Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hub and the Spokes Or, the Capital and Its Environs Introductory words to books have long followed a set rule. In publishing The Hub and The Spokes, that rule will be broken possibly for the first time. In casting about for writers of this Introduction, the men who have so kindly responded and furnished that which follows, need, themselves, no introduction, since each in his line is too well known to require it. It is most heart pleasing to feel that such men should consent to write, and write so generously of an author, whose one great aim is to bring into more kindly relationship the two great peoples of the Ameri can Continent. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Its twenty-three contributions, written by prominent composers and writers representing many different regions and both national languages, present a cross-section of current work in historical research, bibliography, analysis, criticism, and creative composition. Among the subjects covered are bibliographical and historian research on recent musical findings from New France and on early musical activities in various Canadian cities and regions; critical appraisals of Canadian composers and performers; and surveys of Canadian musical organizations and their programs. Four short compositions have been written especially for the volume. The title is drawn from two early Canadian musical periodicals, the English-language Musical Canada and the French-language Le Canada musical. As those journals did for their time, so this volume provides a contemporary overview of Canadian music and music scholarship.

  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Railway Security written by Richard R. Young and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview and assessment of the security risks, both manmade and natural, facing the railways and rail networks. Railroads face significant threats from disasters, but with situational awareness and coordinated effort these can often be substantially minimized. Transportation assets have always been vulnerable to natural disasters, but in the current environment these assets are also a preferred target of human-caused disruption, especially in the form of terrorism, as the events in many other parts of the world have underscored. Railways are not a homogeneous mode of transportation given their various roles in intercity and commuter passenger movement, as well as being a major portion of the freight ton-miles upon which the U.S. economy is highly dependent. Designed to provide advice for railway owners and first responders, this text discusses how to secure hazardous material transport and how to establish guidelines for rail freight operations and rail passenger operations. The book aims to develop an understanding of the unique operating characteristics of railways, the nature and the range of vulnerabilities, the present means for protecting the infrastructure, and the public policy initiatives that are prerequisite for developing a comprehensive appreciation of the magnitude of this issue. The book utilizes case studies of transport disasters to illustrate lessons learned and to provide critical insight into preventative measures. This book will be of great interest to students and practitioners of transportation, technology and engineering, and security management.

Book Shapes of Tourism Employment

Download or read book Shapes of Tourism Employment written by Gwenaelle Grefe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ambition of this book is to propose a grid of reading able to illuminate the current HR transformations experienced by the big historical international companies of the sector of the tourism, carried away by what is known as the "3rd tourist revolution ". The latter is characterized by the combination of three main phenomena: internationalization, digitalization and hyper-personalization that refound the employment relationship between employers, unions and employees. Internationalization requires a renewal of business models heckled by the low-cost strategies of new operators provoking social reactions to the extent of perceived psychological disruptions, to question the validity of these same strategies. Digitization has opened the way to the disintermediation at the origin of the evolution of the trades front and back office. Finally, hyper-personalization and adaptation to new client behaviors justify the hegemony of soft skills for a redefined hospitality. In the end, the employee must constantly deal with often paradoxical injunctions (example: standardization of service protocols versus empowerment). A focus will be made on two specific branches: hotels and air transport which will each be part of a part. The topic will be illustrated by case studies and testimonials. The two coordinators of the book will draw on the contributions of researchers who collaborate with them in the framework of an international research program they pilot.
