Book Human Populations

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony J. Boyce
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Human Populations written by Anthony J. Boyce and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human populations--groups of people living together and sharing a number of biological and social characteristics--differ from one another in many important respects. Human Evolution: Diversity and Adaptation provides a succinct and insightful exploration of the many genetic and environmental conditions that have led to such differences. In describing the specific kinds of diversity--genetic, morphological, social, and disease associations--the book presents case studies that clearly show how such differences interact to produce the variety of human populations that exist around the world. It also stresses the point that human history is to some extent the history of migration, resulting in populations that are not discrete entities but rather a continuous gradation of various physical and cultural attributes. Splendidly written by leading experts, Human Evolution is an excellent compendium that explores the multifaceted field of human evolution.

Book Social Information Transmission and Human Biology

Download or read book Social Information Transmission and Human Biology written by Jonathan CK Wells and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-05-22 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has emphasized that socially transmitted information may affect both the gene pool and the phenotypes of individuals and populations, and that an improved understanding of evolutionary issues is beneficial to those working towards the improvement of human health. In response to a growing interest across disciplines for information regarding the contribution of social behavior to a range of biological outcomes, Social Information Transmission and Human Biology connects the work of evolutionary theorists and those dealing with practical issues in human health and demographics. Combining evolutionary models with biomedical research, authors from various disciplines look at how human behavior influences health, and how reproductive fitness sheds light on the processes that shaped the evolution of human behavior. Both academic and medical researchers will find much useful insight in this text.

Book Building Resilience of Human Natural Systems of Pastoralism in the Developing World

Download or read book Building Resilience of Human Natural Systems of Pastoralism in the Developing World written by Shikui Dong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume summarizes information about the situational context, threats, problems, challenges and solutions for sustainable pastoralism at a global scale. The book has four goals. The first goal is to summarize the information about the history, distribution and patterns of pastoralism and to identify the importance of pastoralism from social, economic and environmental perspectives. The results of an empirical investigation of the environmental and socio-economic implications of pastoralism in representative pastoral regions in the world are also incorporated. The second goal is to argue that breaking coupled human-natural systems of pastoralism leads to degradation of pastoral ecosystems and to create an analysis framework to assess the vulnerability of worldwide pastoralism. Our analysis framework provides approaches to help comprehensively understand the transitions and the impacts of human-natural systems in the pastoral regions in the world. The third goal is to identify the successful models in promoting coupled human-natural systems of pastoralism, and to learn lessons of breaking coupled human-cultural pastoralism systems through examining the representative cases in regions including Central Asia, Southern and Eastern Asia, Northern and Eastern Africa, the European Alps and South America. The fourth goal is to identify the strategies to build the resilience of the coupled human-natural systems of pastoralism worldwide. We hope that our book can facilitate the further examination of sustainable development of coupled human-natural systems of pastoralism by providing the summaries of existing data and information related to the pastoralism development, and by offering a framework for better understanding and analysis of their social, economic and environmental implications.

  • Publisher : University Press of Colorado
  • Release : 2015-04-15

Download or read book The Ecology of Pastoralism written by P. Nick Kardulias and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Ecology of Pastoralism, diverse contributions from archaeologists and ethnographers address pastoralism’s significant impact on humanity’s basic subsistence and survival, focusing on the network of social, political, and religious institutions existing within various societies dependent on animal husbandry. Pastoral peoples, both past and present, have organized their relationships with certain animals to maximize their ability to survive and adapt to a wide range of conditions over time. Contributors show that despite differences in landscape, environment, and administrative and political structures, these societies share a major characteristic—high flexibility. Based partially on the adaptability of various domestic animals to difficult environments and partially on the ability of people to establish networks allowing them to accommodate political, social, and economic needs, this flexibility is key to the survival of complex pastoral systems and serves as the connection among the varied cultures in the volume. In The Ecology of Pastoralism, a variety of case studies from a broad geographic sampling uses archaeological and contemporary data and offers a new perspective on the study of pastoralism, making this volume a valuable contribution to current research in the area.

Book Human Biodiversity

Download or read book Human Biodiversity written by Jonathan Marks and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Are humans unique? This simple question, at the very heart of the hybrid field of biological anthropology, poses one of the false of dichotomies—with a stereotypical humanist answering in the affirmative and a stereotypical scientist answering in the negative. The study of human biology is different from the study of the biology of other species. In the simplest terms, people's lives and welfare may depend upon it, in a sense that they may not depend on the study of other scientific subjects. Where science is used to validate ideas—four out of five scientists preferring a brand of cigarettes or toothpaste—there is a tendency to accept the judgment as authoritative without asking the kinds of questions we might ask of other citizens' pronouncements. In Human Biodiversity, Marks has attempted to distill from a centuries-long debate what has been learned and remains to be learned about the biological differences within and among human groups. His is the first such attempt by an anthropologist in years, for genetics has undermined the fundamental assumptions of racial taxonomy. The history of those assumptions from Linnaeus to the recent past—the history of other, more useful assumptions that derive from Buffon and have reemerged to account for genetic variation—are the poles of Marks's exploration."--Provided by publisher.
