Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theodore Roosevelt, the Citizen All summer I have been fighting for leeway to sit down and write about Theodore Roosevelt, and glad am I that I have come to it at last. For there is nothing I know of that I would rather. But let us have a clear understanding about it. I am not going to write a "life" of him. I have seen it said in print that that was my intention. Well, it was. That was the shape it took in my mind at the start; but not for long. Perhaps one of the kindest things the years do for us as they pass is to show us what things we can not do. In that way they have been very kind to me. When I was twenty, there was nothing I could not do. Now I am glad that there are stronger and fitter hands than mine to do many things I had set my heart on. They must do this, then. Book Theodore Roosevelt and His Times

Download or read book Theodore Roosevelt and His Times written by Harold Howland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theodore Roosevelt and His Times: A Chronicle of the Progressive Movement He owed to his father, the first Theodore, the wise counsel that launched him on his determined contest against ill health. On the third floor of the house on East Twentieth Street in New York where he was born, October 27, 1858, his father had constructed an outdoor gymnasium, fitted with all the usual paraphernalia. It was an impressive moment, Roosevelt used to say in later years, when his father first led him into that gymnasium and said to him, "Theodore, you have the brains, but brains are of comparatively little use without the body; you have got to make your body, and it lies with you to make it. It's dull, hard work, but you can do it." The boy knew that his father was right; and he set those white, powerful teeth of his and took up the drudgery of daily, monotonous exercise with bars and rings and weights. "I can see him now," says his sister, "faithfully going through various exercises, at different times of the day, to broaden the chest narrowed by this terrible shortness of breath, to make the limbs and back strong, and able to bear the weight of what was coming to him later in life." All through his boyhood the young Theodore Roosevelt kept up his fight for strength. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Theodore Roosevelt When one thinks of the kind of man that Americans want an American to be one naturally thinks of Theo dore Roosevelt. He was in so many ways an example of fine citizenship that he is held up to the youth of our land as a type of what they may well strive to be. And he won this place in the hearts of our people by hard work. He did not easily become a sturdy, active, strenuous leader of his fellows. His whole life was a struggle: first, a struggle to become physically fit, then a struggle to become mentally fit, and finally a struggle to become politically fit. Things did not come easily to young Roosevelt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
