And conflicting loyalties leading them in opposite directions. Once an enchanted thrall of the evil Grey Enchantress, dragon shifter Jelverck is determined to atone for the sins of his past. Using his skills as a Master Huntsman, he puts all of his time, energy, and focus to protect the kingdom of Ardell. And the royal family who believed he was worthy of a second chance. Everly secret magic left her isolated and lonely until she became the companion to Glicien's Crown Princess when they were both little more than children. From that moment, she'd dedicated her entire life to Bea's safety and well-being, taking on the tasks of spy, bodyguard, and advisor while hiding behind the mask of a giddy, scatter-brained lady-in-waiting. When a renegade drake becomes a threat to both kingdoms, Jelverck and Everly join forces to track down the elusive enemy. On a fast-paced quest filled with intrigue and danger, the pair find an unexpected kinship and a growing connection that tangles their lives and hearts together. Until new threats pull their loyalties in different directions, reminding them that duty to their kingdoms has always come first.

Book excerpt: Sweet 16 or the coveted 18th birthday are milestone moments in a young girl’s life, but the only age Lillian Clemens is dreading of turning is 21. That would mean she's officially old enough to accept the title of Huntsman, an elite fighter born and raised to battle against the supernatural creatures that roam this earth. The only barrier between the human race and the monstrous demons scattered abroad, feasting on the unsuspecting innocents, unable to protect themselves. The night of her first mission, plans go awry and her own Huntsman partner is killed. Shouldering the blame herself, Lillian doesn't refute the rumors that it was her fault Nikolas is dead. The first lesson Huntsmen are taught is to keep your head in the game and not hesitate. But she'd failed. She'd broken the cardinal rule. Two months later, Lillian's planned the perfect mission, to attack and eliminate the creature that took Nikolas away from her. He was the first person that hadn't judged her based on her gender. Since the creation of the Huntsmen organization, only men have been appointed to the prestigious position. But with her father, Oliver, being the Huntsmen Leader, she was born into a role that she couldn't escape. Lillian hasn’t spent a day where wishing she was a man didn't cross her mind. Life would be so much easier. But then it wouldn't be hers. With the mission a success, but not approved by her father, Lillian is punished and given the ultimatum to either train and succeed to become a Leviathan, or die trying. Leviathan's were more ruthless and cunning than Huntsmen, or at least that's what Lillian had always been led to believe. Leviathan's were the soldiers sent in when a mission was deemed too dangerous for a Huntsman. They were the cleanup crew, so to speak. In her quest to assume the title of Leviathan, Lillian must fight for her life against dangerous creatures, but she must also learn that not everyone in this world is as cruel and maniacal as her father and the Councilman who wishes her dead. Opening herself up to the right people, and laying her trust and her heart in their hands, might be the only thing that'll keep her alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this probing look at Alfred Döblin's 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz and the stories of W. G. Sebald, Redeeming Words offers a philosophical meditation on the power of language in literature. David Kleinberg-Levin draws on the critical theory of Benjamin and Adorno; the idealism and romanticism of Kant, Hegel, Hölderlin, Novalis, and Schelling; and the nineteenth- and twentieth-century thought of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida. He shows how Döblin and Sebald—writers with radically different styles working in different historical moments—have in common a struggle against forces of negativity and an aim to bring about in response a certain redemption of language. Kleinberg-Levin considers the fast-paced, staccato, and hard-cut sentences of Döblin and the ghostly, languorous, and melancholy prose fiction of Sebald to articulate how both writers use language in an attempt to recover and convey this utopian promise of happiness for life in a time of mourning.

