Spellbinding."--New York Times The year is 1908, the place, a small Greek island in the declining days of the crumbling Ottoman Empire. For twenty years Basil Pascali has spied on the people of his small community and secretly reported on their activities to the authorities in Constantinople. Although his reports are never acknowledged, never acted upon, he has received regular payment for his work. Now he fears that the villagers have found him out and he becomes engulfed in paranoia. In the midst of his panic, a charming Englishman arrives on the island claiming to be an archaeologist, and charms his way into the heart of the woman for whom Pascali pines. Book Hunter S Thompson

Download or read book Hunter S Thompson written by Kevin T. McEneaney and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade after Hunter S. Thompson’s death, his books—including Hell’s Angels, The Curse of Lono, The Great Shark Hunt, and Rum Diary—continue to sell thousands of copies each year, and previously unpublished manuscripts of his still surface for publication. While Thompson never claimed to be a great writer, he did invent a new literary style—“gonzo”—that has been widely influential on both literature and journalism. Though Thompson and his work engendered a significant—even rabid—following, relatively little analysis has been published about his writing. In Hunter S. Thompson: Fear, Loathing, and the Birth of Gonzo, Kevin T. McEneaney examines the intellectual background of this American original, providing biographical details and placing Thompson within a larger social and historical context. A significant portion of this book is devoted to the creation, reception, and legacy of his most important works, particularly Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In addition to discussing influences on Thompson's work—including Homer, Nietzsche, Spengler, Melville, Twain, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Kerouac, and others—as well as the writers Thompson influenced, McEneaney also explains the literary origins of gonzo. With new biographical information about Thompson and an examination of his writing techniques, this book provides readers with a better understanding of the journalist and novelist. A look beyond the larger-than-life public persona, Hunter S. Thompson: Fear, Loathing, and the Birth of Gonzo will be of great interest to fans of Thompson’s work as well as to those wanting to know more about gonzo journalism and literature.

Book excerpt: Throughout Scripture, God reveals himself as the great I Am. He does not define himself with reference to any thing, person, or trait. He is, and that is enough. Women find themselves in a far different situation. When we introduce ourselves, we typically describe ourselves in terms of our relationships (the wife, mother, daughter, sister, or friend of someone else) or in terms of our accomplishments (our title, position, education, or accolades). When our identity is wrapped up in these external things, we inevitably (and exhaustingly!) strive to prove ourselves worthy of love, attention, or affirmation. God never meant for us to focus on whether we are "enough," whether we measure up. He made us--every piece of us--to be just as he is. Jerusha Clark discovered this while exploring Jesus's seven powerful "I am" statements recorded in the Gospel of John. She invites women to join her in embracing the life and truth of these words, relishing the freedom of an identity fixed on Christ alone while leaving behind fear, bitterness, busyness, and toxic thoughts that steal our joy and limit our power.

When he was in high school, one of friends vanished during an autumn hailstorm in a flash of light; an event only he saw. Unable to explain what happened, he lied to the authorities investigating the disappearance. Already mistrusted as an outsider in his own home town, the incident caused him and the other friends who were on the hill that night to be shunned by his neighbors. Adam left Milltown, North Carolina after high school graduation, attended college and achieved his dream of becoming an archaeologist. After a near-fatal accident, Adam returns to his home state. He reconnects with his old high school friends and must face, once again the events of that night. Why have he and the others received letters taunting them about that night, hinting of future retribution? What can any of them do when faced with the abduction of their children and murder? What is the connection to that night? And why is Adam the only one who ever left Milltown? Will they find the answers under a Hunters Moon?

Book excerpt: Barry Unsworth returns to the terrain of his Booker Prize-winning novel Sacred Hunger, this time following Sullivan, the Irish fiddler, and Erasmus Kemp, son of a Liverpool slave ship owner who hanged himself. It is the spring of 1767, and to avenge his father's death, Erasmus Kemp has had the rebellious sailors of his father's ship, including Sullivan, brought back to London to stand trial on charges of mutiny and piracy. But as the novel opens, a blithe Sullivan has escaped and is making his way on foot to the north of England, stealing as he goes and sleeping where he can. His destination is Thorpe in the East Durham coalfields, where his dead shipmate, Billy Blair, lived: he has pledged to tell the family how Billy met his end. In this village, Billy's sister, Nan, and her miner husband, James Bordon, live with their three sons, all destined to follow their father down the pit. The youngest, only seven, is enjoying his last summer aboveground. Meanwhile, in London, a passionate anti-slavery campaigner, Frederick Ashton, gets involved in a second case relating to the lost ship. Erasmus Kemp wants compensation for the cargo of sick slaves who were thrown overboard to drown, and Ashton is representing the insurers who dispute his claim. Despite their polarized views on slavery, Ashton's beautiful sister, Jane, encounters Erasmus Kemp and finds herself powerfully attracted to him. Lord Spenton, who owns coal mines in East-Durham, has extravagant habits and is pressed for money. When he applies to the Kemp merchant bank for a loan, Erasmus sees a business opportunity of the kind he has long been hoping for, a way of gaining entry into Britain's rapidly developing and highly profitable coal and steel industries. Thus he too makes his way north, to the very same village that Sullivan is heading for . . . With historical sweep and deep pathos, Unsworth explores the struggles of the powerless and the captive against the rich and the powerful, and what weight mercy may throw on the scales of justice.

