can be an intellectual yet still be an idiot. “Educated philistines” have been wrong on everything from Stalinism to Iraq to low-carb diets. • Beware of complicated solutions (that someone was paid to find). A simple barbell can build muscle better than expensive new machines. • True religion is commitment, not just faith. How much you believe in something is manifested only by what you’re willing to risk for it. The phrase “skin in the game” is one we have often heard but rarely stopped to truly dissect. It is the backbone of risk management, but it’s also an astonishingly rich worldview that, as Taleb shows in this book, applies to all aspects of our lives. As Taleb says, “The symmetry of skin in the game is a simple rule that’s necessary for fairness and justice, and the ultimate BS-buster,” and “Never trust anyone who doesn’t have skin in the game. Without it, fools and crooks will benefit, and their mistakes will never come back to haunt them.”

Book excerpt: Few names in international motorsport are treated with the same reverence as Alan Jones. When he speaks, they listen. He is one of only two Australians to win the Formula One World Drivers' Championship, and the first driver to do it for the now famous Williams team. His efforts brought Formula One to Australian TV screens, and today he is the voice of Formula One on Network Ten and a board member of the Australian Grand Prix. He is also a Formula One Steward at a couple of Grands Prix a season. AJ is the son of Stan Jones, the winner of the 1959 Australian Grand Prix, and from an early age he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and race cars. He started with billycarts in Balwyn and climbed to the top of the motorsport tree in Formula One. His career was potted with highs and lows, the latter coming mainly from a lack of financial support compared with his rivals. But when he hit the big time with Williams, he turned that into the 1980 World Championship and all the fame and fortune that brought with it. But he stopped enjoying himself, the cars were painful to drive and he didn't feel he could give it his all, so he quite at the height of his powers. He did return to F1, but he wasn't the same driver and it wasn't the same team and it didn't last. He finished his racing career in touring cars in Australia. His no-nonsense style brought him both admirers and detractors, but he always spoke as he saw it. He still does that today. There are many stories to tell from his racing career, his personal life and business. Some stories that only time allows them to be told.

Book excerpt: Harry Clark (1914-2002 is known across Australia for his wooden fishing boats. Born in Williamstown, Harry became a professional shipwright before designing and building wooden 'couta and other fishing boats that are now regarded as collectables. Written by his son, Ron Clark, this is the story of Harry's lifelong affinity with the sea. As a boy, Harry "mucked about" in boats and went fishing out of Queenscliff. He sailed in top company on nationally-known yachts on Port Phillip Bay. Later in life he went fishing by rowing a 12ft dinghy around the Bay, disdaining the use of an outboard motor. But Harry's crowning achievement was realising his dream of creating his own boats. While he and his wife "Dolly" raised a family of five in their home in Newport, Harry set about teaching himself boat design then building more than 40 boats over 40 years in their backyard. His boats are still going strong, some after almost 80 years.
