Book Sheath Rot Disease of Rice

Download or read book Sheath Rot Disease of Rice written by K. Manibhushan Rao and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheath rot (ShR) has been known almost for a century, but was restricted to South East Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. Occurrence of the disease became widespread in mid 1970s when the high yielding technology was introduced by planting improved N-responsive cultivars. Today, ShR is a major constraint in rice production in irrigated as well as rainfed, upland rice. The disease has been reported in many rice growing countries and its spread causes concern because of its transmission and dissemination. The causal fungi, Sarocladium spp, have biological association with rice tungro virus, mites, stem-borers and mealy bugs and therefore increases the ShR incidence as well as severe yield losses. Scant information is available on the biology of the causal organism both in vitro and in vivo. Although a few tall cvs have been identified as resistant, almost all the high-yielding, improved cvs are susceptible to ShR. Biology of the ShR pathogens, host range, varietal resistance and future perspectives were discussed and the importance for a holistic approach to disease control was emphasized. Contents Chapter 1: History and distribution; Chapter 2: Symptomatology; Chapter 3: Disease Development; Disease incidence; Chapter 4: Disease Severity and Yield Loss; Linear and multiple regression analysis (MRA), Factors affecting yield loss; Chapter 5: Causal Organism; Nomenclature, Taxonomy, Type species, Morphology, Species concept, Light microscopic studies, SEM studies, Physiology, Carbon and nitrogen utilization, Sporulation, Toxins, Enzymes, Biochemical constituents, Mycelial constituents; Protein profile, Serological relationship, Crossed immunoeletrophoresis; Chapter 6: Pathogenicity; Mode of infection, Viruleuce of the isolates; Chapter 7: Host Range; Chapter 8: Disease Cycle; Chapter 9: Varietal Resistance; Method of inoculation, Method of scoring; Chapter 10: Host-Pathogen Interaction; N-fertilization, Phenol metabolism, PO/PPO, Plant hormones, Interaction with other stem attacking rice pathogens; Chapter 11: Disease Resistance; Induced resistance, Phytoalexins; Chapter 12: Disease Control; Breeding for disease resistance, Chemical control, Biological control, Antagonists, Soil amendments, Biofertilizers, Remedial measures; Chapter 13: Future Perspectives; Preamble, Host-pathogen interaction at molecular level, Induced host resistance, Biocontrol strategies.

Book Taxonomy and Ecology of Indian Fungi

Download or read book Taxonomy and Ecology of Indian Fungi written by K. G. Mukerji and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2010 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal world embodies diversified groups which colonize, multiply and survive in nature on many macro- and micro-ecological niches and substrates. Fungi are eukaryotic, achlorophyllous, filamentous or unicellular living organisms which are ubiquitous and cosmopolitan in distribution. Of the estimated 1.5 million fungal species, more than 98,000 fungal species have been described. Approximately 28,000 fungal species are reported from India. The fungi play an important role in biodegradation, recycling of organic matter, pharmaceutical industries, agriculture, medicine, industry, bioremediation, waste management and other activities. In India hardly we have database but for few a books on Indian fungi, compiled from time to time by some mycologists. The present book includes 16 chapters contributed by eminent mycologists. Chapters include data on diversity, taxonomy, ecology and application of Helicosporous fungi, genus Spegazzinia, Rusts and Smuts, Chaetomiaceae, Macrophomina, Rhizoctonia, Russula, wild edible fungi, poisonous mushrooms, insect fungi and other related aspects. Book excerpt: Rice is one of the principal cereals used by the world's inhabitants. The hope for improved nourishment of the world's population depends on the development of better rice varieties and improved methods for rice production and utilization. During the past four decades, interest in rice research and production has increased in many countries. The development of new and better varieties by the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and other rice research institutes has stimulated numerous research stations to test the performance of these varieties in many countries under different climates, soil properties, cultural practices, and environmental conditions. The methods of harvesting, handling, drying, and milling rough rice have improved as a result of research efforts by the engineers and the rice milling industries. The first edition of Rice: Production and Utilization was published in 1980. This second edition presents the recent developments and progress made by the researchers, the industries, and various experiment stations. Because of the large amounts of literature available in recent years on rice production and utilization, this edition is divided into two volumes, Volume 1: Production and Volume II: Utilization. It is hoped that the books will be useful to rice researchers, processors, and people interested in rice production and utilization. Those studying v vi PREFACE the agronomy of rice plants, especially the genetics, breeding, cultivation, diseases, and insects that attack both the rice plant and the stored grain, will find this edition helpful in their search for new knowledge.