Book Ringleaders of Redemption

Download or read book Ringleaders of Redemption written by Kathryn Dickason and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular thought, Christianity is often figured as being opposed to dance. Conventional scholarship traces this controversy back to the Middle Ages. Throughout the medieval era, the Latin Church denounced and prohibited dancing in religious and secular realms, often aligning it with demonic intervention, lust, pride, and sacrilege. Historical sources, however, suggest that medieval dance was a complex and ambivalent phenomenon. During the High and Late Middle Ages, Western theologians, liturgists, and mystics not only tolerated dance; they transformed it into a dynamic component of religious thought and practice. This book investigates how dance became a legitimate form of devotion in Christian culture. Sacred dance functioned to gloss scripture, frame spiritual experience, and imagine the afterlife. Invoking numerous manuscript and visual sources (biblical commentaries, sermons, saints' lives, ecclesiastical statutes, mystical treatises, vernacular literature, and iconography), this book highlights how medieval dance helped shape religious identity and social stratification. Moreover, this book shows the political dimension of dance, which worked in the service of Christendom, conversion, and social cohesion. In Ringleaders of Redemption, Kathryn Dickason reveals a long tradition of sacred dance in Christianity, one that the professionalization and secularization of Renaissance dance obscured, and one that the Reformation silenced and suppressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sign of Redemption tells the story of a Richie Harrison, an innocent CPA who lands behind bars in a Texas prison--the unwitting “wheelman” in an unexpected armed robbery. Harrison falls in love with Elizabeth McKenna, a lawyer there to help Harrison’s deaf friend, and thoughts of her--and the life he’s lost--begin to obsess him. He escapes, on horseback and across a raging river, and finds safety with a drug-dealing family while scheming to win his love. To woo her, Harrison drags McKenna on a destructive journey that transforms him into the criminal he never imagined he’d become. From the book: When I first got sent down, I thought about escaping every day, and every day I thought of the bullet that would pierce my back and exit through my breastbone in a bloody spray. I thought of myself tumbling out of a dead run, my legs buckling, my face hitting the pavement. Maybe I’m just a coward if all it takes to make a coward is a vivid imagination. But I wasn’t here long before I found out what it sounded like when the blood left the body in gurgling rushes.

Book Poetics of Redemption

Download or read book Poetics of Redemption written by Andreas Kablitz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays on Dante collected in this volume interpret his Commedia as the attempt of a renewal of the Christian work of salvation by means of literature. In the view of his author, the sacro poema responds to a historical moment of extreme danger, in which nothing less than the redemption of mankind is at stake. The degradation of the medieval Roman Empire and the rise of an early capitalism in his birth town Florence, entailing a pernicious moral depravation for Dante, are to him nothing else but a variety of symptoms of the backfall of the world into its state prior to its salvation by the incarnation of Christ. Dante presents his journey into the other world as an endeavor to escape these risks. Mobilizing the traditional procedures of literary discourse for this purpose, he aims at writing a text that overcomes the deficiencies of the traditional Book of Revelation that, on its own terms, no longer seems capable of fulfilling his traditional tasks. The immense revaluation of poetry implied in Dante’s Commedia, thus, contemporarily involves the claim of a substantial weakness of the institutional religious discourse.

Book The Redemption of David Corson

Download or read book The Redemption of David Corson written by Charles Frederic Goss and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Redemption of David Corson written by Charles Frederic Goss. Published by INDIANAPOLIS THE BOWEN-MERREILL COMPANY PUBLISHERS. Copyright, 1900 by The Bowen-Merrill Company. Charles Frederic Goss was an American clergyman and author. His 1900 novel The Redemption of David Corson was a best selling book of that year. He also edited and partly authored a series of volumes on the history of Cincinnati. "This other Eden, demi-paradise, this fortress built by nature." —Richard II. Hidden away in this worn and care-encumbered world, scarred with its frequent traces of a primeval curse, are spots so quiet and beautiful as to make the fall of man seem incredible, and awaken in the breast of the weary traveler who comes suddenly upon them, a vague and dear delusion that he has stumbled into Paradise. Such an Eden existed in the extreme western part of Ohio in the spring of eighteen hundred and forty-nine. It was a valley surrounded by wooded hills and threaded by a noisy brook which hastily made its way, as if upon some errand of immense importance, down to the big Miami not many miles distant. A road cut through a vast and solemn forest led into the valley, and entering as if by a corridor and through the open portal of a temple, the traveler saw a white farm-house nestling beneath a mighty hackberry tree whose wide-reaching arms sheltered it from summer sun and winter wind. A deep, wide lawn of bluegrass lay in front, and a garden of flowers, fragrant and brilliant, on its southern side. Stretching away into the background was the farm newly carved out of the wilderness, but already in a high state of cultivation. All those influences which stir the deepest emotion of the heart were silently operating here—quiet, order, beauty, power, life. It affected one to enter it unprepared in much the same way, only with a greater variety and richness of emotion, as to push through dense brush and suddenly behold a mountain lake upon whose bosom there is not so much as a ripple, and in whose silver mirror surrounding forests, flying water-fowl and the bright disk of the sun are perfectly reflected.
