It is the account of Norbert Landsheit, late sergeant in the York Hussars and 20th Light Dragoons, who saw service in the Peninsular War. He related his military life to the Rev. George R. Gleig, whom he met whilst an inmate at Chelsea Hospital in London, where the Gleig was rector at the time. Landsheit had an amazingly long career, and his memoir provides a fascinating insight into the experiences of a German soldier within the British Army.

Book excerpt: Exploiting Muscovy's Time of Troubles, Poland has invaded the chaotic country. Twenty-two-year-old Jacek Dąbrowski is an honorable, ferocious warrior in a company of winged hussars-an unrivaled, lethal cavalry. When his lieutenant dies in battle, Jacek is promoted to replace him, against the wishes of his superior, Mateusz, who now has more reason to eliminate him. Jacek dedicates his life to gaining the king's recognition and manor lands of his own. Consequently, he closely guards his heart, avoiding lasting romantic entanglements. Unscathed on the battlefield, undefeated in tournaments, and adored by women eager to share his bed, Jacek has never lost at anything he sets out to conquer. So when he charges toward his goals, he believes nothing stands in his way. Upon his return from battle, Jacek deviates from his ordinarily unemotional mindset and rescues enemy siblings, fifteen-year-old Oliwia and her younger brother, Filip, from their devastated Muscovite village. His act of mercy sets into motion unstoppable consequences that ripple through his well-ordered life for years to come-and causes him to irretrievably lose his heart. Oliwia has her own single-minded drive: to protect her young brother. Her determination and self-sacrifice lead her to adopt a new country, a new religion, and a new way of life. But it's not the first time the resilient beauty has had to remake herself, for she is not what she appears to be. As Jacek battles the Muscovites and Tatars threatening Poland's borders for months at a time, Oliwia is groomed for a purpose concealed from her. All the while, Mateusz's treachery and a mysterious enemy looming on the horizon threaten to destroy everything Jacek holds dear.

Book The Last Hussar

Download or read book The Last Hussar written by Peter Stephaich and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History comes alive in these pages as Peter Stephaich traces his origins from 1608 when King Rudolph II of Hungary conferred noble status on his family. He describes in fascinating detail his upbringing in a world which has long since ceased to exist. As a member of the elite Hussar Cavalry, Stephaich fought bravely on horseback against mechanized armies in World War II. At the start of his career in Hungary's elite diplomatic corps, the brutal Nazi occupation of his country left him destitute and in exile. He reinvented himself in the US as an announcer with Radio Free Europe, in Egypt as a shipping operator and in Paris as a stock broker where he also became the recognized expert on traditional hunting across Europe. Yet as Alexandre de Takacsy writes in his epilogue, Peter always had the deepest reverence for nature and wildlife. His was a life well lived in truly turbulent times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporal Harold J. Skaarup of Carleton County, New Brunswick was a Sherman tank commander in A Squadron of the 5th Armoured Regiment, 8th Princess Louise's New Brunswick Hussars during the Second World War. On the morning of the 31st of August 1944, he and his tank crew were fighting the Germans in Italy near a hill known as Point 136. His Squadron had already lost twelve of 19 tanks, ten to German 88mm anti-tank shells and 2 to breakdowns. That morning, Harold's tank was hit by a shell fired from a German 88mm anti-tank gun, and Harold was badly injured. Although he and his tank crew bailed out of the burning Sherman, mortar rounds began to land on them. Harold was hit again, this time taking shell fragments in his chest. He was evacuated to a field hospital in the rear area, but died later from his wounds on the 6th of September 1944. He was 24 years old. Today he lies buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Montecchio, Italy. He never got home to tell his story. This record is a partial chronicle of his service, by his nephew. We never met, but I do carry his name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new biography of possibly the most renowned light cavalryman There can be few, if any, students of the military history of the Napoleonic period who are unaware of the career of the flamboyant Antoine Charles Lasalle. General Lasalle did not only epitomise the spirit of the French light cavalry officer of his time, he became truly iconic--the archetypal 'hussar' who was brave to the point of recklessness on the battlefield and a libertine when there was no battle to fight. A soldier by the time he was just eleven years old, Lasalle rose meteorically through the ranks of the French light cavalry to become a General of Division. He fought in the early revolutionary campaigns, during the campaign in Italy--where he became a favourite of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Egyptian Campaign, during the War of the Fourth Coalition, in Spain and in the War of the Fifth Coalition at the battles of Aspern-Essling and at Wagram in 1809 where he was killed in the closing moments of the battle. This new and original Leonaur title follows Lasalle and his peers through all these campaigns and battles, and includes many of first-hand accounts and anecdotes in which Lasalle featured. Included are many illustrations and maps to support the text and this new biography will be an entertaining and essential addition to every library of the warfare of the age of Napoleon. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
