Book Picturing Texas Politics

Download or read book Picturing Texas Politics written by Chuck Bailey and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rare, previously unpublished photographs and iconic images of politicians from the state’s founders to Ann Richards, George W. Bush, and Rick Perry, here is the first-ever photographic album of Texas politicians and political campaigns. The Republic of Texas was founded in 1839, around the time that photography was being invented. So while there were no photographers at the Alamo or San Jacinto, they arrived soon after to immortalize, on film, Sam Houston, David Burnett, Mirabeau Lamar, and many other founding fathers of the Lone Star State. Over the following nearly two centuries, Texas politics and politicians have provided reliable, often dramatic, and sometimes larger-than-life subjects for photographers to capture in the moment and add to the historical record. Picturing Texas Politics presents the first photographic album of Texas politicians and political campaigns ever assembled. Chuck Bailey has searched archives, museums, libraries, and private collections to find photographs that have never been published, as well as iconic images, such as Russell Lee’s pictures of one of Ralph Yarborough’s campaigns. These photographs are arranged into four chronological sections, each one introduced by historian Patrick Cox, who also provides informative photo captions. The photographs display power and political savvy from the early Republic to Lyndon Johnson and Bob Bullock; unmatched dedication to Texas in the Hobby and Bush families; and the growing influence of women in politics, from Miriam “Ma” Ferguson to Barbara Jordan, Ann Richards, and Kay Bailey Hutchison. With Sam Houston’s jaguar vest, W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel’s hillbilly band, a famous governor with an ostrich, and prominent Texans eating watermelons, shooting guns, and riding horses, this is Texas politics at its liveliest and best.

She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave. Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family—past and present—is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family—especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. Deborah was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Had they killed her to harvest her cells? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance? Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.

Book Of Immortalized Warriors

Download or read book Of Immortalized Warriors written by William Mueller and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OF IMMORTALIZED WARRIORS is a portrayal of the United States during the controversial wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Center stage in the novel is the late Captain Theodore Hume, the most decorated warrior in the country. It is his widow who engages Dr. James Isner, an upstart Ivy League economist, and Riley Cooper, a close acquaintance, both former Marines, to write a biography of this lionized but condemned Navy SEAL commando. Dr. Isner is determined to exploit the life of the American hero by advancing his own ideas that point to puzzling features of the United States, of Western culture and, more generally, of mankind's evolution that has up to now not been fully explained. The skeletons in the closet are the independent and inspiring Dotti Moore, Hume's first wife, who leaves him for another man, and a shocking but innovative clandestine mission he heads up in Afghanistan. A modern-day story of blood and treasure, politics, society, religion, fellowship, and wartime memories of an American hero. Linkages to Ancient Greece and Rome and former empires of the Middle East are examined?it is Mueller at his best. A skillfully crafted study of man and of freedom in the world. OF IMMORTALIZED WARRIORS, Mueller's fourth book, is a poignant military tale, with an exceptional message, and you will love it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Despite being virtually unavailable since its original publication in 1970, Perro del amor (Love Hound) has greatly influenced the rich tradition of Chilean literature. Written three years before the military overthrow of the government by Augusto Pinochet, these poems offer concise but penetrating language that still resonates today. Opening with spare meditations on solitude, intimacy and suicide, the volume then reflects on degraded familial relationships and ends with a powerful evocation of the erotic. This bilingual collection offers an emotional landscape rarely seen in poetry.

Book Governing Codes

Download or read book Governing Codes written by Karrin Vasby Anderson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Familiar narratives and simplistic stereotypes frame the representation of women in U.S. politics. Pervasive containment rhetorics, such as the distinction between women as mothers and caregivers and men as rational thinkers, create unique hurdles for any woman seeking public office. While these 'governing codes' generally act to constrain female political power, they can also be harnessed as a resource depending on the particular circumstances (e.g., party affiliation, geographic location and personal style). One of these governing codes, the metaphor, is an especially powerful tool in politics today, particularly for women. By examining the political careers of four of the most prominent and influential women in contemporary U.S. politics_Democrats Ann Richards and Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republicans Christine Todd Whitman and Elizabeth Dole_Karrin Vasby Anderson and Kristina Horn Sheeler illustrate how metaphors in public discourse may be both familiar narratives to embrace and boundaries to overturn.

Book Texas Monthly On

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1973, Texas Monthly has spotlighted hundreds of Texans who, for better or worse, make this state like no place else. TEXAS MONTHLY On . . . Texas Women profiles thirteen women who are not only fascinating in their own right, but also representative of the legions of women who have contributed to the character and uniqueness of Texas. They range from First Ladies Laura Bush and Lady Bird Johnson to pop culture icons such as Candy Barr and Janis Joplin—and all of them exemplify the qualities that make Texas women distinctive. The women's profiles originally appeared as articles in the magazine, authored by some of Texas Monthly's notable writers—Cecilia Ballí, Gary Cartwright, Paul Burka, Mimi Swartz, Jan Jarboe Russell, Skip Hollandsworth, Robert Draper, William Broyles Jr., Jan Reid, Joe Nick Patoski, Pamela Colloff, and Helen Thorpe. The writers also introduce their pieces with headnotes that update the stories or, in some cases, tell the story behind the story. TEXAS MONTHLY On . . . Texas Women is the first in a series of books in which the editors of Texas Monthly will offer the magazine's inimitable perspective on various aspects of Texas culture, including food, politics, travel, and music, among other topics.
