This book represents a concerted effort to think about the composition of Bronze Age metal as the product of human intentionality as well as of geology. It considers the trace element composition of the metal, the alloying elements, and the lead isotopic composition, showing how a combination of these aspects, along with archaeological context and typology, can reveal much more about the life history of such artefacts, expanding considerably upon the rather limited ambition of knowing where the ore was extracted.

This volume brings together leading specialists in archaeobotany, economic zooarchaeology, and palaeoanthropology to discuss practices of food production and consumption in their social dimensions from the Mesolithic to the Early Iron Age in the Balkans, a region with intermediary position between and the Aegean Sea on one side and Central Europe and the Eurasian steppe regions on the other. The prehistoric inhabitants of the Balkans were repeatedly confronted with foreign knowledge and practices of food production and consumption which they integrated and thereby transformed into their life. Information concerning the west-central sector around Izmir is particularly limited and underlines the significance of the results from Ulucak, an ancient mound site, and the first Neolithic site to be excavated in this part of Anatolia. The Neolithic settlement is superimposed by the debris of three other main cultural periods, providing an important sequence for the Izmir region. From top to bottom the periods are: Late Roman - Early Byzantine (Period I), Early Bronze Age II (Period II), Late Chalcolithic Age (Period III) and Late Neolithic (Period IV). Of these the Late Neolithic settlement is the most significant, attesting to influences from the Aegean, the Balkans and the Konya Plain. This volume presents the results to date of this multi-disciplinary project, ranging from palaeogeography, through stratigraphy and settlement plans to an analysis of the finds, focusing especially on the Late Neolithic.
