Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a boy and man in Queen Victoria's Royal Navy in the second part of the nineteenth century. It describes his training, action and becoming a man. It also describes the ship he sailed on, and her miraculous escape from a hurricane at Samoa in 1889 which destroyed four men-of-war, severely damaged two others, and wrecked all the smaller vessels in the port. The ship was the only vessel to escape the harbour. 147 sailors from Germany and America were drowned. The book gives an account of the storm based on eyewitness accounts, some previously unpublished, and also describes the lives of the main players, British, American, German and Samoan, who were involved. It is illustrated with images of the ships involved, some of the people, and the wrecks after the storm.

  • Author : Tom Stoppard
  • Publisher : Grove/Atlantic, Inc.
  • Release : 2011-05-16
  • ISBN : 0802195385
  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book Jumpers written by Tom Stoppard and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-05-16 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Stoppers's play "Jumpers" is both a high-spirited comedy and a serious attempt to debate the existence of a moral absolute, of metaphysical reality, of God. Michael Billington in "The Guardian" described the play succinctly: "The new Radical Liberal Party has made the ex-Minister of Agriculture Archbishop of Cantebury, British astronauts are scrapping with each other on the moon, and spritely academics steal about London by night indulging in murderous gymnastics: this is the kind of manic, futuristic, topsy-turvy world in which Stoppard's dazzling new play is set. And if I add that the influences apparently include Wittgenstein, Magritte, the Goons, Robert Dhery, Joe Orton, and The Avengers, you will have some idea of the heady brew Stoppard has here concocted." The protagonist incude an aging Professor Of Moral Philosophy -- trying to compose a lecture on "Man -- Good, Bad or Indifferent" -- while ignoring a corpse in the next room; his beautiful young wife, an ex-musical comedy Queen, lasciviously entertaining his university boss down the hall; her husband's specially trained hare, Thumpers; and a chorus of gymnasts, Jumpers.

Book Warships of the World to 1900

Download or read book Warships of the World to 1900 written by Lincoln P. Paine and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincoln P. Paine's SHIPS OF THE WORLD: AN HISTORICAL HISTORICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA was honored as one of the best reference books of the year by the New York Public Library, and Library Journal described it as "clearly the most fascinating book of the year." Now, in two equally fascinating new books, Paine focuses on two of the most interesting areas of maritime history: WARSHIPS OF THE WORLD TO 1900 and SHIPS OF DISCOVERY AND EXPLORATION. WARSHIPS OF THE WORLD TO 1900 traces the history of naval warfare through the stories of more than two hundred of the most famous and important fighting ships, from the earliest triremes and Viking longships to the Mary Rose, Wasa, Bonhomme Richard, HMS Victory, USS Constitution, USS Monitor, and Mikasa. Each ship is described in a vivid short essay that captures its personality as well as its physical characteristics, construction, and history, from the drawing board to the scrap yard or museum. Paintings and photographs show the grandeur and grace of these vessels that helped shape world events. An introductory essay, maps, and a chronology offer the reader a global perspective on the course of naval history from antiquity to the present.
