Book Essays on Fielding Miscellanies

Download or read book Essays on Fielding Miscellanies written by Henry Knight Miller and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fielding's Miscellanies, three volumes of poetry, essays, and satires, have never been studied in detail. Uneven in quality, often highly personal, they offer important insights into the concerns and growth of the English novelist. Mr. Miller has provided a reference guide to the First volume of the three, analyzing the writings and the intellectual traditions in which Fielding worked. Included in Volume One are poetry, formal essays, a translation from the Greek, and several satirical sketches and Lucianic dialogues. Here is Fielding experimenting with literary styles; adumbrated here are many of the themes and methods of the later novels, Tom Jones and Amelia in particular. In recording Fielding's intense moral concerns, his comic genius, and his ironic, incisive portraits of man and society, Volume One of the Miscellanies is a microcosm of his intellectual world. Originally published in 1961. Book Laughter from Realism to Modernism

Download or read book Laughter from Realism to Modernism written by Alberto Godioli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As best exemplified by the works of Pirandello, Svevo, Palazzeschi, and Gadda, Italian modernist fiction is particularly rich in bizarre and ludicrous characters, whose originality is often derided by a uniform society. On the other hand, laughter can also be used by the author (or by the misfits themselves) as a reaction to the levelling pressure of social life - Pirandello's umorismo, Svevo's irony, Palazzeschi's controdolore, and Gadda's satire are all good cases in point. Looked at from this perspective, early 20th-century Italian fiction can set the basis for an innovative reflection on broader comparative themes. What is the role of laughter and individual diversity in international Modernism? How is modernist eccentricity related to the representations of originality in the 18th and 19th centuries, from Sterne to Balzac and Dostoevsky? And what does it tell us about the fear of homogenisation as a crucial aspect of the modern social imaginary? Building on the analysis of a large corpus of short stories and other major works by the Italian authors at issue, as well as on a series of previously undetected intertextual links with the classics of European Realism, this book is the first systematic attempt at answering such questions. Alberto Godioli is Teaching Fellow in Italian at the University of Edinburgh."

Book Melancholy and the Care of the Soul

Download or read book Melancholy and the Care of the Soul written by Jeremy Schmidt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melancholy is rightly taken to be a central topic of concern in early modern culture, and it continues to generate scholarly interest among historians of medicine, literature, psychiatry and religion. This book considerably furthers our understanding of the issue by examining the extensive discussions of melancholy in seventeenth- and eighteenth- century religious and moral philosophical publications, many of which have received only scant attention from modern scholars. Arguing that melancholy was considered by many to be as much a 'disease of the soul' as a condition originating in bodily disorder, Dr. Schmidt reveals how insights and techniques developed in the context of ancient philosophical and early Christian discussions of the good of the soul were applied by a variety of early modern authorities to the treatment of melancholy. The book also explores ways in which various diagnostic and therapeutic languages shaped the experience and expression of melancholy and situates the melancholic experience in a series of broader discourses, including the language of religious despair dominating English Calvinism, the late Renaissance concern with the government of the passions, and eighteenth-century debates surrounding politeness and material consumption. In addition, it explores how the shifting languages of early modern melancholy altered and enabled certain perceptions of gender. As a study in intellectual history, Melancholy and the Care of the Soul offers new insights into a wide variety of early modern texts, including literary representations and medical works, and critically engages with a broad range of current scholarship in addressing some of the central interpretive issues in the history of early modern medicine, psychiatry, religion and culture.

Book Probability and Literary Form

Download or read book Probability and Literary Form written by Douglas Lane Patey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-04-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly original and penetrating study explores fundamental intellectual predispositions and concepts which underpin the literature and thought of the Augustan period in England. By examining in particular Augustan notions of probability and the way they provided a framework for thinking about and organising experience, Dr Patey reconstructs a characteristically eighteenth-century theory of literature which offers a much more satisfactory account of the work of Pope, Johnson, Fielding and others than the Romantic literary categories already in existence. The scope of this study is encyclopaedic and it will be an essential reference work for all scholars of eighteenth-century English literature and intellectual history, as well as historians of ideas.

Book The Culture of Equity in Restoration and Eighteenth Century Britain and America

Download or read book The Culture of Equity in Restoration and Eighteenth Century Britain and America written by Mark Fortier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on politics, religion, law, literature, and philosophy, this interdisciplinary study is a sequel to Mark Fortier’s bookThe Culture of Equity in Early Modern England (Ashgate, 2006). The earlier volume traced the meanings and usage of equity in broad cultural terms (including but not limited to law) to position equity as a keyword of valuation, persuasion, and understanding; the present volume carries that work through the Restoration and eighteenth century in Britain and America. Fortier argues that equity continued to be a keyword, used and contested in many of the major social and political events of the period. Further, he argues that equity needs to be seen in this period largely outside the Aristotelian parameters that have generally been assumed in scholarship on equity.
