Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... Preface TO The Masters Of The United States And Canada And To The Readers Of This Volume: -- Some years ago, the perusal of a book edited by Sir Humphrey F. de Trafford, Bart., entitled "The Foxhounds of Great Britain and Ireland," led the authors of this volume to think that a similar publication, which would tell the histories of the packs of the Western Hemisphere, would be welcomed as supplying a chapter heretofore lacking in the annals of the sport, and serve to bring the hunting men and women of both countries into closer touch with one another. From Oregon to Virginia is a far cry, and no one who has not come in personal contact, as it were, with the Hunts throughout the country can realize the difficulty of getting together the material for this book. Most of the packs have been in existence a comparatively short time and many of them have kept no records at all. Up to the present time no accurate list even of the Hunts and their Masters has been extant, and though data concerning the more important ones have been published from time to time, they were so fragmentary that the authors venture to hope that this volume will prove useful to their fellow sportsmen throughout the country. We wish to take this opportunity to thank the Masters of Hounds of America and also the Hunt Secretaries who have, almost without exception, co-operated with us by sending data and photographs and by re-reading and correcting their respective articles before they were sent to press. We wish also to tender our gratitude to the following authors from whose writings we have drawn much useful information: -- Mr. Ralph N. Ellis, late Master of the Meadow Brook, for his article in "The Book of Sport," published by Messrs. J. F. Taylor & Co., Mr. George E....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foxhunting with Meadow Brook on Long Island, New York, was always about more than the fox, the hounds, or the horses. Meadow Brook was about its people—some powerful, some idle, many wealthy—and their shared joy in galloping across beautiful country, only minutes outside New York City. Doomed from its 1881 conception, the Meadow Brook hunt managed to survive for ninety years in spite of poor scenting, sandy soil, angry farmers, quirky millionaires, trolleys, trains, automobiles, and airplanes. Foxhunting withMeadow Brook tells the story of the people who, for almost a century, rode behind the Meadow Brook hounds.

Download or read book Six Centuries of Foxhunting written by M. L. Biscotti and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunting literature had its beginnings as early as the fourteenth century, when nobles hunted stag, bear, fox, and other game on horseback. As foxhunting grew in popularity, literary works that covered the sport flourished, as well. In Six Centuries of Foxhunting: An Annotated Bibliography, M. L. Biscotti has compiled all books produced in Great Britain and the United States that pertain to, or mention, foxhunting with hounds. Arranged alphabetically by author, more than 2000 titles are included. Each entry features details such as place and year of publication, publisher, book size, page count, illustrations, and binding. Nearly every title is also annotated with a description of the book’s contents, and biographical sketches are provided for the most notable authors. Narratives, histories, illustrated works, verse, fiction, and even anti-hunting literature all have their place in this volume. Six Centuries of Foxhunting also features more than thirty images of book covers and foxhunting illustrations. With appendixes that contain author, title, and illustrator time lines, and separate author and title indexes, this comprehensive bibliography is a valuable resource for researchers, book dealers and collectors, and foxhunters.

Book The Eighty Dollar Champion Adapted for Young Readers

Download or read book The Eighty Dollar Champion Adapted for Young Readers written by Elizabeth Letts and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adapted from the #1 New York Times bestselling adult novel, this inspiring true story of a man and horse duo who rose to the top of the competitive equestrian world is one of unstoppable hope, inconceivable dreams, and the chance to have it all, perfect for animal lovers and history buffs alike. On a bleak winter afternoon, Harry de Leyer first saw the horse he would name Snowman between the slats of a rickety truck bound for the slaughterhouse. Noting a spark in the horse's eye, the Dutch immigrant bought the beaten-up animal for only eighty dollars and took him to the family's modest farm on Long Island. Though Snowman thrived in his new home, Harry needed money. Reluctantly, he sold Snowman to another farm a few miles down the road. But the shaggy horse had other ideas. When he turned up back at Harry's barn, dragging an old tire and a broken fence board, Harry knew that he had misjudged the horse. Snowman then began his extraordinary path to stardom as Harry trained him to show jump, taking Snowman all the way to the very top of the sport. This dramatic and inspiring rise to stardom of an unlikely duo is based on the insight and recollections of the Flying Dutchman himself. Snowman and Harry's story captured the heart of Cold War-era America--a story of unstoppable hope, inconceivable dreams, and the chance to have it all. Elizabeth Letts's message is simple: Never give up, even when the obstacles seem sky-high. There is something extraordinary in all of us. Praise for the Adult Edition of The Eighty-Dollar Champion "A classic American dream story, with a down-on-its-luck horse galloping in for good measure."-USA Today "If you loved the story of Seabiscuit, the surprise champion racehorse, make a date to check out the true story of Snowman."-San Jose Mercury News “This is a wonderful book—joyous, heartfelt, and an eloquent reminder that hope can be found in the unlikeliest of places. Most of all, it’s a moving testament to the incredible things that can grow from the bond between animals and humans. If you love a great animal tale, you’ll love this book!”—Gwen Cooper, author of Homer’s Odyssey
