Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Side of Birds In the examination of some aspects and forms of life it is often best to cast aside the complex ma chinery of cold and calculating analysis, and to look only with the eye of love and sympathy. In this work it is my purpose to reject the limitations of unsympathetic research, and to endeavour to see beyond formal classifications, and to understand the spirit, emotions and impulses in the lives of our feathered friends of the air. By this means many new discoveries have been made which include a universal truth, where a too minute and laborious logic would have proved a hopeless labyrinth. The syllogistic method Sig nally fails to comprehend or appreciate the real spiritual beauty of the life of other species than our own. It ascribes no intelligence or spirituality even to birds, and brands their most efficient activities as instinctive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Human Side of Animals by Royal Dixon "And in the lion or the frog-In all the life of moor or fen-In ass and peacock, stork and dog, He read similitudes of men." More and more science is being taught in a new way. More and more men are beginning to discard the lumber of the brain's workshop to get at real facts, real conclusions. Laboratories, experiments, tables, classifications are all very vital and all very necessary but sometimes their net result is only to befog and confuse. Occasionally it becomes important for us to cast aside all dogmatic restraints and approach the wonders of life from a new angle and with the untrammelled spirit of a little child. In this book I have attempted to bring together many old and new observations which tend to show the human-like qualities of animals. The treatment is neither formal nor scholastic, in fact I do not always remain within the logical confines of the title. My sole purpose is to make the reader self-active, observative, free from hide-bound prejudice, and reborn as a participant in the wonderful experiences of life which fill the universe. I hope to lead him into a new wonderland of truth, beauty and love, a land where his heart as well as his eyes will be opened. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homing With the Bird: The History of a Lifetime of Personal Experience With the Birds IN the fall of 1916, while visiting at the home of Mr. F. N. Doubleday, a member of the house which publishes most Of my books, in conversation with my very dear friend Mrs. N eltje De Graft Double day, the author of a number of invaluable books on birds and flowers, She began to question me about unusual experiences I encountered afield. I told her some of the things here recorded, the queerest and most peculiar things that I had seen during a lifetime Of personal contact with the birds. In the course of that intimate conversation, Mrs. Doubleday conceived and planned this book, feel ing - I hope not mistakenly - that these intimate personal experiences with birds, which so in tensely interested her, would not fail to be of equal interest to other bird lovers and protectors. She felt that these records faithfully and simply set down would add very largely to the sum of human achievement in a scientific estimate of the habits and characteristics of birds.' So, I have written for any one who is interested, these sketches of personal experience, as I outlined them to such a. Book Stories of Our Western Birds Vol 9 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Our Western Birds Vol 9 Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Grinnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Our Western Birds, Vol. 9 IT is a matter of common notice that bird-life offers the most attractive outdoor object of interest to the average schoolboy. The almost human personality of birds, their varied form and color, their ceaseless activity, their evasiveness, - a11 conspire to arouse an intense curiosity. And why should we not en courage this curiosity? Ii properly directed, it is certainly a valuable and ready incentive, to be seized upon and harnessed into the process of education. The keenness and accuracy of observation cultivated by the overcoming of that very elusive ness so characteristic of birds, will remain long after the bird itself is forgotten. It is a significant fact that many of our greatest scientists and professional men admit their earliest active interest to have been in bird-study, to which stage in their mental development we may attribute a good part of that training so invaluable in their later more serious lines of work. In the following simple descriptives, my mother and I have tried to help arouse and direct interest in bird-study among school-children, as well as, possibly, older folks. It has been our aim to present a fair amount of information, but diluted with enough of the commonplace, so as not to balk the most timid spirit of inquiry. We want the reader to finish each. Book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint written by Margaret Coulson Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings Since permanent interest in any subject cannot be awakened through occasional lessons, it is believed that much profit will come from a few weeks' continuous read ing along a single line, - reading which will create a love for the beautiful through understanding. Ignorance closes the door to much of our best' literature, which can be interpreted only through a sympathetic familiarity with nature. Color, sound, and movement are always attractive to childhood, and nowhere can they be found in such pleas ing combination as in the bird world. The study of its busy little inhabitants in their natural environment will not only add pleasure to the walks of the child, but will help him to a knowledge of the adaptation of all life to its surroundings. It will also lead to the intelligent appreciation of litera ture and music. Since the birth of time the birds have inspired poets and musicians. They have also given the keenest pleas ure to countless thousands who have never attempted to express what they felt. To interest a child in these guests of our groves, - these feathered entertainers who are also workers in our fields and orchards, - is to put him in possession of a wellspring of interest as enduring as life itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bird Hospital The study of birds (and a most de lightful study too) is steadily on the in crease, and a great deal of good is being done. A great deal more might be done if older people would take more pains in impressing upon all children never to harm in any way our feathered friends. I have prepared this little book of sim ple true tales, not for the literary critic to pull to pieces, but simply to give pleas ure to all lovers of pets, hoping it may be of some help to those who Wish to tame and train their birds or cats. I especially want it to teach children to love and be kind to all living creatures God has put upon the earth. He has never put anything here that has notsome use, no matter how some may fear and hate the lower animals. Never hurt anything, and only kill when it is necessary, and then do it in the quickest and most humane way. I shall be glad to hear from any chil dren Who have pets, and will aid them all I can in taming and training them. Book Bird Notes Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bird Notes Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by W. Geo; Creswell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Notes, Vol. 4 The entire plumage of this bird is a shining black with a dull blue gloss over it, the legs and beak a lovely coral red; total length about 15 inches, wing 103/4 inches, tail 51/2 inches. The sexes are alike in colouring, the female being slightly the smaller of the two. The young birds attain their full plumage at the end of the second year: before this their beaks are of a dull yellow colour. It builds in most inaccessible places, seeking out the steepest parts of the cliffs, and the nest is often at the end of a cleft with several turnings, and is composed of sticks, roots, and dry grass, lined with wool and grass. The eggs are four or five in number, of a yellowish white spotted with ash grey, purple, or light brown. Size about 11/4 ins. by 1 ins. The Chough feeds on insects and grain of various sorts, berries, and some kind of small shell-fish which it picks up on the shore. That it is getting scarce is sadly true: this fact has been observed in the West of Ireland, the South of England, and Scotland. There are many reasons given for its diminishing numbers: "Some say it is the Jackdaws, And others they say Nay, Its just the man who's got a gun And likes to blaze away." I am glad to see these birds are included in the Wild Birds Protection Act 1880. This bird appears in the Schedule which applies to every County in England, Scotland, and Ireland. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds Without Wings traces the fortunes of one small community in southwest Turkey (Anatolia) in the early part of the last century—a quirky community in which Christian and Muslim lives and traditions have co-existed peacefully over the centuries and where friendship, even love, has transcended religious differences. But with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the onset of the Great War, the sweep of history has a cataclysmic effect on this peaceful place: The great love of Philothei, a Christian girl of legendary beauty, and Ibrahim, a Muslim shepherd who courts her from near infancy, culminates in tragedy and madness; Two inseparable childhood friends who grow up playing in the hills above the town suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of the bloody struggle; and Rustem Bey, a wealthy landlord, who has an enchanting mistress who is not what she seems. Far away from these small lives, a man of destiny who will come to be known as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is emerging to create a country from the ruins of an empire. Victory at Gallipoli fails to save the Ottomans from ultimate defeat and, as a new conflict arises, Muslims and Christians struggle to survive, let alone understand, their part in the great tragedy that will reshape the whole region forever.
