Book Studies in the Lives of the Saints Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Lives of the Saints Classic Reprint written by Edward Hutton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Lives of the Saints Action of the mind on itself has ever been the tendency of the scientific inquirer. If such attempts have any real value, it is in the evidence they bring forward of our profound ignorance of the most simple phenomena of the interior and unseen life - that child sleep ing so peacefully in most of us, only occasion ally stirring in the dreams that we learn in time to disregard. And unlike the aesthetic critic it is impossible for us to ignore the reality of these experiences of the Saints. For they have no intrinsic beauty, being really but a kind of profound logic following on that postulate Let it be granted that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. In the ex periences of St. Teresa or St. John of the Cross there is nothing that is of any pos sible value if the actual experiences told so coldly never really happened. And indeed, when we inquire more closely into the scienceof mysticism, we find scarcely beauty at all, only a kind of tragedy whose end we cannot see - a tragedy that is really after all only a comedy, so that it should end happily. And mysticism, regarded rightly not as the hysteri cal profession of those who in contemplating some bleeding Christ have lost that temper ance and sanity which it is the profound busi ness of criticism to preserve, but regarded as the hard and crystallized logic of some mighty argument, is really not a beautiful thing at all, in that almost its first requirement is a denial of life, a dislike and contempt for the beauty of the world. Entirely without humour, it has at least to this extent in uenced every school of Christian thought in that Christianity gener ally denies humour to God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thb Psychology of the Saints We may ask: Are all these different psychologies utterly distinct one from the other? Is instinct an occult possession and crime a phenomenon standing quite by itself, a thing apart, the offspring of a devia tion or spontaneous retrogression of the human race Is the great man a mysterious gift of the Unconscious or the sudden incarnation of a spirit which sets at defiance all attempts at analysis? Is the saint a being in whom a miraculous agency has completely ousted and supplanted nature - I have, in turn, en deavoured to combat every one of these notions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virgil Thomson and Gertrude SteinFour Saints in Three ActsEdited by H. Wiley Hitchcock MU18 / A 64 ISBN (2008) lv + 447 pp. $250.00 ISBN 978-0-89579-629-5 Rental parts available from Schirmer only. With music by Virgil Thomson and a libretto by Gertrude Stein, Four Saints in Three Acts was completed in 1928 but waited almost six years for its first performances. After a week¿s run in Hartford, Connecticut, in February 1934, it moved to New York where--with some sixty performances in six weeks--it became the longest-running opera that Broadway up to that time had experienced. This critical edition by H. Wiley Hitchcock and Charles Fussell features the scenario by Maurice Grosser and is based on the full score that Thomson commissioned from copyist Ben Weber for his 1947-48 revision; it includes the 32-measure orchestral prelude to the Act II "Dance of the Angels," and it makes comparisons primarily to the manuscript scores held at the Library of Congress and Yale University. The critical apparatus applies as much to the music as to the Stein text, the principal source for which is the 1929 first publication.

Book Saints of Islam Classic Reprint

Download or read book Saints of Islam Classic Reprint written by Husain R. Sayani and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saints of Islam As the interesting events of the lives of great persons great in their moral character and greatness of mind, whether they be of the Christian faith or of any other, are gene rally found to be interesting and instructive, as such lives contain those strange realities of human life which appeal to the human mind and are instructive to the understanding of human nature; and as there has been of late a keen and growing interest in the literature of the East among the Christian public I have ventured to lay before them the lives of these Muslim saints. Perhaps the title of this book would suggest to some minds the narration of miraculous deeds, of mighty dragons blown out of life by the mere blow of a breath and wild beasts charmed into obedience by simple words of command; or it might suggest perhaps the discussion of subtle metaphysical questions and a vain endeavour to solve the dark mysteries of human life; but instead of finding these if the reader finds in these lives some lessons of true philosophy; if he realizes the truth of these lines. Book The Varieties of Religious Experience

Download or read book The Varieties of Religious Experience written by William James and published by The Floating Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature explores the nature of religion and, in James' observation, its divorce from science when studied academically. After publication in 1902 it quickly became a canonical text of philosophy and psychology, remaining in print through the entire century. "Scientific theories are organically conditioned just as much as religious emotions are; and if we only knew the facts intimately enough, we should doubtless see 'the liver' determining the dicta of the sturdy atheist as decisively as it does those of the Methodist under conviction anxious about his soul. When it alters in one way the blood that percolates it, we get the Methodist, when in another way, we get the atheist form of mind."

Download or read book The Science of the Saints Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by R. J. Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of the Saints, Vol. 1 The following pages form the first part of a little work whose purpose, as sketched in the Introduction, is expressed by the general title, "First Lessons in the Science of the Saints." The subjects which are treated in the present volume, as well as those which, God willing and necessary occupations permitting, are to be treated in subsequent volumes, have often furnished appropriate matter for spiritual conferences, instructions and considerations during the Annual Retreats, made by priests, religious, seminarians, sodalists and others who desired to lay a solid foundation of Christian virtue. They have, therefore, as is natural, a special connection with the Exercises of the Retreat; but the principles, embodied in them, bear upon all the actions of our lives.
