It was necessary to kindle an interest in illumination to show its vast possibilities and, in some cases, to remove Old prejudices, by the harmonious co-operation of the members of the Council of the Society, and the services Of the large number of corresponding members in different countries to whom special problems were referred for elucidation as they arose. The writer would like to make special acknowledgment of the able assistance rendered by his friend and co-worker, Mr. J. S. Dow, who has been associated with him in this work since the commencement Of the movement. We have all felt that we were engaged on a labour Of love and a process of self-education. Our eyes were enchanted by the glamour Of a new field of knowledge, with so many rich unexplored regions and such countless interesting channels of communication with other studies. Originally the neglected step-child and nobody's business, illumination is now coming to be rightly recognised as the concern of every body - an essential alike in daily life and in every vocation. It is a legitimate source of pride that this was the first country in Europe to recognise the importance of illumination by founding a special society for its study, and our journal, which has been the official organ of the Society since its foundation, is still the only one in Europe devoted ex elusively to lighting problems and the impartial treatment of all illuminants. Before the Society was organized, lighting was largely a matter of guessing. Now it is a matter of science, and the rule of thumb that existed before has given way to definite calculations which may be depended upon to ensure the same lighting result in all cases under stated conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illuminating Engineer, Vol. 10: Jan. 1917 to Dec. 1917 The discussion on this subject at the last meeting of the Illuminating Engineering Society marks an important stage in our progress towards more scientific and definite methods of comparing sources of light. 'the origination of the Lumen, as a measure of flux of light, and as a basis of comparison of the illuminating power of sources is due to Professor A. Blondel, who first suggested the expression at the International Electrical Congress at Geneva in 1896. It is thus in no sense of German origin, as one of our contemporaries incautiously suggests. (in any case, the comment is irrelevant. The only points of importance are the convenience and scientific value of the term, irrespective or its origin.) In France, on the other hand, whence this unit originated, the Societe Francaise de Physique passed a resolution about three years ago, advocating rating on this basis and in the United States, the Illuminating Engineering Society, which is representative of gas, electricity, and all other methods of lighting, formally adopted this method of rating at the Convention held last September. It was therefore natural that the matter should receive the attention of the Illuminating Engineering Society in this country.
