This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two decades economic and social policy in most of the world has been guided by the notion that economies function best when they are fully exposed to competitive market forces. In labour market policy, this approach is reflected in the widespread emphasis on "flexibility" - a euphemism for the retrenchment of income support and social security, the relaxation of labour market regulations, and the enhanced power of private actors to determine the terms of the employment relationship. These strategies have had marked effects on labour market outcomes, leading to greater vulnerability and polarization - and not always in ways that enhance worker-centred flexibility. The authors offer a more balanced analysis of the functioning and effects of labour market regulation and deregulation. By questioning the underpinnings of the "flexibility" paradigm, and revealing its often damaging impacts (on different countries, sectors, and constituencies), they challenge the conclusion that unregulated market forces produce optimal labour market outcomes. The authors conclude with several suggestions for how labour policy could be reformulated to promote both efficiency and equity.

It has since become a flagship product of the International Labour Office (ILO) and is used on a daily basis by researchers and policy-makers throughout the world. The KILM: (i) is a comprehensive database of country-level data on 18 key indicators of the labour market from 1980 to the latest available year. In this context, the KILM can serve as a tool for policy-makers and researchers in monitoring and assessing many of the pertinent issues related to the functioning of labour markets; (ii) is a source of the latest ILO world and regional estimates of employment and unemployment indicators. The estimates are presented in a box in each indicator's manuscript along with an analysis of the global and regional trends and data; (iii) is a training tool on development and use of labour market indicators. Each indicator is accompanied by descriptions of the standard international definition of the concept and measurement procedures, guidelines on how the indicator can be used in analyses of labour market issues, and words of caution on comparability limitations. Readers are guided on the value of using multiple indicators to develop a broader view of labour market developments.

Book Labour Markets Institutions and Inequality

Download or read book Labour Markets Institutions and Inequality written by Janine Berg and published by Edward Elgar Pub. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A defining feature of recent decades has been the rise in income inequality within many, but certainly not all, countries, and perhaps most spectacularly in the US and UK. the reigning explanation remains the orthodox story that it's all about supply and demand - the failure of education to keep up in the race with technological advances - a story in which labor market institutions, bargaining power and social norms enter either as bit players or are ignored altogether. A powerful and welcome antidote, the essays in this fine book make the case that strong institutions are not only the Building blocks of Just Societies, but can be, if well-designed, fully consistent with high employment, dynamic economies.' - David R. Howell, New School of Social Research, US

Book Developing and Utilizing Employability Capitals

Download or read book Developing and Utilizing Employability Capitals written by Tran Le Huu Nghia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate employability is a significant concern for most higher education institutions worldwide. During the last two decades, universities have attempted to implement their employability agendas to support their students to enhance employment outcomes. However, within today’s globalized labour markets, employability has gone far beyond the notion of obtaining stable and permanent employment. This book explores graduates’ experiences in developing and utilizing employability capitals for career development and success in different labour markets. In the chapters, the graduate contributors narrate and discuss how they negotiated their employability on the transitions across jobs, occupational sectors and labour markets. The chapters address key issues, including how employability is understood by graduates of different disciplines, at different career stages and in different contexts; how they develop and utilise such capitals along with strategies to negotiate their employability; and what can be done to move the higher education employability agenda forward. The book presents international insights and perspectives into transitions from education to work and career development across the labour markets, as well as calls for improving the graduate employability agenda. It is an invaluable resource for researchers and academics, university leaders, policymakers and students who are concerned about graduate employability.

Book The Long Shadow of Informality

Download or read book The Long Shadow of Informality written by Franziska Ohnsorge and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large percentage of workers and firms operate in the informal economy, outside the line of sight of governments in emerging market and developing economies. This may hold back the recovery in these economies from the deep recessions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic--unless governments adopt a broad set of policies to address the challenges of widespread informality. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of the extent of informality and its implications for a durable economic recovery and for long-term development. It finds that pervasive informality is associated with significantly weaker economic outcomes--including lower government resources to combat recessions, lower per capita incomes, greater poverty, less financial development, and weaker investment and productivity.
