She was both popular and extremely prolific, writing 23 novels, 39 short stories and several collections of poetry throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As a critic she promoted the work of Ezra Pound and the Imagist poets, and the novelist Dorothy Richardson, among others. She also wrote works of philosophy and was involved in the key issues of her day, writing pamphlets for the suffrage movement, propogating psycho-analytic thought, and she visited Belgium as part of an ambulance unit at the start of WWI. This novel was first published in 1908 and includes illustrations and decorations by Clarence Coles Phillips (1889-1927).

She was an active suffragist, and member of the Woman Writers' Suffrage League. She was also a significant critic, in the area of modernist poetry and prose; the term stream of consciousness, in its literary sense, is attributed to her. From 1896 she wrote professionally, to support herself and her mother, who died in 1901. She treated a number of themes relating to the position of women, and marriage. She also wrote non-fiction based on studies of philosophy, particularly German idealism. Her works sold well in the United States. Among her most famous works are: The Divine Fire (1904), Superseded (1906), The Helpmate (1907), The Judgment of Eve (1907), The Belfry (1916), The Romantic (1920), Mr. Waddington of Wyck (1921), Anne Severn and the Fieldings (1922) and Life and Death of Harriett Frean (1922).

Francis Scott Fitzgerald became a mouthpiece for ideas and expressed the spiritual moods bubbling amongst the young people during the 1920s. Fitzgerald was the first to tell the world about the commencement of the “jazz age” with its carnival approach towards life- a lifestyle which he also followed. However, as a sensitive artist, he could not help but notice the dualistic nature of this philosophy. Fitzgerald's writing demonstrated that a life spent at the carnival would inevitably lead to bankruptcy. Fitzgerald often worked on multiple short stories simultaneously while writing his novels. Later, these stories were compiled. His relationship and love for his wife Zelda fueled much of his writing. Her diagnosis and hospitalization for schizophrenia in 1930 affected him greatly. In his later years, Fitzgerald worked in Hollywood on movie scripts. His last novel, The Last Tycoon, remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1940 and reflected his Hollywood experiences.
