Download or read book The Illinois River written by Kim Baker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illinois River is one of the most beloved and utilized rivers in the state. The natural benefits derived from the river support ecosystems and economies, while providing rich context for the region’s cultural heritage and nourishment for the soul. Unfortunately, the river is at risk. This book aims to shine a bright light on the Illinois River and all the river provides with the goal of inspiring the public to make better-informed decisions about their precious natural resource for the benefit of future generations. While photography is the cornerstone of the book, collaboration was the foundation. A collaboration of Oklahoma photographers and authors committed to this important conservation book designed to use art and important stories to empower environmental conservation. The Illinois River Survey photography book will serve as an important public outreach tool for Save the Illinois River (STIR) and will help bridge the gap between the river and the public. The book is a powerful force for conservation through its ability to influence, inform and inspire. The book begins with a special foreword by Oklahoma river advocate, Drew Edmondson and introduction by Oklahoma author, John Gifford. The book tells the story of the Illinois River and the region through which it flows, beginning with an essay by NSU History Professor, Brad Agnew, who writes about the rich history of the Illinois River. The next essay covers conservation photography, explaining photography’s pivotal role in the history of wilderness conservation and the future of the Illinois River. An essay by Oklahoma author Sheilah Bright narrates the Illinois River Survey event in May of 2011, and delves into the cultural heritage of the Illinois River and the importance of the river to people, local communities and all Oklahomans. The next essay by Priscilla Crawford of the Oklahoma Biological Survey and Natural Areas Registry describes the ecological diversity of the Illinois River watershed; and Mike Fuhr, director of the Oklahoma Nature Conservancy, explains the importance of environmental flows for the biodiversity of the Illinois River ecosystem. May 20 – 22, 2011, a team of Oklahoma photographers together with scientists, land and river managers, water officials, conservationists, and river advocates explored and documented important components of the Illinois River Watershed in a three-day photographic survey. The Survey group focused on the Illinois River’s unique ecological communities, the rivers ecosystems, with an emphasis on the natural services the rivers provides, and the history and unique cultural heritage of the Illinois River to the region, local river communities, and Tahlequah. Compelling photography can make a difference. The goal for the Illinois River Survey: A Visual Record is for the conservation photography book to be a timely and relevant piece of literature that will help the river today, and be a lasting record of the Illinois River for the future.

Book excerpt: Photographer and writer Tim Palmer has spent more than 25 years researching and experiencing life on the waterways of the American continent. He has travelled by canoe or raft on more than 300 different rivers, down wide placid streams and rough raging rapids. His journeys have taken him to every corner of the country, where he has witnessed and described the unique interaction of geographical, historical, and cultural forces that act upon our nation's vital arteries. Filled with important new information as well as data gathered from hundreds of published sources, America by Rivers covers: the network of American waterways and how they fit together to form river systems unique features of individual rivers along with their size, length, and biological importance environmental problems affecting the rivers of different regions and what is being done to protect and restore them cultural connections and conflicts surrounding the rivers of each region Chapters address the character of rivers in distinct regions of the country, and each chapter highlights one river with a detailed view from the water. Rivers profiled include the Penobscot, Potomac, Suwanee, Minnesota, Niobara, Salmon, Rio Grande, American, Rogue, and Sheenjek. Eighteen maps guide the reader across the country and 100 photos illustrate the splendor of Palmer's fascinating subject. Download or read book Wide Rivers Crossed written by Ellen E. Wohl and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wide Rivers Crossed, Ellen Wohl tells the stories of two rivers—the South Platte on the western plains and the Illinois on the eastern—to represent the environmental history and historical transformation of major rivers across the American prairie. Wohl begins with the rivers’ natural histories, including their geologic history, physical characteristics, ecological communities, and earliest human impacts, and follows a downstream and historical progression from the use of the rivers’ resources by European immigrants through increasing population density of the twentieth century to the present day. During the past two centuries, these rivers changed dramatically, mostly due to human interaction. Crops replaced native vegetation; excess snowmelt and rainfall carried fertilizers and pesticides into streams; and levees, dams, and drainage altered distribution. These changes cascaded through networks, starting in small headwater tributaries, and reduced the ability of rivers to supply the clean water, fertile soil, and natural habitats they had provided for centuries. Understanding how these rivers, and rivers in general, function and how these functions have been altered over time will allow us to find innovative approaches to restoring river ecosystems. The environmental changes in the South Platte and the Illinois reflect the relentless efforts by humans to control the distribution of water: to enhance surface water in the arid western prairie and to limit the spread of floods and drain the wetlands along the rivers in the water-abundant east. Wide Rivers Crossed looks at these historical changes and discusses opportunities for much-needed protection and restoration for the future.
