Ever since Lewis Carroll's nonsense epic appeared in 1876, readers have joined his ten-man Snark-hunting crew and pursued the search with great enthusiasm. What are they hunting for? What is the Snark? Numerous theories have been proposed. Carroll himself provides a helpful preface to the poem and is recorded as having explained to one reader: 'In answer to your question, 'What did you mean the Snark was?' will you tell your friend that I meant that the Snark was a Boojum. I trust that she and you will now feel quite satisfied and happy'

Book excerpt: The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits) is usually thought of as a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll in 1874, when he was already 42 years old and after the death of his godson had shattered his religious beliefs thoroughly. It actually is a fantastical epic tale recounting the adventures of a bizarre troupe of nine tradesmen and a beaver on their search for the Snark, a mysterious creature living in the seas. The series "Large Print Reader's Choice" features classic books with a font size of at least 16 points. This font size is not only highly recommended and useful for visually impaired readers, but generally improves letter and word recognition and reading comprehension. Large print books make your reading experience a more satisfying one.

Book excerpt: The Bellman, who was almost morbidly sensitive about appearances, used to have the bowsprit unshipped once or twice a week to be revarnished, and it more than once happened, when the time came for replacing it, that no one on board could remember which end of the ship it belonged to. They knew it was not of the slightest use to appeal to the Bellman about it-he would only refer to his Naval Code, and read out in pathetic tones Admiralty Instructions which none of them had ever been able to understand-so it generally ended in its being fastened on, anyhow, across the rudder. The helmsman used to stand by with tears in his eyes; he knew it was all wrong, but alas! Rule 42 of the Code, "No one shall speak to the Man at the Helm," had been completed by the Bellman himself with the words "and the Man at the Helm shall speak to no one." So remonstrance was impossible, and no steering could be done till the next varnishing day. During these bewildering intervals the ship usually sailed backwards. As this poem is to some extent connected with the lay of the Jabberwock, let me take this opportunity of answering a question that has often been asked me, how to pronounce "slithy toves." The "i" in "slithy" is long, as in "writhe"; and "toves" is pronounced so as to rhyme with "groves." Again, the first "o" in "borogoves" is pronounced like the "o" in "borrow." I have heard people try to give it the sound of the "o" in "worry". Such is Human Perversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Published on April Fool's Day, 1876, Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark remains one of the most amusing and bizarre works of modern verse. Carroll, who completed this classic poem eleven years after the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, invites readers along on a fictitious hunt to determine who - or what - the Snark actually is." "Now, over 130 years later, Martin Gardner, the extraordinary "philosophical scrivener," returns to the Snark with a trove of new annotations and illustrations, offering readers fresh insights into Carroll's existential play of fancy and philosophy." "Henry Holiday's original drawings enhance the work, as does a new introduction by Adam Gopnik that communicates the relevance this strange and in many ways ominous poem holds for a new generation of readers."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Snarkmaster

  • Author : Byron W. Sewell
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2012-06
  • ISBN : 9781782010029
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book Snarkmaster written by Byron W. Sewell and published by . This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the author (with many previous unique Snarkian works under his belt) describes "Snarkmaster" as the final work in a trilogy, it stands alone quite distinctly as a unique, gripping tale of a power struggle between good and evil, concluding with the development of an unusual intermediate state. Most of the story takes place prior to the traditional Snark voyage (described in verse in Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark"), but becomes inextricably linked with it-unless it isn't... The literary structure of "Snarkmaster" reveals some influence of Carroll's "Sylvie and Bruno" tales, as the characters (including the great Charles Dodgson himself) experience dream states and the appearance of at least one fairy. The comprehensive glossary and painstakingly hand-detailed maps of each of the islands in the archipelago may not be essential to follow the story, but they certainly enhance it. The meticulously hand-inked illustrations emphasize some of the important aspects of the story and provide a tropical ambiance for the text. While not necessarily a prerequisite, knowledge of Carroll's original poem is likely to make Snarkmaster more enjoyable for most readers.