  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Crete written by Barry Unsworth and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "His keen understanding of history and legend...illuminate[s] his visits." —Publishers Weekly "A vivid picture of the island." —Associated Press "It is hard to think of anywhere on earth where so many firsts and mosts are crammed into a space so small," Barry Unsworth writes of the isle of Crete. Birthplace of the Greek god Zeus, the Greek alphabet, and the first Greek laws, as well as the home of 15 mountain ranges and the longest gorge in Europe, this land is indisputably unique. And since ancient times, its inhabitants have maintained an astonishing tenacity and sense of national identity, even as they suffered conquest and occupation by Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, Ottoman Turks, and Germans. Throughout this evocative book, now in trade paper, Unsworth describes the incredible physical and cultural proportions of the island—in history, myth, and reality. Moving and artful, Crete gives readers a comprehensive picture and rich understanding of this complex—and indeed, almost magical—world of Mediterranean wonders. With the same keen eye and clear, eloquent prose that distinguishes his acclaimed historical novels, Barry Unsworth delivers his readers a two-fold traveler's reward, at once a wonderfully detailed panorama of Crete's many layers of history and an evocative portrait of an island almost literally larger than life.

Book Empire and Education under the Ottomans

Download or read book Empire and Education under the Ottomans written by Emine O. Evered and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once hailed as 'the eternal state', the Ottoman Empire was in decline by the end of the nineteenth century, finally collapsing under the pressures of World War I. Yet its legacies are still apparent, and few have had more impact than those of its schools and educational policies. "Empire and Education under the Ottomans" analyses the Empire's educational politics from the mid-nineteenth century, amidst the Tanzimat reform period, until "The Young Turk Revolution in 1908". Through a focus on the regional impact of decrees from Istanbul, Emine O. Evered unravels the complexities of the era, demonstrating how educational changes devised to strengthen the Empire actually hastened its demise. This book is the first history of education in the Ottoman Middle East to evaluate policies in the context of local responses and resistance, and includes the first published English translation of the watershed 1869 Ottoman Education Law. A stimulating and impressively-researched study, it represents an important new addition to the historiography of the Ottoman Empire and will be essential for those researching its lasting legacy.

Book The Songs of the Kings

  • Author : Barry Unsworth
  • Publisher : Anchor
  • Release : 2017-11-14
  • ISBN : 0525435247
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book The Songs of the Kings written by Barry Unsworth and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant retelling of an ancient myth, The Songs of the Kings offers up a different narrative of the Trojan War, one devoid of honor, wherein the mission to rescue Helen is a pretext for plundering Troy of its treasures. As the ships of the Greek fleet find themselves stalled in the straits at Aulis, waiting vainly for the gods to deliver more favorable winds, Odysseus cynically advances a call for the sacrifice of Agamemnon’s daughter, Calchas the diviner interprets events for the reader, and a Homer-like figure called the Singer is persuaded to proclaim a tale of a just war to hide the corrupt motivations of those in power. But couched within the Singer’s spin is a message at once timely and timeless: “There is always another story. But it is the stories told by the strong, the songs of kings, that are believed in the end.”

