Book Oz The Hundredth Anniversary Celebration

Download or read book Oz The Hundredth Anniversary Celebration written by Peter Glassman and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2000-10-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can it really be one hundred years ago that a little girl from Kansas rode a tornado to a wondrous land called Oz? The adventures of Dorothy and her friends have enthralled generations of readers over the last century. Now, in Oz: The Hundredth Anniversary Celebration, thirty beloved children's book authors and artists pay tribute to the enchanted land that has done so much to nourish our imaginations, to make us laugh, and to inspire us. In words and images, these great storytellers and illustrators pay homage to an American classic. From a joyous vision of skipping down the Yellow Brick Road alongside Toto...to moving memories of turning to Oz as a source of comfort during wartime...to warm tales of parents and children shoring the pleasure of discovering a magical world together, these reflections celebrate all that is most special about Oz. Oz has proved to be an image of hope in the most difficult of circumstances, and the vivid words of L. Frank Baum have entranced even the most reluctant of young readers. Appropriately then, in addition to offering tributes to Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Cowardly Lion, and their friends, Oz: The Hundredth Anniversary Celebration honors reading itself Proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), which brings diverse literacy activities and free, new books to three and a half million children every year.

Book The Wizard of Oz

Download or read book The Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2000-06-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate the 100th birthday of a beloved American classic. From the moment it appeared in 1900, The Wizard of Oz sparked the imaginations of children and adults alike. The inhabitants of Oz have become an important part of American literary history. When Dorothy and her little dog Toto are suddenly swept from the plains of Kansas to the land of Oz, they meet up with some of the most endearing characters ever created, as well as one of the worst villains in children's literature. Together, Dorothy and her friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion set off on a fantastic journey down the yellow brick road in search of the wonderful Wizard. To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the publication of this classic American tale, Michael Hague re-illustrated the jacket, which, along with the book's cover, has been newly designed. The cover is now a three-piece case with gold foil stamps of Oz and the artist's signature on the front. Spot illustrations have been added to the redesigned front and back matter and a photograph of L. Frank Baum is now included, making this a lavish edition just right for gift givers or collectors.

Download or read book Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Madame Marie Sklodowska Curie s Nobel Prize in Chemistry written by M. -H. Chiu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a companion to the IYC-2011 celebration. The eleven chapters are organized into three sections: Section 1: Marie Curie’s Impact on Science and Society, Section 2: Women Chemists in the Past Two Centuries, and Section 3: Policy Implications. The authors invited to contribute to this book were asked to orient their chapter around a particular aspect of Marie Curie’s life such as the ethical aspects of her research, women’s role in research or her influence on the image of chemists. Our hope is that this book will positively influence young women’s minds and decisions they make in learning of chemistry/science like Marie Curie’s biography. But we do hope this book opens an avenue for young women to explore the possibility of being a scientist, or at least to appreciate chemistry as a human enterprise that has its merit in contributing to sustainability in our world. Also we hope that both men and women will realize that women are fully competent and capable of conducting creative and fascinating scientific research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of a coterie of dynamic women - not the brainchild of Reform Judaism's male leaders, as is often thought - Women of Reform Judaism has been a force in the shaping of American Jewish life since its founding as the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods in 1913. The synergy of Reform Judaism's universalist ideas and the women's emancipation movement in the early twentieth century made the synagogue auxiliary a natural platform for women to assume new leadership roles in their synagogues, in Reform Judaism, and in American society. These "sisterhoods" have stood for the solidarity among synagogue women as well as the commitment of these women to important social action issues. Called Women of Reform Judaism since 1993, this oldest federation of women's synagogue auxiliaries has grown from 52 temple sisterhoods to 500 and a membership of over 65,000 women, today a vibrant international women's organization. Women of Reform Judaism, in cooperation with The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and Hebrew Union College Press, marks its centennial anniversary with this collection of new scholarly essays which looks back at its history in order to understand how the hopes and dreams of its founders have come to fruition. Armed with the rich archival resources of the American Jewish Archives, including Proceedings of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, 1913-1955, eighteen scholars contributed essays on the spectrum of Women of Reform Judaism's activities, including their funding of Hebrew Union College during the Great Depression, their support for Jewish education through production of a substantial women's Torah commentary designed to edify lay people as well as scholars and clergy, their promotion of Jewish foodways and art through publication of cookbooks and support of synagogue gift shops, their invention of the Uniongram as a formidable fundraising tool on a par with the Girl Scout cookie, and their efforts to safeguard Jewish continuity through support of youth activities (NFTY).
