Book Readings on Igala People Land and Language

Download or read book Readings on Igala People Land and Language written by Idris Ejima Aruwa and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive history of the Igala kingdom (Kogi state, Nigeria), people, land and language based on the study of the oral traditions, cultural practices, articles, published and unpublished works on Igala history. It is a compendium of the history of the Igala people from the Pre-16th century to the present day using the Igala cultural and rituals practices as evidence of historical events. It is a scholarly work on the chronology of the events that led to the establishment of the present dynastic monarchy in Igala land and the creation of the Igala kingdom which became the greatest pre-colonial kingdom in the River Niger-Benue confluence area in Nigeria, with its influence on the cultural, political and commercial developments on the northern Igbo country and along the River Niger down to the Niger-Delta area. The chronology was discussed under three main eras; the Pre-Dynastic Monarchy Era, the Proto-Dynastic Monarchy Era and The Dynastic Monarchy Era. The events that took place in each of these eras were extensively reported. The book illustrates the cultural leadership development of the autochthonous Igala clans, the Benin vassal Aji-Ata dynasty, the Achadu clan and the Empire building escapades of Ayegba oma Idoko starting from his progenitor “Abutu-Ejeh” breakaway from the ancient Jukun led Kwararafa Kingdom. Other subjects discussed include; the real history behind the sacrifice of Princess Inikpi and Oma-Odoko, the funeral rites and coronation rituals for the Ata-Igala and the origin of the name “Igala”. This book is recommended for students of history and those who want to enrich their knowledge on Igala, people, land, language and other related cultural matters.

The Igala are the 7th largest ethnic group in Nigeria and played significant roles in the formation of Nigeria having been made host to the capital of Nigeria at Lokoja in the past, with Lugard as the Governor. Situated in the eastern part of the river Niger and Benue confluence, and also extending across the Niger in Lokoja, Kogi state of Nigeria, lies the homeland of the gala people. The kingdom is bounded to the North by the river Benue and to the South by the Anambra State, to the East by Benue and Enugu States and to the West the river Niger which forms the boundary between the kingdom and Edo state. It should be noted that Bassa Local Government Area comprising of Bassa Nge, Basssa Komo and Mozum which was administered as part of the Igala Kingdom from 1918-1977, lies within the same angle formed by the Niger and Benue rivers.

Book A Grammar of Igala

Download or read book A Grammar of Igala written by Ejeba, Salem Ochala and published by M & J Grand Orbit Communications. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book establishes 28 phonemic consonants and 7 vowels, as well as lexical and grammatical tones in Igala. It shows the canonical syllable types as V and CV with no complexity, and relates resyllabification to the retiming of segments as tone bearing units and the duration of their mora. The work discusses nine word classes, as well as ideophones and clitics in Igala. There are splitting verbs of various structures and fully-fledged pronouns with morphologically toneless clitic counterparts that are toned in their syntactic context, among other elements of the Igala morphology. The work establishes clitics as generally bearing the grammatical tones of various categories as a result of their morphological tonelessness and their availability for post-lexical tone assignment. It also accounts for the generally complex interaction of clitics and tones in the organisation of the morphosyntax and the tone-syntax interface. Igala has both verbal and nominal extensional affixes with various semantic features. Some interesting discussions in the Igala syntax include the structural and functional types of serial verb constructions, the detransitivizing process of verb movement in object demoting structures, coreferentiality in relativised constituents and the future/non-future temporal distinction. Complementary binominals are conjoined with a specified binominal morpheme, and their rigidly irreversible structures have implications in the Igala semantics. The binominals demonstrate a grammatically specified pattern defined over a conceptual space, showing the network among conceptual categories, such as kinship, marital, social, hunter-hunted, more-less and cause-effect relationships as reflected in the Igala grammar.
