Book The ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA of NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY ROLLSIGNS and ANCILLARY ITEMS VOLUME II

Download or read book The ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA of NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY ROLLSIGNS and ANCILLARY ITEMS VOLUME II written by and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues where Volume I ended. It begins with the BMT and IND Black & White upper and lower case readings and continues with all the color signs of the end of rollsigns in the early 21st Century. By the late 1960's the BMT Lines and IND lines were designated as Division "B". The IRT Lines were designated Division "A". (IRT signs will be covered in Volume III.) Originally, color signs bore colors of no particular significance. Eventually a color code was created based upon the Manhattan trunk line in which a particular route operated. By the late 1970's, the New York City Subway had plummeted into a dark dirty dismal era. Fare beaters, graffiti and just plain filth were commonplace in the New York City Subway. Maintenance was at an all time low with derailments and cars out of service on a daily basis. The backbone of the BMT were the Standards and the D-Types. They were both retired by this time, the last D-Type in 1965 and the last of the Standard in 1969. The original cars of the IND, the R-1/9's were retired in 1977 from regular passenger service. Halvetica is a font that was developed for the purpose of standardizing signage. The New York City Subway began to use this font on the rollsigns as well as the station signage. It also introduced the use of upper and lower case letters. While it is true that the standardization of fonts was incorporated into Halvetica, the final product did not have the same order of appearance. Upper and lower case lettering is not as easy to read as block letters (capital letters). Additionally, the sizing of the individual letters within the same size is not standard. Spacing of the letters was not standardized as well as the centering of the signage itself. When you take a look at the signage for example of the R-16 Side Route Signs, it looks like a grade school student placed the letters to form the sign.

Book SUBWAY SNAPSHOTS and ELEVATED EPITAPHS VOL I

Download or read book SUBWAY SNAPSHOTS and ELEVATED EPITAPHS VOL I written by Gregory Gil and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a presentation of subway snapshots of the New York City Subway System. The photographs have been printed from original negatives. They are all black and white. There were several types of films used, some 35mm but mostly 120 and 620. The 120 negative is a 2 1/4 inch x 2 1/4 inch size and the 620 is 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Some of the photos are cropped to fit the best size relative to the subject matter. These original negatives are part of the author's collection and have never been printed before. The original photographer is unknown. All of these negatives were stored in individual envelopes. The captions including the dates for the photographs presented in this book have been derived from these envelopes. This book is arranged in car number order, with some exceptions as noted. The goal is to show each individual car and sometimes the photographs can be a bit repetitious. Some of the photographs are better than others and we tried not to exclude many and to print the collection in its entirety. Most of these photographs were taken by Norman Rolfe in the 1940's and printed from digital scans of the original negatives. Many of the envelopes containing these negatives had only a car number and date. Norman Rolfe was a retired electrical engineer who became a citizen advocate for public transit in the San Francisco Bay Area. He passed on January 15, 2010. Mr. Rolfe traveled many cities throughout the United States (and abroad) taking countless photographs of various transit systems. There are some "copy negatives" from his collection dating to an earlier time and they are presented here as well because they are part of the "Norman Rolfe Collection".The unknown photographer is a series of photographs presented here from the collection of Douglas Grotjahn. All the photographs in this book have been professionally processed and presented. They were sized and cropped for the format of this book. Prints are available at www.GoodStuffNowLLC.com.
