Reviere had few pretensions to profundity and a great purity of style. In an age of slogans and judgments, this volume reminds the reader of the extraordinary role of European critical thought in the twentieth century. Jacques Riviere (1886-1925) was a long time editor at NRF (Nouvelle Revue Francaise)-- from 1912-1914; and after the war was ended, from 1919-1925. He wrote steadily during this period, many of his essays appearing in this volume. He caught typhoid fever and died in February 1925. Henri Peyre (1901-1988) was Sterling Professor and chair of the French Department at Yale University. He was the author of numerous books including Literature and Sincerity, Baudelaire: A Collection of Critical Essays, and The Contemporary French Novel.