Book Hunters Fishers and Foragers in Wales

Download or read book Hunters Fishers and Foragers in Wales written by Malcolm Little and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Lillie presents a major new holistic appraisal of the evidence for the Mesolithic occupation of Wales. The story begins with a discourse on the Palaeolithic background. In order to set the entire Mesolithic period into its context, subsequent chapters follow a sequence from the palaeoenvironmental background, through a consideration of the use of stone tools, settlement patterning and evidence for subsistence strategies and the range of available resources. Less obvious aspects of hunter-forager and subsequent hunter-fisher-forager groups include the arenas of symbolism, ritual and spirituality that would have been embedded in everyday life. The author here endeavors to integrate an evaluation of these aspects of Mesolithic society in developing a social narrative of Mesolithic lifeways throughout the text in an effort to bring the past to life in a meaningful and considered way. The term ‘hunter-fisher-foragers’ implies a particular combination of subsistence activities, but whilst some groups may well have integrated this range of economic activities into their subsistence strategies, others may not have. The situation in coastal areas of Wales, in relation to subsistence, settlement and even spiritual matters would not necessarily be the same as in upland areas, even when the same groups moved between these zones in the landscape. The volume concludes with a discussion of the theoretical basis for the shift away from the exploitation of wild resources towards the integration of domesticates into subsistence strategies, i.e. the shift from food procurement to food production, and assesses the context of the changes that occurred as human groups re-orientated their socioeconomic, political and ritual beliefs in light of newly available resources, influences from the continent, and ultimately their social condition at the time of ‘transition’.

Book The Antichrist Revealed

Download or read book The Antichrist Revealed written by Paul Sides and published by Rav Sha'ul. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I am going to clearly identify what has eluded mankind for 2,000 years... The identity of The Beast and the religion behind it. The Bible declares that all mankind will worship this Beast at the end and that has come true as it is the largest religion on Earth and this beast is a false image of the true Messiah who we have elevated in our hearts as God above Yahuah. The Creator, Yahuah, who revealed Himself in The Bible, warns us that His Word would be mistranslated and altered by Jewish scribes and twisted by Greeks into ‘another gospel’ that abolishes His Law and we would be presented with an “image” of the Messiah that is false called The Lawless One.This book is an all out Biblical assault and condemnation of this false messianic image known as The Antichrist... The Beast has been revealed and now we can “see” the Abomination of Desolation. Have you committed it! It is not too late to overcome it and rededicate the altar of your heart back to the one true God. In this book I am going to clearly identify what has eluded mankind for 2,000 years… The identity of the Beast and the religion behind it. The Bible declares that all mankind will worship the Beast at the end of 6,000 years. This has come true as the religion of this “beast” is the largest religion on Earth. The god of this “beast” is a false image of the true Messiah whom we have elevated in our hearts as God incarnate above Yahuah our Creator. The Beast (Greek: Θηρίον, Thērion) refers to two beasts described in the Book of Revelation as together they form the “god” and the religion behind this false god. The first beast comes from "out of the sea" and is given authority and power by the dragon. We are going to clearly identify the first beast and second beast and the dragon or ‘spirit behind the Beast’. The second beast comes from "out of the earth" and directs all peoples of the Earth to worship the first beast. The second beast is described in Revelation 13:11-18. The second beast is also referred to as the false prophet. The false prophet is not a physical man but rather the religious system that evolved around the worship of the first beast. This religious system is identified as Mystery Babylon b John and associated with Rome by Peter. The two beasts are aligned with the dragon in opposition to the Creator Yahuah and the Messiah Yahusha. This beastly system is another gospel built around the religion that evolved out of Babylon. As I explain in my first 3 books (Creation Cries Out!, Babylon the religion of the Beast, and Christianity the Great Deception) this religion is defined by its rituals which are opposed to the rituals defined by Yahuah in the Bible. Our Creator, Yahuah, who revealed Himself in The Bible, warns us that His word would be altered by translators and scribes then twisted by Greeks into ‘another gospel’. A false gospel that teaches that the Law was abolished and presents us with an “image” of the Messiah that is false. This false image of the true Messiah is called The Lawless One. You see, all humanity worships a false messiah and those who follow this false image of the true Messiah call him by a pagan name. They are addressing him by a name that literally means ‘Earthy Pig’ and gives glory to another god. They never knew his true name and they abolished the Law/Will of Yahuah and followed the Lawless One! Humanity has committed what the Bible calls the Transgression of Desolation which is the transgression of The Creator’s Feasts, Torah, and Sabbaths. This world-wide transgression causes the desolation of this planet and almost everyone on it. We call this the Great Tribulation when the Earth and its inhabitants must pay for abolishing the Law of Yahuah. The Great Tribulation is not caused by “the Antichrist committing the Abomination of Desolation” as we are taught in Christianity. The Great Tribulation is caused by the inhabitants of Earth committing the Rav Sha’ul Transgression of Desolation as we have believed in The Lawless One.
