Book Philosophy and National Development in Nigeria

Download or read book Philosophy and National Development in Nigeria written by Adeshina Afolayan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it imply for Nigerian philosophers to conscientiously and engagingly reflect on Nigeria as a place of philosophy and as a dynamic plural context of socioeconomic, political, cultural and ethnic problems? Any answer to this question automatically constitutes the opening salvo to the reflection on the evolution of a Nigerian tradition of philosophy and philosophizing. This book represents such an initial salvo in in its attempt to hammer out the conditions for the possibility of a Nigerian tradition of philosophy by placing that endeavor in between the triadic challenges of the Nigerian political economy, the African philosophical theorizing and the global epistemological hegemony. How do these three dynamics condition the evolution and functional relevance of the philosophical enterprise in Nigeria? How have Nigerian philosophers responded to them? What is Nigerian philosophy? How can there be a "Nigerian" philosophy when there are no Nigerians? This book is also an attempt to contribute to the trajectory of philosophy education in Nigeria within the context of a postcolonial educational system and university dynamics that stultifies the role of the intellectuals in development. From Plato to Wiredu, from Bodunrin to Bourdieu, and from Heidegger and Nietzsche to Fanon, Mignolo and Santos, the book traces a trajectory of dynamics rethinking of existing paradigms and epistemological assumptions that could enable a robust evolution of a Nigerian tradition of philosophy that possesses sufficient clout to confront its historicity and its place in Nigeria’s development impasse.

Book Literature Literary Criticism and National Development

Download or read book Literature Literary Criticism and National Development written by Nnolim, Charles E. and published by Malthouse Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lectures in this book were delivered at significant points in Professor Nnolim’s career. ‘Literature and the Common Welfare’ (1988) was his inaugural lecture, his declaration that he had come of age as an academic, as a young Professor of literature. In August 2000, he delivered ‘Literature, the Arts and Cultural Development’ to announce his induction as a member of the Nigerian Academy of Letters in which he was finally admitted as a Fellow in 2005. In this lecture, Nnolim makes strong claims about the validity of literature in Nigeria’s national life. In August, 2007, Professor Nnolim delivered ‘The Writer’s Responsibility and Literature in National Development’. Here he re-emphasizes the importance of literary studies in Nigeria’s national life and goes on to lament the total neglect of Nigeria’s artists, writers, and world class intellectuals in national life. The fourth lecture, ‘Morning Yet on Criticism Day: the Criticism of African Literature in the Twentieth Century’, was given as a laureate of the Nigerian National Merit Award, 2009. It unifies Professor Nnolim’s various pleas for the role of literature in national development but particularly re-emphasizing the problem of language in Nigeria’s creative writing and urging governmental intervention in the matter.

Book Rethinking Security in Nigeria

Download or read book Rethinking Security in Nigeria written by Dapọ Adelugba and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Security in Nigeria adopts an alternate conceptual and methodological framework for rethinking national security in Nigeria by using the humanities' multidisciplinary perspective against the backdrop of the hitherto restrictive analysis of the nature of national security. By expounding the largely unexplored cosmological, conceptual, ethical and aesthetic dimensions as key contributors to national survival and social integration, the volume argues systematically for a basic redefinition of the meanings of security, the value of life, government action and social re-engineering in order to create a new system of social order an integration. The authors attempt to extend the boundaries of previous theorizing on security by identifying alternate ethical and aesthetic approaches to national reconciliation and human development in present-day Nigeria, which faces major security challenges requiring the clarification of the basis for developing a just and harmonious society. The study is a contribution to the quest for defining the vital socio-cultural norms and doctrinal imperatives needed for responsible cooperative human action. It examines the roles of dominant works of philosophy, literature, plays and performances in the creation of a basis for political stability and social reconciliation in the society. It extends the boundaries of previous aesthetic studies and redefines the roles of ethics and aesthetics as crucial contributors to security, human development and world civilisation.
